Even though it was not one of my best result it’s the one performance from the Australian IRONMAN championships at Foster-Tuncurry that I remember most fondly. After a terrible ride where I got dropped from the pro pack, I was not where I wanted to be off the pace with 30km to go. I had to think positively so I sat up for the final 30k and took on an ANZAC cookie at each aid station and made sure I drank a lot and released the back. Coming into T2 I thought my race was completely over but to my amazement I had some good legs and ran from outside the top 20 into 8th place holding off a fast finishing David Meade. I LOVED this workout. These videos show my final round of OHS and burpees. Something about being at the track made this workout so fun. I’m very happy with our game plan and execution on this one. I’m honestly not sure what I would have done differently other than not getting a stupid no rep for trying to adjust my bar during my burpee🤦🏼♀️ reminder: you can’t touch the bar during a burpee- DUH! We worked on running this year, but not enough and it definitely showed in this workout. Sadly I’ll have to wait a little longer to race again. I’ve had a niggling foot issue for 3 years (!) and finally got an answer and treatment in the last few weeks. Thankfully nothing too serious. With very few races on the horizon and the pain getting worse over lockdown...with limited physio...it made sense not to take a risk, to use this time to let my foot recover fully and start Olympic year prep (again) with zero pain. Here I am, running on hope across the finish line of the 2019 Western States 100. It took a recent conversation with @jwlevitt for me to realize that I really was running on hope that day (you can listen to that conversation on his podcast linked in my bio). Hope that the sun keeps rising for Gabe, and for everyone who suffers. Hope that cotton candy skies can follow the longest, darkest nights. Hope that undying love lives on in the great expanse. Hope that even when the light goes out, the darkness is there to wrap us in its warm embrace. Hope that even though I didn’t visit my dad in the hospital before he died all those years ago that his final moments were filled with Love and Grace just like they were for Gabe. Hope that anyone who feels alone, like my dad often did, is never really actually alone. Hope that loved ones lost live on in the people and things they love. Hope that with the crushing agony of grief also comes new ways of connecting with loved ones lost. Hope that Love is never, ever lost. For the love of the sport. ... Over the course of the last month, myself and four other post-collegiate runners set out to right some wrongs with our previous track PRs. In the span of three weeks, a mile, 3k, 5k, and 10k time trials were run in front of small audiences of friends and family on whatever open track we could find in Minneapolis. Aside from the Vaporfly shoes that were worn, there was nothing fancy about our Friday night time trials. We’ve all had a lot of time to think lately. That’s saying a lot because I generally have a lot of time with just my thoughts as an endurance athlete. Since track meets started getting cancelled a few weeks ago, I’ve become a semiprofessional virus tracker. I knew deep down that this was going to be bad, very bad, and how that would personally affect what I have been working towards for the past 4 years to a decade: the Olympic Games (likely my last chance). I know there are a lot of people around the world in unimaginably tougher circumstances - my heart goes out to all of those that have lost a loved one as well as the people working in hospitals and testing centres right now and in days and weeks to come. YOU are the real MVPs! I live a life that only a lucky few get to experience, and in reality, my daily life is not dramatically affected. That doesn’t mean the COC and ultimately the IOC’s decision did not affect me emotionally. Many of you know the IOC announced that the Olympics will be postponed until summer 2021. This is, without a doubt, the right decision. I have been asked a lot by family and friends, what my plan was after Tokyo. I answered them all the same, “I’m not thinking much past Tokyo, to be completely honest with you.” As a professional athlete, trying to squeeze out every ounce of your potential requires complete unwavering focus, to the point that nothing even exists past a certain date. That date for me was August 3, 2020, the final of the Olympic Games Steeplechase. I’d coincidentally turn 31 on the day of the final and (spoiler alert) I won’t be any younger in 2021. It has been a bumpy few years for me in this sport - I haven’t really had a race or performance that I was truly happy with, or more importantly (to me anyway), proud of. I started to think my best days were behind me. However, this winter I was able to run the Olympic standard in the 5000m, an event which is not my specialty. This gave me the confidence, but more importantly the belief, that my best days are still ahead. So, its back to the grind stone for me, because you can always get stronger and better and that will be my aim for 2021. - @hughesteeple on Instagram

In honor of Penn Relays Weekend - throwing it back to our 2018 SMR win. 🙌🏾 This win meant a lot because the year before we thought we had secured the wheel by leading the whole race and winning the “fast” heat by nearly 2 seconds. However, after being given the wheel & celebrating, a team from the “slow” heat ran slightly faster than we did, and the staff came and took the wheel away from us. We felt we had been robbed and were determined to come back in 2018 and take what was ours. Four rounds in two days was a daunting task for both Melinda Gainsford-Taylor and Cathy Freeman who has competed in multi-rounds earlier in the program over 100m and 400m respectively. But at the end, they both achieved season best times – a remarkable achievement, placing fifth and sixth respectively. Gainsford-Taylor was in her comeback season from a near career-threatening knee injury, going on to make her first Olympic final at her third attempt. It is a nice feeling after three Olympics to actually peak in Sydney. I would have liked to have been up there with a shot at the medals,” she said. It was very close. My first Olympic final. Liz McColgan is a legend and pioneer