I’m so full of gratitude as I sit at my station and soak in the space, thinking back on all the memories. I started at Salon 9 in 2006, an excited and nervous 24 year old. Would I make friends? Did I have what it takes to be successful? Could I do this? What followed was 14 years of “yes’s” to all of those questions. I grew up here. Salon 9 is where I learned that I am strong, stronger than I ever believed I could be. It provided for Ryan and I when we first got married, and helped sustain us throughout the years. I made a family here. It was dysfunctional at times and not without it’s little dramas, but a family none the less. It was home away from home. My clients throughout the years have been incredible! I think of so many of them as more than clients. You are family and friends. I’m going to let you in on a little secret...I was never as excited to do your hair as I was just to listen and talk with you! I am so thankful for all of you!! There has been a lot of laughter, tears, potlucks, retreats, trips to O’Hara’s, ensemble Halloween costumes and so much more! The last 3 months gave me the opportunity to really examine my heart and uncover the big dreams that have been quiet and hidden. I believe that God is preparing me for something big-what that is, I don’t exactly know. But I know He is asking me to leave the “known” for His “unknown” and Ryan and I are excited!! Doing hair moving forward is going be a little different, and even I don’t know exactly what that will look like but that’s ok! I’m trusting in the Lord’s security for that. For the past couple of days, I have been immersed in the completely surreal experience of recording the audiobook for my memoir Slow Motion, which was published in 1998 before audiobooks were a big thing. I am reaching back to the lost child I was, the hot mess of a young woman, and to my parents — I am now nearly the age they were when my dad died in a car accident and I became my mother’s caregiver. My son @j_maren is nearly the age I was when I was spiraling downhill in a dangerous way, and was consumed with grief. Oh, life! I am reaching a hand out to that young woman who had no idea who she was or who she would become. And to my parents who lost so much, in the blink of an eye. Turn fear 😬 into courage 💪 One of the easiest ways to change how we feel during the day is to slow down our breathing. When we are fearful or anxious, our breathing is quick and shallow. Slower breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and moves us out of our flight, fight, freeze (stress) response. Take a moment to notice if you are starting your day feeling fearful or uncertain. Acknowledge that feeling and thank it for working to keep you safe and alerting you to the unknowns of the day ahead. Then, try taking five breaths using pursed-lip breathing to transform fear into courage. Breathe in through the nose and slowly breathe out through the mouth with pursed lips (like you are blowing out a candle or spinning a pinwheel – no candle or pinwheel required!). Notice how these slow, pursed lip breaths can change feelings of fear into feelings of courage. Yesterday I signed up for a coaching program to manage my mind and give me the confidence I need to up-level in my own coaching business . It cost a significant chunk of $$$$ for me right now. I could have made lots of objections like: “I’m a new mom so I don’t have any time” “I should be saving not spending money right now” “What if my partner thinks I’m crazy” “I have lots of other big expenses coming up”... . But I chose to listen to these constructive and courageous thoughts instead. These thoughts excite me and inspire me to action: “Now that I’m a new mom, I’m more focused and motivated to create the life I want” “Spending money is how I get the support and things I need” “I am spending money on the exact things I want to” “spending this money is an investment in myself that will pay me back 10-fold” “I only need to worry about my thoughts, no one else’s” “Money flows to me easily when I need it”. . Thoughtwork is powerful. It is what has brought me confidence, clarity and satisfaction. In this picture I am pressing “Go” to pay for the program. I realised I‘ve never really introduced myself to you so lets use this grey morning here in Berlin to enlighten you a bit! ☺️ Hi, I‘m Ailine, I’m a super nerdy and never too serious photographer from Germany. I‘m 39 years old and grew up just outside Berlin where I lived a very picturesque Eastern German childhood playing in the woods, harvesting food, foraging for mushrooms, cooking with my mum and grandmothers, working with wood and smoking fish with my dad and grandfathers and just learning all there is about nature and how to be part of it. My teenagehood I mostly spend partying in Berlin or nerding in front of my computer which lead to me moving out when I was almost 18 as naturally, the countryside life was not for me anymore. In my early twenties I got into web design and photography which lead to studying both, but only finishing the photo studies. A love was found. Fast forward 10 years and I‘m working as an advertising photographer traveling the world and taking pictures of people enjoying their life for money. I love that job, the people I get to meet through it and the places it takes me a lot. ❤️ In 2014 I started going to Cape Town a lot for as we call it „the season“ as when its winter here in Berlin, its summer down there and a lot of clients produce their spring/summer campaigns there. Being able to work there through winter and falling in love with South Africa made me get a flat there in 2017 and make it my second home permanently. Last year, even before Corona started, I knew it‘ll eventually become my only home as its been the home I prefer for a while now. Fast forward again we‘re in the midst of a pandemic and I started baking sourdough which led to a new business venture that I will start in South Africa when I‘m back there end of October. Its all very exciting and I hope it‘ll allow me to some day, stay in Cape Town for good. Its my favourite place and I want to help to keep its spirit as its struggling a lot and I feel it needs people to stay, so I‘m staying. 🙏🏼 So there you go, my life in an instagram caption, on a Tuesday morning. It is a great honor to send 200 of our letter stamped snare cord bracelets to WWFUK. The pride we feel at the huge amount of work that goes into each one is immense. From transforming brutal poachers’ snare wire into beads, letter stamping each one before hand crafting each bracelet. It is a labour of love. These bracelets work incredibly hard for conservation. Removing cruel snare wire from circulation, employing local talent, each one donating to conservation in Zambia and then to WWFUK’s critical work by being sold through their online store. Last week, we got back from Italy, barely touched down and I had to head straight to Suffolk to make a short 🎞 🎥 film! @findingwilsonfilm Never did I expect to have the week that followed!! 😂 I was challenged on this one let me tell you.. I’m not allowed to post any pics that give away the plot.. right now at least.. but I am COVERED in scratches, bruises... bites! You know that expression, #sufferforyourart well... 🙈😂 These beautiful woods we shot half of the movie in were alive- we got eaten alive! 😂 Then the stunts have left me hurting!!!! Yes I said stunts!! 💥 However- I got VERY well looked after by the team and the crew! And put up in a very swish 5 star hotel! The reason I did this... @thelucyraynerfoundation I get asked to do a lot of #shortfilms.. and I often say no. But sadly as a family, we have had too many close experiences with suicide and mental health & I really believe in raising awareness, especially for young people! Can’t wait to be able to share it. I’m #Grateful that I was asked to make this film! And for the chance to actually exercise my acting muscle again! Do you ever notice that things always seem to come at you all at once? Or at least in little bunches? . I thought I would do my best to be pretty open. I mean, not to use social media as therapy or something. But to paint things as real as possible. So the happy highlights don’t lead you to believe there is some perfect life or whatnot. . I was feeling sad and tired at work on Thursday night and then went to electrolysis afterwards for a few hours ⚡️⚡️. I love my electrolysis person Layla ❤️ she’s a wonderful and an empathetic soul that I would have never expected to feel so cared about by. We cried about Caitlyn Jenner and some stuff about my my mother whom I haven’t seen since 2006. . Later in the day, recounting some of this to my wife I ended up reviewing things in my past. Things my mind had carefully tucked away to protect me. Trauma from my own childhood. So I spent the next few hours crying and comforting the child Shannon with my wife ❤️ (who is awesome and amazing, so wonderfully supportive). (Then the news about RBG, then someone else I love was struggling as well, *the many things I mentioned) . On one hand it feels completely embarrassing to have these things unprocessed 35 years later. And I’m simultaneously grateful they stayed in their little compartment until I was more emotionally ready and mature. . So today I go easy on myself as best as possible. Pizza 🍕, jalapeño pretzels 🥨 , hugs, maybe some stories so they can let me give mine a break: last air bender, Shitt’s creek and Star Trek NG. I’m really grateful to have a lot of support in my life. I really do. Let me know if there’s any shows I should be watching. I love stories. . I’m not looking for anyone to reach out. I know lots of you have hearts to do that and I really am ok. I just wanted to be real. Life is always an amazing catastrophe. There is no perfection. There is no “always happy.” . I’m having a miscarriage. I had reached out in my stories to ask for others experiences as I really wasn’t sure, and I was blown away by the support I received and by how many people shared with me. After talking with multiple people I was quite sure that it was what was happening, but I was doubting myself as my husband has had a vasectomy and the chances of getting pregnant are so low that it just couldn’t have been that.. right? I ended up going to the ED on Saturday night as I was having huge amounts of pain, had been vomiting and feeling faint. I was happy for my body to do its thing if it was miscarrying, but I was worried about infection. My bloods were clear but did show very low levels of hcg so I have been pregnant recently. The doctor said it was likely an incomplete miscarriage that started with