Hello SoCal Climbers. SCCC wants to remind everyone that The Riverside Quarry remains closed. The closure is due to the very nearby construction of a new housing development (400+ homes) and a new park at the base of the crag. We are actively working with the Jurupa Valley Parks Department and the Access Fund to ensure that climbing access is re-established after construction is completed. It is important that climbers respect the closure, both for safetys sake (the area will be an active construction site, and construction could destabilize climbs), and to help the climbing community maintain the good-will of local land managers. Moving Forwards . We experience the turning of the wheel today as we celebrate the Autumn Equinox. Lets talk about the importance of being selective about the companies you support with your dollars. In a capitalistic society money dictates action and for the sake of our conversation today, I want you to think of your dollars as votes. When you give a dollar to a company you are essentially telling that company “I vote for you and condone your actions, keep doing that”. Why am I saying this? Because we need to have a serious talk about @blackdiamond. For the folks that are unfamiliar, Black Diamond makes climbing and outdoor gear. But...did you know their parent company also specializes in non-lethal and lethal weapons manufacturing? That they are one of the biggest suppliers of armor and riot gear to law enforcement. And if you are one of the many lucky souls that got to learn what tear gas feels like during our current protests, during Standing Rock, and/or at the borders of this country while trying to seek a better life it is HIGHLY likely it was made by....yep you guessed it Black Diamonds momma. Now I say this with some levity but there is actually nothing funny about it. This company and its CEO Warren Kanders has become filthy rich supporting the police state and human suffering...as consumers every time we vote for Black Diamond we are complicit in supporting state and federally sanctioned violence both in the US and overseas. Want to know what Kanders had to say for himself...heres a quote. “I’m very comfortable with our business—we’re technological leaders in every aspect of what we do. We expect to continue that…I feel good about it.” So whats next? Im not saying we should gather all our @blackdiamond gear and burn it. What I am saying is if we are serious about changing this world we HAVE to be conscious of who we vote for, with our ballots and our dollars. Our deer friends just stopping by to say hi. 🦌🦌🤎 Introducing our latest creation here at The Salish Seaside Escapes: The Karen Elizabeth Rennie Memorial Wall (1958-2020). Karen was the wife of owner, Leonard Sweet, and loving mother to Thane, Soren, and Egil Sweet. Back before it was The Salish, our little escape was known as North Shore Cottages. Karen helped get the business off the ground, at times doing the cleaning, groundwork, reservations, managing, and greeting, all while raising three young kids. She was the embodiment of what it means to be a “family business”, and The Salish will forever strive towards her level of hospitality. The features of the wall include a white slate birch tree, representative of her favorite white birch tree on the property that cascades over the water. There are also two windows created from river rock, which double as bird feeders so that even in memoriam she can feed and watch the birds like she so loved to do. There are two hand-blown glass Stellar Jays, one of her favorite birds that you just might see around the grounds. The central Jay is a commissioned piece with her ashes swirled through the glass. And finally, on the backside of the wall, a hummingbird. Karen loved the hummingbirds almost as much as they loved her. During wintertime, they never left, as they knew and trusted she would always have a fresh batch of nectar for them hanging from the trees. This wall was built by the hands of Tim Kebler and Karen’s oldest son, Thane, but each Sweet family member made sure they got to place a stone or two upon the wall. There is so much to say, but sometimes words don’t do justice to the feelings a place evokes. The Indian Falls Interpretive trail got some major improvements this week. Here is the crew making progress on the staircases for the trail. Its a short but steep hike to see Indian Falls. When trails need to be above grade, staircases are installed to help decrease erosion. By using native rock to build the staircase the crew created a durable surface for users while decreasing soil runoff into Indian Creek. Op het terrein van het Dolhuys zijn een paar incomplete skeletten gevonden. 🔎 Bijzonder is dat de skeletten in de richting noord-zuid lagen en buiten de poort begraven waren. Het was vroeger gebruikelijk dat overledenen met hun voeten naar het oosten en hun hoofd naar het westen werden begraven. Fysisch antropologisch onderzoek kan misschien uitwijzen wat de reden hiervoor was. 🕵️♂️ Was er een epidemie en moesten mensen snel begraven worden? We weten het (nog) niet. Aan het onderzoek werkten leden van de Archeologische Werkgroep Haarlem e.o. mee. Zij assisteerden Archeologisch Bureau BAAC. Fall is coming and we had another great day collecting #fossil leaves 🍁 from the Cretaceous (about 100 million years ago)! These will hopefully help us better understand Minnesota’s past climate. Just look at all that future data! The leaves have to be split from some pretty solid rock, so we’re working with hammers and chisels. - 🔥 The remains of a huge 300-Million-Year-Old shark skull have been found deep inside an underground Kentucky cave. Its a long way from the ocean today, but the discovery shows that this ancient underground labyrinth was once a vast ocean riddled with sharks.
