I needed to remove about an 1/8 of an inch from this small part and had to brainstorm a safe way to hold it while cutting it with the table saw. I clamped two pieces of scrap to the sled and wedged the small piece between them. Where to begin. I traded a tiny cutting board for the top piece earlier this year. I assume it was a drop piece from a larger live edge table, but I have no idea. I actually started to seal the top months ago and screwed it up by applying too heavy of coats. Then I hurt my thumb and the whole thing got back burnered. Last week I put it on the router sled and started over from bare wood. And then I started sanding and oiling. And then I oiled some more. There’s a metric shit ton of oil on this thing, but man did it turn out nice. As far as the base, I wasn’t initially sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I didn’t want to go with a conventional look. It needed to be sturdy and stable from all angles which was a bit tricky with the asymmetrical shape of the top. I ended up with two equal tripods. This thing is very stable. I painstakingly tested it before I permanently fixed everything. I picture it as an end table next to a comfortable reading chair in a household with no small children. Dusted off my chisels and mallet for a little clean up of the mortises I routed out yesterday. Um dos projetos dos quais a @expedicaokaterre é mantenedora, a FAM oferece capacitação professional por meio do artesanato em marchetaria. Um dos pontos altos da minha inesquecível viagem para lá, cerca de dois anos atrás, foi visitar a oficina instalada ao ar livre. Ali são produzidos objetos de moda e design para casa (já tenho alguns, amo) a partir da reciclagem das madeiras amazônicas de lei . O lema é: reaproveitar o desperdício. ♡ Fundada em 1994 pelo franco-suíço apaixonado por marcenaria Jean Daniel Valloton e sua mulher Marta, a FAM é um lugar especial. Todo ano eles promovem um piquenique na França no qual arrecadam doações. O primeiro lote foi usado justamente para montar a oficina de madeira, com ferramentas trazidas da Suíça. E o mais lindo é ver todo esse conhecimento ser passado para as crianças com foco na educação ambiental tão importante para elas viverem dali e manterem a floresta de pé. ♡ Minha profunda admiração por esse projeto @ruyctone, um dos tantos trabalhos gigantes que vocês estão realizando a favor da Amazônia - e do Brasil. I’ve been working on this board off and on for months. Finally got it done and I’m very happy with the final result. It’s for one of my very best friends who doesn’t waste time with social media, so I can’t tag him here. When we first discussed what he wanted, he said “is there anything you’ve been wanting to do and haven’t had the chance, or any challenges you’ve been thinking about?” It’s nice to have friends who don’t let you take the easy way out. This board was difficult, but I’m glad I did it. Probably not going to start offering these on the website anytime soon though. For the next couple days we are cutting these beautiful 18 Alaskan Yellow Cedar tapersawn shakes for a very special custom order.... for one of our very valued customers. They will be kiln dried, rebutted & rejointed, and stained with a bleaching oil (as seen in the 3rd picture). This bleaching oil speeds up the weathering process and will turn the shakes into an attractive silvery grey a little faster than usual. How I set my furniture knockdown hardware. Align the base, use a bolt and mallet to mark the location, drill the hole, then countersink for the flange. Then I use wood glue to secure the threaded inserts.
