Por outro lado, sabemos que a luta pela sobrevivência dos animais, que não foram diretamente atingidos pelo fogo, deverá aumentar (competição e predação). We currently have six coyotes in care. Each arrived separately as pups and once they completed their quarantine and were healthy, they were each introduced to the existing coyotes. This can be a difficult situation, as it is possible that any of the coyotes may not accept a new one or that the introduction of a new coyote can change the social structure such that they fight or become combative. According to local informants, there has been a rise in wild cats being targeted for bushmeat. ☠️ The cat was said to have come into a house/garden to catch fish from a pond, and was killed before being butchered. ☠️ The suspect will be taken to courts tomorrow. KNP LION PRIDE USED TO CARS, BE CAUTIOUS The Kruger National Park (KNP) Management has received reports of a pride of lions north of Satara which are showing abnormal behaviour around vehicles such as the biting of tyres.  Visitors who come across lions displaying such behaviour should ensure that their windows remain closed and those on Open Safari Vehicles should ensure that that they remain silent and keep all arms, heads etc. within the structure of the vehicle. Appealing to the public, the KNP Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips said “We have received information from various tourists who have witnessed this behaviour. We would like to appeal to the open safari vehicle operators specifically to be on the look-out as the behaviour of the pride is of concern and might pose danger to occupants”. Veterinary Wildlife Services will be collaring a member of this pride to monitor movements and will also mark all members of the pride to allow for identification. Guests who might have taken photos/video or have feedback on the pride are encouraged to share or post these on our social media platforms; so that management are in a position to try to identify whether it is only specific member of the pride or whether the entire pride has developed this behaviour. Guests are requested to photograph the lions in such a way to capture branding marks or ear notches. “We also request visitors not to get too close to any animals for footage at a sighting, or refrain from placing any items on the vehicle exterior or tyres which might attract and encourage animals to approach the vehicle”; concluded Phillips. Update on the Mpindo: A mixed bag to say the least. The team has been following the pack day by day. Sadly they have been documenting more loses, while at the same time witnessing the pack clearly getting to grips with the challenging task of hunting. The pack had moved south into an area with no roads so we have been waiting for some days for them to re-appear. They finally did on Wednesday evening and were seen killing a waterbuck. Before they had a chance to feed on their kill, 2 lions stole it from them and 13 hyenas were counted at the kill sight as well. On Thursday morning, the team only counted 12 dogs in total. This serves to underline the tremendous pressure they are under, and while honing their hunting skills, they are still on a very steep learning curve when it comes to avoiding bigger predators. This rustic Luwi Bush Camp stands in a small grove of mahogany trees and has great views over a floodplain to the Luwi riverbed beyond. Although the camp is away from the main Luangwa River, there are two permanent lagoons here, each with an impressive population of hippo and crocodile. This camp houses only 5 chalets which means that individual attention is tailored for each guests’ experience. Each chalet is en-suite. The main area of the camp is comprised of a thatched roof and sandy floor, housing the bar and library. Other communal areas can be found dotted around under trees in the shade. The scientific name of the African #wilddog is lycaon pictus, a latin term meaning #paintedwolf. Similar to other great #African #animals with distinct coat patterns, no two wild dogs have the same spotted patterns - these are unique to individual wild dogs and help members within the pack distinguish between one another. Meet Florence and her daughter Fierce. Both of them form part of the small but strong hyena clan, that we name Fube Clan, in the GMA outside Liuwa NP. We discovered the clan in 2018 and we have started to collect data on them since. A couple of weeks ago I followed Florence and Fierce on a spectacular hunt! Did you know there are only roughly 5000 African wild dogs left in the world? They are very susceptible to disease and often the whole pack will die in one go. They are so endangered mostly due to these infectious diseases, ongoing habitat fragmentation, and conflict with human activities. I love spending time with these animals and watching them hunt. THE PAINTED WOLF.⁠ ⁠ Joie de vivre ............there can no more perfect place than the company of wild dogs at play! This one was one of 3 that had spotted something behind my vehicle. The other two were ahead of him, ears pinned back as they flew straight past me. I just love the expression on the face of this dog; I could not lower my camera further - he was right up against the bonnet, no more than 2 ft away! An interesting update from our trackers in Mana Pools. The Nyamepi pack is well and has been doing a great job protecting its 6 pups. Whisky, the alpha female, left the den with the pups on the 26th August and have been nomadic since. She sadly lost one pup to hyenas a day after she became nomadic but the pack has managed to keep their enemies at bay since. They are doing so well compared to last year, where the pack lost 3 pups within 3 days of leaving the den. Fingers crossed, the pack will successfully raise all 6 to adulthood. Currently, the pack consists of 8 adults, one yearling, Candy (a product of father and daughter), and 6 pups that are a product of brother Gamma, the alpha-male, and sister, Whisky. Both are from the same litter of 2017 by the legendary Black-tip. For many mammal species, protected areas are their last hope, says a new study co-authored by @TheWCS. This includes African wild dogs, which have suffered an 89% range loss in the last 50 years. Today, 71.6% of it is protected. . “There is little doubt that without protected areas we would have lost amazing species like tigers and mountain gorillas, said the paper’s senior author, James Watson from WCS and the University of Queensland. This science clearly shows that to abate the extinction crisis, we need better funded and more protected areas that are well-supported and well-managed by governments and other land managers.” . Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong.
