Update: the Woodward fire has yet to expand close enough to Bolinas to require mandatory evacuations. Ive been going down during the day to keep things floating but spending the nights at my family’s home in point Reyes just outside the evacuation warning zone. While it feels safe enough to continue working right now, and my neighboring farms are still operating, I honestly just need a fucking break. Between COVID, the regular daily struggles of farming, and now fire season starting I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to find the time to take even one day off this season. I’ve been struggling with what it means to be a “resilient farmer” and how toxic masculinity in agriculture is compelling every bone in my body to continue working and powering through because I am an essential worker and it is my responsibility to keep food on the table or else my customers may be forced to purchase from a more exploitative industrial farm. But right now it’s a stressful fucking time. I’m seeing my community lose their homes, mental, and physical well-being to fire, disease, and police, and I don’t want to put career and capitalism ahead of care and emotional support. I don’t want to put any more stress on my employees who already work way harder than I can afford to pay them by having them come into an evacuation warning zone. I don’t want to conflate my resiliency with martyrdom in a system that doesn’t compensate farmers and workers financially enough to do so. There is a culture of admiring “resilient” farmers who post about how despite the fires, storms, heat, and lack of sleep they are still committed to showing up to market or CSA, but that attitude is toxic, it is patriarchal, it is martyrdom, and it is colonial. We should be supporting farmers so they are able to take time for their health during weeks of compounding crises, not celebrating work above all else. Resiliency is creating structures that allow and expect farmers to take time to heal. Lets get beyond normalizing/thanking latinx crews for working in the smoke and demand the creation of systems that function without sacrificial workers. PS: wine grapes and cut flowers are not essential, get your workers inside. - @shaoshanfarm on Instagram
