Our new Pandemic Emergency Response Unit! Unusual times require creative and unique solutions. Yesterday, we moved Rescue 77 to Station 6 and dedicated it solely to Pandemic priority medical response. We are hoping to limit exposure to our other response units while adding and upgrading the level of personal protection equipment for these two first responders while limiting EMS equipment that could get contaminated am adding more decontamination options and procedures. Amazingly, we have fire personnel volunteering to staff this new unit. My thanks to Captain Martin and Firefighter Carpenter who first staffed Rescue 6 yesterday. They already have started to make changes and improvements to configuration, equipment, process.and procedure. Register: tinyurl.com/y57u3omd We are a group of educators, parents, and community advocates hosting a panel discussion this Tuesday evening (6:30) to address the many concerns related to school reopening in NYC. In an effort to offer transparency and honesty, our panelists will represent multiple perspectives and experiences. There will be time for parents to ask questions following the panel. While we definitely plan to discuss the chaotic, rushed reopening of NYC schools, we hope this event will allow us to get beyond the symptoms of our school crisis and strategize about the underlying cause: our schools are catastrophically underfunded. This point will be driven home by panelists from the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE). To avoid addressing our school funding crisis, the Mayor and schools chancellor continue promoting the illusion that the hybrid model is safe, and that our problems will be solved once schools open for some amount of “in-person” learning. The truth is that hybrid learning wont be safe and it wont be a return to normal for anyone: not for students, families, or school communities. Just one week into hybrid learning, weve seen, students with IEPs and language learning needs are not being properly serviced. Despite having six months to prepare for reopening, the city failed to address even basic technology problems, leaving many students without the ability to log on for class. At the same time, even more catastrophic budget cuts are in the works. It can be difficult to connect the dots between historically under-resourced schools and the school reopening mess. We see this panel discussion as part of larger, ongoing work of building coalitions between families, community organizers, and educators. We met her in January of 2016. We said goodbye to her today. For almost 5 years she was a part of our family. She showed us what unconditional love is. Her favorite place was always wherever her people were. They say a dog can take your sadness from you. I can tell you this is true. For the last 10 months, #cococallahan took my grief, my sadness, and my stress on herself. I think maybe it was just too much for her little body. In the end, bone cancer took her from us much too quickly. She passed quietly today with her beautiful head resting in my hands.