I was contacted by @eyeworks_for_film to design and create these lenses for @redgirlfx at the @the_prosthetics_event. They gave me cart blanche to design and paint the lenses as long as it went with the makeup. I wanted to put my artistic skills to the test, since I’m not always allowed to run amuck with designing. So I came up with this. I want to thank @eyeworks_for_film for contacting me about this project, it was beyond fun. Miko and I camped out this weekend at Black Mountain and like always, it was worth it! Unfortunately this time around it was very shocking to see the amount of people (Which is fine, I understand it’s the weekend) but the amount of TRASH left behind was actually insane. I have never seen it like this before and it was both infuriating and sad. There wasn’t a spot where we went to that didn’t have any toilet paper (USED) or trash laying around. We are devastated to share that, despite numerous creative solutions to all of the challenges that 2020 has thrown our way, the permit for the 2020 Kodiak Ultra Marathons has been revoked by San Bernardino National Forest officials as all recreational activity in the National Forest has been cancelled. The San Bernardino National Forest is one of eight national forests closed to ALL activity due to severe fire danger and incredibly limited resources. The 2020 Kodiak Ultra Marathons scheduled for September 9-13 is cancelled. As soon as the forest closure was announced, we contacted Marc Stamer, the District Ranger of the San Bernardino National Forest, who also happens to live just down our street. We hopped on our bikes and rode down the street to find out exactly how this closure would impact our race. He opened the door and we knew right away the unfortunate fate of this year’s race. Marc told us that while the closure will be re-evaluated on a daily basis, it is currently planned for at least seven days. This forest has not been closed since the destructive 2007 Butler Fire. Currently, the El Dorado fire is burning in the neighboring Yucaipa area and is not a threat to the Big Bear Valley. However, Santa Ana winds are predicted to increase in the area. The combination of these strong winds and extremely high temperatures pose severe fire danger. The complete closure of these Southern California National Forests is necessary to get the public off of forest land for their own safety in addition to the safety of our firefighters. This is a monumental fire threat. For more information, please see the USFS news release here: www.fs.usda.gov/r5 Runner safety is our number one priority. We are evaluating all options and we are devastated knowing the disappointment and disruption this will cause to our runners. Tripod Rock + extras in Butler, NJ 😍🌳🍃⛰ Ever have one of those days where 5 miles feels like 12? That was this trail for me. I was excited to finally see Tripod Rock (which is so much bigger than pictures do justice!) but it was just a never ending trail lol Yellow, blue, and orange trails that make up parts of this All Trails map are very rocky, smell like human pee, and have so many snakes. Bits of scrambling but mostly just a cardio hike. 😭🐍 Blue trail has great views and orange trail follows the reservoir beautifully. White trail is where you’ll find Tripod Rock. Commitment...to an objective...to the process...to improving...to taking the risk. I think that’s what I love most about climbing. Highballs have a special relationship with commitment. 