This is Hardwick Hall, a beautiful @nationaltrust property in Derbyshire, U.K. We visited this Elizabethan stately home last week as part of Pipers history classes focussing on Queen Elizabeth I as she was close to the owner, Bess of Hardwick. Piper researched and wrote a report on the place before our visit and loved spotting all the things she discovered such as the 6 ‘E.S’ initials opulently perched on top of the towers or the many windows considered such a luxury at the time. We also followed one of the many trails around the grounds for a few hours, had lunch from the takeout cafe and used the brilliantly organised and spotlessly clean toilets. This really is my kind of homeschooling! . The house has appeared in the Harry Potter movies and Mary Queen of Scots so you may recognise it as you walk up. . . . A huge thank you and well done to the National Trust for making us feel completely safe during our whole visit. We can’t wait to return and see inside the house when the indoors reopen. Hands up if you’ve already switched the central heating back on. 🔥 In an age when most houses didn’t have plumbing, Lord Armstrong was harnessing the power of nature to pack Cragside with the type of home comforts we enjoy today. As the first home to be powered by hydro-electricity, Cragside enjoyed hot and cold running water and a state-of-the-art central heating system to warm the house on crisp autumnal evenings. There was even the added luxury of the Turkish baths. ➡️ Continuiamo a scoprire i Luoghi del Cuore nelle Marche insieme ai gruppi FAI giovani delle Marche: questa settimana vi presentiamo il Luogo del Cuore proposto dal nostro gruppo FAI giovani, ROCCA MONTE VARMINE di Carassai. 👉 A 4 km dal paese di Carassai si erge imponente il castello di Monte Varmine: splendido esempio di rocca medioevale, è giunta ben conservata fino ai giorni nostri con le sue mura poderose e l’alta torre dai merli ghibellini (35 m), munita di arciere e piombatoi. Dall’alto mastio della rocca si può ammirare e contemplare il paesaggio multiforme e dolcissimo delle colline della Valdaso e della Valmenocchia. La prima fortificazione sarebbe stata costruita dai longobardi che, nel VI-VII secolo, si insediarono nei pressi del colle di Monte Varmine in un luogo dove era facile controllare larea circostante. Nel 1060 viene donata al vescovo di Fermo. Nei secoli successivi varie nobili famiglie e personaggi fermani ne entrano in possesso, finché nel 1417 viene donata alla confraternita dell’ospedale di Santa Maria della Carità di Fermo. Trasformata in fattoria, è oggi uno dei rari esempi di fattoria fortificata nel Piceno. Nel suo cortile interno si trova la chiesa settecentesca di San Pietro. Pur trovandosi nel territorio di Carassai, Rocca Monte Varmine è proprietà del comune di Fermo, che l’ha ereditata qualche decennio fa dall’Opera Pia Brefotrofio, insieme ai suoi 700 ettari di terreno, destinati nei secoli allagricoltura e al sostentamento dei neonati abbandonati e indigenti. Purtroppo non è attualmente visitabile date le sue precarie condizioni dovute, oltre che a una lunga incuria e mancanza di manutenzione, anche agli effetti del sisma del 1997 e del 2016. WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU this magical place, the Palace of Venaria. It is a former royal residence and gardens located in Venaria Reale, near Turin in Piedmont region in northern Italy. With 80,000m² in palace area and over 950.000m² in premises, it is one the largest palaces in the world. Other than being a venue with such a large capacity it is also a true gem for people who love art and culture. On the first photo you can see one of the palace rooms and we are just so in love with it! Just imagine, all around this long room are scattered beautifully set tables with tall red orchid compositions in glass vases, the whole hall is illuminated by candle light, which creates reflections and the whole reception rooms seems to be glistening. In 1906, Oakes Ames and his wife Blanche purchased land on the border of Sharon and Easton. The country estate they named Borderland remained in the family for 65 years. In 1971, two years after the death of Blanche Ames, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts acquired the estate and opened it as a state park. The familys home, a three-storey stone mansion built in 1910, still stands. Its twenty rooms are furnished much as they were when the Ameses lived here; many of Blanche Ames  paintings grace the walls. Their illustrious histories remain in the house which is open for scheduled tours The 1,570 acre park is ideal for  recreational activities like walking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing and in the winter sledding, ice skating and cross country skiing. Bibury is situated in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds on the River Coln 9 miles from the market town of Burford. The village was once described by William Morris as the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds. The village centre clusters around a square near St. Marys, a Saxon church. Some of the Saxon remains inside the church are replicas as the originals are housed in the British Museum. One of the villages main tourist spots and overlooking a water meadow and the river is Arlington Row, a group of ancient cottages with steeply pitched roofs dating back to the 16th Century. Henry Ford thought Arlington Row was an icon of England. On a trip to the Cotswolds he