in the sport of track and field. She won the first-ever womens 10K at the Commonwealth Games in 1986. She competed in the first-ever Olympic 10,000 meter event for women in Seoul in 1988 (and earned a silver). She became a World Champion in 1991 just 9 months after giving birth to her daughter. She won the first-ever World Half Marathon Championship for women in 1992, and she won 3 World Marathon Majors (before they were called that) with victories in NYC, London, and Tokyo. She was also a pioneer in less fortunate ways as an athlete who lost gold medals to dopers and who lost her sponsorship with Nike due to pregnancy. Both experiences almost ended her career prematurely. Through it all, she remained the same hard-working, fiercely-competitive athlete with integrity who believed in doing things the right way. In this episode with @karagoucher and @roguechris, @lizmccolgan holds nothing back as we discuss it all from being bullied growing up in Scotland to competing in those pioneering days for womens athletics and now to coaching kids and elite athletes (including her daughter Eilish and US marathoner Allie Kieffer) in a sport at risk due to doping, shoe technology and the power dynamics within governing bodies. Liz provides great perspective on competing herself in an era dominated by steroids and EPO as well as what she believes should be done to level the playing field and clean up the sport today (hint: lifetime bans for athletes AND coaches plus standardized shoe specs). Today is #olympicday, and it certainly brings back memories! Many people are posting about their brilliant Olympic experiences, I’m jealous! My experience was shit....I ran like a donkey!! As a kid, the #olympics inspired me, and I did dream of representing Ireland one day at the games. That dream came through in 2008, and it didn’t go well, I bombed!! At the time I hated my Olympic experience, but now looking back at my career, it was a massive learning curve which turned out to have a major impact on my career and for that reason it couldn’t have been more of a positive experience! So to all the athletes who strive each and every day to realise their dreams, rock on and godspeed! Life is short, and a sporting career is even shorter! I can now say that becoming an #olympian is one of my proudest achievements. It’s devastating to see so many cross-country and track programs shutting down across the country but the reality is, funding for collegiate athletics is kind of a mess 💔 To break it down, you have to remember 3 things: 1️⃣ Olympic sports are not money-makers. Football and sometimes basketball are the primary revenue sports for athletic departments and with the loss of the NCAA Tournament last spring, football for some conferences, and no fans/reduced capacity in stadiums — every school is hurting for money. 2️⃣ Schools spend A LOT of money on coaching salaries (not usually for the XC coach...). When a FB or MBB coach gets fired before their contract ends, they’re usually being paid a buyout AND then a department has to pull together the money for a flashy salary to lure in a new coach and their staff. 3️⃣ There is a facilities arms race going on, where each school wants to attract the best recruits by having an incredible athletic complex- the best fields, stadiums, locker rooms, performance centers, dining halls, and, yes, nap rooms and slides. 🆒 So, the bottom line: there isn’t really an incentive for athletic departments to save money for a rainy day. They can’t tap into university endowments because that money is usually earmarked for other university uses. THE FINISH LINE Todays thesis submission was pure relief for me. Putting all that laboratory scramble during lockdown into an 86 page report. That should mark the end of all my uni courses. Its been an absolute grind, now a week of waiting before I know how much worth it was. Had to give it my all to get through each assessment task, trying to will a wounded mind and body over the line time and time again. The journey of the past 4.5 years has been a rollercoaster. If Im honest some highs mightve been too high and lows too low. At the end of the day its been eye opening and hopefully rewarding The next phase into becoming an engineer now begins. With the next phase as a runner also coming into effect, the road might be twice as long. I dont mind. In fact Im excited for the journey ahead. Maybe Im not leaving, maybe Im going home. Deutschen Mannschaftsmeistertitel bei den @diefinals_berlin2019 erkämpfen. Der Dank geht raus an das gesamte Team, vor allem an alle Betreuer, sowie Sponsorpartner. 10 years later. Still one of the best days. Franklin Field was packed for the @pennrelays, 50,000+ for a track meet, mostly to see @usainbolt anchor the Jamaican 4x100m team to victory with his earth shaking 8.8 second final leg. But soon after, our ragtag @uvatfcc guys took a shot at the best teams in the country and aided by a heroic late kick by @ra_andrews we squeaked by @oregontf to win the Championships of America 4x800m. An incredible memory with teammates, frozen in time. Lead off leg, Alex Bowman, now a teacher I’m Detroit. Second leg, Lance Roller, now finishing his PhD in Nashville, I ran third and freshman @ra_andrews on anchor who went on to make the 2016 US Olympic team. Old grainy video linked in bio. Build up for 5th appearance at @londonmarathon almost in the books, and unfortunately the last few weeks haven’t gone smoothly. It’s easy to focus on the aches and pains, but got to focus on the positives now and hope somehow all feels ok come race day. I’ve always preached about looking back on the good sessions, to try and build confidence, so here goes... This is the 11th marathon build up I’ve been through, and over the last 80 days I’ve run 1165 miles (14.5mi a day or 102mi a week for 11.5 wks). I’ve completed 25 sessions of marathon pace or quicker, so plenty of work in the bank. That’s on top of the build up that never was for April. I can moan all I want about the little niggle, and trust me I will, but the wife is now 36 weeks pregnant🤰🏽, and Nico 😿 has been through neutering, so I’ll leave it to you to decide who has suffered the most these last few months 😂 Thanks for all the messages of support, will give it all I can on Sunday! #hokaoneone #londonmarathon #the40thrace #maurten - @aaronscottruns on Instagram