10 years after Ambrosia, it was awesome to feel the fire for highball bouldering again thanks to this stunning line in Salt Point State Park. I’m gonna spend a few posts going back in time and share what led me to highballs to begin with, how they ultimately pushed me to find a new discipline of climbing, and come full circle with some send photos of the new line. Its time to get sendy. I want to refresh, and clarify, my offer to younger climbers. If you need to bail from a climbing route, and you need to build your own anchor, I will buy your second piece of gear. Rappelling on one piece of trad gear is sketchy, and makes your mom really nervous...if she only knew. Now the financial part of your decision to bail from one piece of gear is totally gone. More details can be found at the @enormocast podcast, episode 196. Clarification: I want you to make a two piece anchor...opposed to, I placed a nut and backed it up with a cam. If you are going to leave a cam, have it share the load, opposed to a backup piece. If you need to leave a cam to make a bomber anchor, do it, gear can be replaced, you cant. Look long and hard for two good stopper placements first please, #notanATMmachine To cash in: -Send me a picture of the anchor -You need to be under 30 years old -You need to discuss with me what you did right, and what youd change next time. We are all learning, and I will never talk smack about an anchor you built. . Holy smokes!!! The first two days of @pikespeakapex have been hectic!!! Stage 1/prologue was the first outing on my brand new @ridecannondale Scalpel!!! The bike was absolutely shredding in preride but unfortunately I didn’t have new bike day luck, putting a massive hole in my tire in the first 10 minutes. I ended up having to ride the next 40 minutes on the rim, losing 10 minutes in GC which was a bummer. Stage 2 was going to be an uphill battle (literally), seeing as I was starting in 80th place, over 3 min back. Managed to have a monster effort on the day and get up to 35th place and 40th overall. Super stoked to rip tomorrow and Sunday’s stage and hopefully pull back some more places!!! - @tydeman.newman on Instagram

In many cultures, the color red symbolizes luck, and you sure need a lot of luck to find red sea glass! Red sea glass is extremely rare and only around 1 in every 5,000 pieces of sea glass is red. This rarity is largely because red glass is challenging and expensive to make. In order to produce the deep ruby-red color, glass makers traditionally needed to add gold to the molten glass! This gold-infused red glass first became widely popular in the 1800s and was seen in Victorian lamps, rare dishware and in stained-glass windows. A very limited amount of red glass has been mass produced since the 1930s, so if you find a piece of deep ruby sea glass on Spectacle Island it is safe to guess about its age. More modern methods to produce red glass are less expensive and include a combined mixture of selenium and cadmium sulfide. This type of modern red glass is usually brighter than the gold inflused ‘ruby red’ glass and is often used to make boat lights. While not monetarily valuable like a true red gem, These ‘beach rubies’ are incredibly valuable to and legally protected by the state of Massachusetts. Sea glass not only holds important stories about Spectacle Island, but also provides us with a window into the lives of Bostonians and Americans of the past. If you are lucky enough to find one of these precious gems, embrace your good fortune, take a photo and then leave it behind. If you can’t bear to leave such a rare treasure on the beach, feel free to bring the piece of red sea glass to a ranger who will add it to our archaeological log and display. As soon as a piece of sea glass is taken home, the story and beauty that that piece holds is gone from the public forever. What is Wilderness? Wilderness is a land designation that receives the highest level of federal protections. This land is set aside to preserve natural ecosystems, be free of modern development, and provide for experiences of solitude and adventure. Wilderness areas are afforded protections that influence how we climb in these landscapes, including: •Preserving wild, self-reliant, and challenging climbing experiences •Pequiring the traditional craft of hand-drilling to place fixed anchors and not allowing the use of power drills •Limiting the number of fixed anchors and equipment (like bolts) to be rare across a landscape and only placed occasionally on climbs. Development of sport climbs isn’t appropriate in wilderness. •Implementing protections or closures to preserve biological and cultural resources, or social conditions. .