tried to buy the entire row of houses to ship back to Michigan so that he could include them in Greenfield Village. Happy Thursday. We’re not going for the traditional Thatched property today, although all your thatched captures are truly wonderful. Instead we’ve opted for this beautiful home captured by @alexrwilliams1. It has so much about it. When you look closely, you can see what looks like a very old archway and gate to the right, a lovely little wooden garden gate to the left and those two rooftop windows are just divine. And that’s before you even look at the historic porch, slightly wonkey but characterful stone wall and it’s two classic chimneys. This property really does have so much about it. Celebrating @classicist_org, here is our #icaaeverywhere post of the Sir Christopher Wren building reposting from @william_and_mary. We cant wait to visit this fall when our senior @char_flower has her long awaited graduation ceremony originally scheduled for this spring. Being in lockdown, there is lots of time to consider critical milestones like graduation and how paramount a strong sense of place is. The Sir Christopher Wren Building is the oldest college building still standing in the United States. It was constructed between 1695 and 1700 and was the first building to be restored by John D. Rockefellar as part of a comprehensive restoration of Colonial Williamsburg in the late 1920s. With its signature red brick, Georgian features and classical inspired ornament, The Wren building is at the historic core of the university, setting a strong, unifying style for the rest of campus.For more than three centuries, it has been the soul of the College where generations of William & Mary students have attended classes, lectures and services. It is the first building you see on a college tour. It is the building freshmen enter the campus during Convocation. It is the backdrop for the annual yule log ceremony and campus wide caroling. It is the anchor for student picnics and recreational games in the sunken gardens. It is the backdrop for the senior “King and Queen” ball and the candlelight ceremony before graduation. It is the place where college seniors ring the bell on their last day of classes. It is the place where four years after they emerged from the building to the cheers of their classmates, the graduates return in the opposite direction, passing back through the portico dressed in their full graduation regalia to attend Commencement ceremonies and enter the “real” world. Immersed in this setting, there is no more beautiful college campus than William and Mary and the historic Wren building is our timely example of #icaaeverywhere. Forse non tutti sanno che… in una frazione di Reggello, a una manciata di km da Firenze, si trova la villa-castello di Sammezzano, il più importante esempio di arte orientalista in Europa! Tenuta di caccia all’epoca dei Medici, nel 1605 la proprietà venne acquistata dagli Ximenes D’Aragona che ne mantennero l’aspetto sino alla metà dell’800 quando un discendente, Ferdinando, diede al castello la veste attuale. 365 stanze che richiamano i capolavori dell’Alahambra di Granada ed il Taj Mahal in India e un giardino con oltre 100 specie arboree esotiche! St Peter, Walpole St Peter (1/2) ‘Queen of the Marshlands’, and such a well deserved title. This is a massive church (as so many rural Norfolk churches are!) whose chancel extends to the very edge of the churchyard. This chancel was built in the 1420s and features a passageway which passes beneath it, allowing processions to circle the church and remain on consecrated ground. It has a vaulted roof enhanced by bosses, and is where parishioners left their horses during service. However, the star of this church is the porch, completed about 30 years after the chancel. Canopied niches sit either side of a superb three-light Tudor window, and these niches are supported by lions on one side and griffins (though Mortlock and Roberts call them eagles) on the other side. Between the griffins are St Peter’s keys. Above the doorway are the arms of the donors, and either side are two-stage buttresses with niches of their own. The ceiling is superb, featuring a number of fantastic bosses; pictured here is the Assumption, angels holding the canopy which surrounds the Virgin. Below this a muzzled pig. Another features the Last Judgement. Further niches in the corners contain battered figures. The second stage of the porch was a school for local children until 1812. Kokotova Kula 🏛️ Nekadašnje raskošno imanje sa baroknom palatom i velikim brojem pripadajućih objekata samo je dio bogate zaostavštine čuvenih pomoraca i trgovaca dobrotske porodice Dabinović. Predmetni kompleks nastao je i razvijao se kroz više od 3 vijeka, a smatra se da je baroknu palatu kao izraz vrhunca moći porodice krajem 17. vijeka podigao Đuro Dabinović zvani Kokot. Pored baroknog sklopa i složene hronologije, naročito je značajna zapadna fasada palate, prema moru, koja je izrađena od najfinijeg korčulanskog kamena, sa raskošnim baroknim dekoracijama, otvora prozora i vrata, vijenaca, ograde i konzola balkona. Kompleks danas predstavlja napuštenu ruševinu išaranu grafitima, utopljenu u more okolnih savremenih objekata podignutih na nekadašnjem vlastelinskom imanju, znatno većem od onog koje danas zatičemo. Ipak, njena raskošna ljepota i arhitektonski sklad su neupitni, pa iako je u zapuštenom stanju, predstavlja biser arhitekture Dobrote i Kotora.