my last bleed that was really unusual and is finishing with this bleed. I’m grateful to have confirmation as I was doubting myself so much because of the vasectomy. I think what really hurts is that the chances of falling pregnant after a vasectomy are supposedly 2 in 1000, and to then lose that baby seems overall so impossibly low. We weren’t trying to get pregnant, and we’re happy with our two boys, but it’s really hard when something is taken away that you didn’t know you kinda wanted. I’m sharing this because I had no idea how many of you have been through this yourself. Because early pregnancy loss happens so often yet is so rarely discussed. And so that you know that I’m a safe place to have this discussion. No one should have to go through this alone, because it feels heartbreaking even with the amount of support I’ve received. Thank you to everyone that has reached out to me, shared stories, given their love and support and held space for me. I appreciate it beyond words. I’d like to thank for @wild.womb.witch not only reaching out with words and love that made me feel so held, but for inspiring me to share this very personal experience. I have had times in my life where i have really struggled with my mental health. Behind even the sunniest of smiles there can be an untold story. There can be pain and immense sadness. We truely have no idea what someone is going through. In the depths of depression feeling there was no way out, i couldn’t find my light, my smile, my soul and felt those feelings of will this lift or is it even worth it. I was very good at pretending, putting on a face to the outside world so many didn’t know. I had been this bubbly positive energy for so long i didn’t feel people would understand, it was really confronting and didn’t want people to see me that way or judge. Internally it was turmoil and those who were there first hand really did know. (I am forever grateful). Along with professional help, trusting that I was still in there - the main thing that got me through was my beautiful family and support network & talking about it. Letting myself feel and knowing that some days nothing would make it feel better and that was okay. With the timing of R U OK day it really could not be more timely given the current circumstances. A lot of people are not okay and it’s completely understandable. Sometimes we are better at looking after others than we are ourselves. We are kinder to our friends & family than we are to ourselves. We can acknowledge others struggles and suppress our own. So i am asking rather than just when we are reminded to, we need to be checking everyday - we also need to sit down and ask ourselves if we are okay. Let’s get comfortable to dig deeper when things are not normal and become comfortable with truely being there for those we care about. Let’s remove the stigma. There is nothing stronger than someone being vulnerable, showing that they are human. You really could give glimmers of hope, soften those clouds of darkness or save a life. I hope everyone is doing okay. Seek small positive energies in your day. Feel that sunshine and watch those beautiful colours rise and fall each day. Let’s be kind to ourselves and to others. Y’all .. I have NOT been feelin’ it this week. I’ve thought about posting, and then I’ve given myself grace and allowed myself to take a break from posting this week. Then, I’ve thought about posting some more and made myself for guilty for not posting. Then, as I was sitting in my car the other day listening to an Ayurveda lecture thinking about wanting to post but having nothing to say, something was mentioned in the lecture about hormones that was absolutely a message I am supposed to share. That message was: “If one gland in the endocrine system is affected, they are all affected.” This is why I almost always see women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) who not only have trouble with insulin resistance but who also have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), along with high or low cortisol, high or low testosterone, as well as low progesterone. The ovaries are affected, the thyroid is affected, the adrenals are affected, the pancreas is affected, the hypothalamus is affected, AND the pituitary gland is affected and they all need to be addressed. What does this mean for you? If you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS and that is the only thing currently being treated your hormones are still imbalanced. If you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s and that is the only thing currently being treated your hormones are still imbalanced. If you have an adrenal issue and that is the only thing currently being treated your hormones are still imbalanced. For at least a decade now, I have been training myself to be a “fierce, independent woman”. My #zodiac sign is Cancer ♋️, and let me tell you, I’m a cancer through and through. I’m stubborn to a fault, and I will struggle with something for a verrrrry long time before asking for help. We hear it in the media all the time... women who are #strong and #independent are portrayed as heroes...someone to look up to. But, something has been sitting heavy with me lately. Why do we push ourselves, our friends, even our daughters to be so independent? Why has that