Effective trauma treatment with a clinically proficient mental health provider can make a huge difference. Similarly, learning tools and practicing skills to modulate fear and to train our bodies to reconnect with resources of resiliency can be of invaluable aid. Grounding techniques to connect with the space around us can also shift our focus into the present so that we become less plagued by memories of the past or anticipatory dread as we think of the future. Neuroblastoma is the most common solid tumour in children after brain tumours with around 100 children diagnosed every year in the UK. Yet, despite vital investment in neuroblastoma research, only one new drug - Dinutuximab-beta - has been made available for children receiving front-line neuroblastoma therapy since the 1980s. Thanks to the 2nd Neuroblastoma New Drug Development Strategy (NDDS) forum, funded by Neuroblastoma UK, we now have a consensus for accelerating drug development and a clear understanding of where we should focus future clinical trials to deliver the best potential outcomes for children with neuroblastoma. An international forum of leading scientists from the UK, Europe and USA, has published an agreed list of genetic targets & drugs that should be advanced for early-phase paediatric clinical trials. Our 2019 was overall probably the best yet, since we started doing this 5 long years ago. BUT don’t get me wrong, nothing came easy - it was (and still is) an exhausting never-ending roller coaster of doubts & unknowns. We went from scrambling to try and secure a restaurant loan, making multiple (rejected) offers on potential brick & mortar spaces - to - giving up and deciding to move back to Tokyo. #maternalambivalence 💫 Feeling sorrow at leaving your babies in childcare/ school after a long gap, yet also relief and excitement about having some time and space for you? . If you’re having mixed feelings at the moment, this is NORMAL. . Maternal ambivalence has become such a loaded term, mothers can feel afraid to even dare speak of it. But it’s a HUMAN phenomenon – and what @alexandrasacksmd calls the ‘push-pull of motherhood’. Of course we feel love, tenderness & wonder. But this is the emotional tug of war - when our baby’s needs conflict with ours. . For example, if you’re being woken multiple times through the night to feed your baby, you might well start to feel exhausted, raging & resentful. Then guilty and sad for even feeling that way. On top of feeling anxious & stressed amid Covid. Sound familiar? . Add to this the modern pressures of perfect parenting. Trying to be Supermum disallows ‘negative’ feelings about motherhood such as maternal rage. So they’re often suffered in silence - reinforcing shame and guilt. . BUT…. Here’s the thing… Recognising the role of maternal ambivalence can soften that hard nub of feelings. Bringing those dark, spiky, feared parts of ourselves into consciousness and getting to know them. . The problem lies not in the feelings – usually temporary – but in the fear of voicing them & the subsequent guilt. . 💫 I love this quote from Lisa Baraitser (2009). She says the transformation to motherhood is less a magical one of caterpillar to butterfly and more a creative process of imitation akin to wig-wearing. At first it feels weird, clunky, even artificial (anyone felt weird calling themselves ‘mum’ in the early days?). . 💫Transformation is gradual – emerging through the small everyday moments of undoing, like crying for no apparent reason or struggling to put a nappy on. In these mundane moments we as mothers creatively renew our sense of self. We learn that we exist without dissolving into the needs of our baby. We learn that the struggle around identifying our own needs is NORMAL. . This is accepting maternal ambivalence. What’s your experience? - @_drboyd on Instagram
