CREATURE FEATURE: Southeastern Pocket Gopher As you are driving down the highway, ever wonder what makes those sandy mounds on the grassy sides of the road? It is likely a Southeastern pocket gopher, a resident of Florida, Georgia and Alabama. These rodents grow up to 11 inches head to tip of tail and only weigh up to 10 ounces. They are also known as “sandy mounders.” Feeding on plant roots using their large buck teeth, these animals rarely come to the surface, but when they do, they make the mounds which consist of excavated sand and soil. They carry extra food on the sides of their mouths in “pockets” to store for later use. With a short rat-like tail, they are brownish in color and can dig a tunnel system up to six feet underground. One studied gopher had a burrow system extending almost 500 feet in length! Because they live below the surface, they have tiny eyes and ears and use a good sense of smell to find food. Pocket gophers aid the ecosystem by aerating the soil (as do worms). Other small animals also use the pocket gopher burrows. Our native pocket gophers’ population is threatened by land use changes such as residential and commercial development. Next time you are on the road, keep an eye out for the sandy mounder! Amazing to be back in the Pilanesberg after spending a year in the Okavango, seeing old faces again was nostalgic for me, spent some time with Rain and her cubs on a rainy afternoon while they searched for prey and quenched their thirst from pools of rain water in the road. What was really special about this sighting for me was that I had her and the previous set of cubs (around the same age) on the same road and the exact same spot! Lioness Siena from the Marsh Pride in the Maasai Mari was badly injured after a horn of a buffalo punctured her left lower flank. Safari guides saw her and called up rangers who alerted veterinarian Dr Njoroge from Kenya Wildlife Service. Him and his team treated Siena which took a little over an hour. Two days later she was spotted doing remarkably well, we hope she is able to continue to improve. So while Bambi might be on the TV screen, the reality is that battles in the African Savannah rage on. Are they always pretty to watch ? No. Are they sometimes gut wrenching ? Yes. Nature doesnt take favourites. Nature doesnt discriminate. It is just a perfect balance. Always. A Hyena, in this instance, lost the battle. Broken back legs, blood, mud. Its raw. Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs!