become so valuable in our society? Because let me tell you, my independence did not come from a place of happiness and and ambition. My independence came from literal hell. From #TRAUMA. From the inability to #trust anyone to actually be there for me. From the fear of being let down if I let someone in. Some women are not thriving on their independence. Some of us are constantly fighting for #survival. We’re pushing our way to the top of the food chain because we’ve experienced the bottom and it’s not pretty. Some of us are broken and tired and just waiting for someone to hold us so tight that we no longer feel like we need to have it all together. So, with this, I encourage you to be careful when raising your daughters to be independent women. Yes, it is great to be able to use power tools and change your own flat tire 💪🏻 Yes, there is value in being comfortable in being alone. But be sure that the foundation of that independence is #SELFLOVE. Be sure that the women in your life are independent because they are comfortable in their own skin, and not because they are terrified of trusting anyone enough to let them in. So now you are wondering what do you use!?.🤷‍♀️ If it not says otherwise, everything I use is from the Ordinary. And also, lukewarm water. Not cold, not hot. Lukewarm. This is my daily routine, I will be back with my weekly routines ❤️ 🌄 In the morning I wash with squalane cleanser and dab my skin almost dry. Then some hyaluronic acid and a few drops of water, some niacinamide + zinc and lastly retinol 1% in squalane. I follow up with their moisturizer (which is just a capturer holding everything in). The moisturizer is not enough on its own! Then I use either a (tinted) sunscreen or foundation with spf if I need to leave the house haha! ☀️🌤️⛅ 🌃 In the evening I double cleanse. Always! I use the same squalane cleanser to gently remove makeup/sunscreen/sebum/dirt. (One tip is to gently hold your cleanser covered fingers on your eyelids for 20 seconds so help dissolve mascara and other products.) Then I massage all over my face until I look like a clown. Remember; clown = good here. I the use The Body Shop tea tree clearing facial wash to remove everything the squalane cleanser dissolved. If needed I repeat with a little bit of facial wash. Then I dab my face dry. In the evening I like to use everything in the previous post; lactic acid 10%, azelaic acid, vitamin c suspension mixed in the palm of my hand with some pycnogenol. I let it sink in for about five minutes then I follow up with the moisturizer combined with plant derived hemi-squalane and borage seed oil. 🌌 🛑 During the summer (May/June to August), I avoid retinol during the day and go for a milder lactic acid to avoid unnecessary damage to my skin. Also, I started with milder versions of lactic acid and retinol and worked my way up to the ones I use now. I spend my days putting a smile on my face and getting through work, projects and trying to be up to date with whats going on in this country without completely shutting down. I have been in quarantine since March with little contact of the outside. I miss my friends. I miss shows. I miss walking around the city. I miss my family. Im fortunate to have a job after being unemployed for three months. I never qualified for any government benefits during that time. Im fortunate that next week I will get to spend time with my grandparents and celebrate my Grandpas birthday in the same room. I know that this may be the only time I can go visit them for a very long time. Im fortunate to have a loving and caring husband that will fight by my side till the end of days. Im fortunate to have a support system with such beautiful and encouraging friends. Im scared. Im fear for my life, rights, and future. I fear for my friends rights, livelihood, dreams, lives. Colors are so vivid within my memory... sparking visions of the past that I remember so fondly. «Er ikke det der sånn pyramide greier?» Før ble jeg skuffet og lei meg når disse kommentarene kom. Har hadde jeg startet egen butikk hjemmefra og jobbet på for en bedre inntekt og mer frihet for familien og meg. Og hjelper andre til å få det bedre. Klart det da stikker litt. At noen kunne tro at jeg ville begynne med pyramidespill (som btw er ulovlig i Norge). Så innså jeg at det er uvitenhet. For tidligere så var jeg jo skeptisk selv. Jeg kjente lite til network marketing og direktesalg. Og når man kan for lite om noe, så er det lett å dømme. Det jeg gjorde var å sette meg inn i bransjen. Og da oppdaget jeg en fantastisk arena hvor janteloven blåses vekk og arbeidsmiljøet består av å heie hverandre opp og frem- selv om man i bunn og grunn egentlig er «konkurrenter». Jeg leste meg opp på firmaet og fant et unikt selskap med høyeste etiske moral fra dyrking til ferdig produkt. Dette firmaet ville jeg samarbeide med! Etterhvert som kritikerne så at jeg fikk til noe og at dette ikke var et midlertidig prosjekt, så har de blitt færre. Men likevel får jeg av og til høre det, både ansikt til ansikt og som diskusjonstema når jeg ikke er tilstede. Men nå er det helt i orden. Andres uvitenhet kan ikke jeg stå til ansvar for. Jeg driver ærlig og redelig, og gjør det for meg selv og for å gi barna mine en god fremtid. Og det er det eneste som betyr noe 💙 - @anettenilsson.no on Instagram
