Dear friends. We are safe and the fires are north of us. Unfortunately many of our friends have lost homes and businesses. The photo is of our Estate vineyard that was destroyed in the 2017 fires now in an eerie smoky haze. The winery is closed until this climate crises event is under control and the air is safe to breathe. The following is an edited response I gave to someone questioning why I would refer to it as a climate change event and tried to blame our state administration for poor forest management when most of the forest land is Federal land - - “The current administration and “conservative” media divert blame and obfuscate the root of the issue - which is climate change. This should not be a partisan issue. Climate change will eventually impact all living things. You can’t blame forest management for rising temperatures. We have been farming grapes for 35 years and I have lived most of my life in farming communities. I have witnessed the changes. Empirical and scientific evidence proves climate change is happening. You can’t blame weather extremes, melting glaciers and ice caps on forest management. Dead trees and dry undergrowth are a symptom of climate change. Extreme weather and fire seasons were predicted decades ago. The wine industry is the bellwether for climate change. When oceans rise and the cost of food goes through the roof, others will begin to feel our pain and call it out for what it is. A true conservative should see the economic value in a healthy environment. Great news from our urban winery in Battersea; our first English red wine is nearly finished! After 10 months resting in barrel it was racked from barrel yesterday and will be bottled sans fining/filtration on Friday. A proper vin de soif style, juicy, delicious and full of cherry fruit. If anything it might be just a little too easy to drink *hic* We have also been out to visit the vineyard for this years version 2.0 and it’s looking fabulous. Small bunches of Pinot Noir Precoce that are packed with flavour. They just need a few more weeks to really hit the spot. Our Viti team donned the attire of #Barossa vine pruners of the early 1900’s to revive the ancient practice of burning the vine canes at our Daylight Chamber vineyard. Using a borrowed antique metal Barossa cane burning trolley, they brought in ‘Bear’, a local Draught Horse, to lend a hand. It brought a bit of enjoyment to what is usually slow and arduous work of hand pruning, especially in the middle of winter, but was a reminder that some of the most traditional viticultural practices are still more than relevant today, while honouring the groundwork laid down by the past generations of Barossa grape growers. REALIZARÁN EXÁMENES PCR A TRABAJADORES DURANTE LAS LABORES EN VERDE Y PRÓXIMA COSECHA Continuando con su trabajo de prevención y control para seguir enfrentando la actual pandemia en Atacama, Servicio de Salud, Seremi de Agricultura y la Asociación de Productores y Exportadores Agrícolas del Valle de Copiapó (Apeco) llevarán a cabo un importante despliegue para practicar exámenes PCR a las personas que se desempeñarán durante las labores en verde y próxima cosecha en el valle. Al respecto, el Intendente de Atacama, Patricio Urquieta, explicó que “esta es una iniciativa que hemos impulsado desde nuestro gobierno para proteger a los trabajadores, para fortalecer el trabajo de testeo que se ha realizado en la región, y así realizar una pesquisa oportuna de los casos positivos, que permita por un lado evitar brotes que pongan en riesgo la salud de las personas, y por otro darle más tranquilidad a las familias”, explicó. Trabajo en conjunto que resaltó el Director del Servicio de Salud de Atacama, Claudio Baeza. “En este importante periodo en nuestra región vamos a desarrollar un fundamental trabajo de prevención y control en beneficio de la salud de Atacama. Junto a la Seremi de Agricultura y a la Asociación de Productores y Exportadores Agrícolas del Valle de Copiapó realizaremos exámenes PCR a las personas durante las labores en verde y próxima de cosecha. One year ago today, Sept 1st, 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall on The Bahamas. The results were devastating. On this one year anniversary, my friend JT Hodges @hellojthodges decided to release a song called “Sandman” we’d written to help raise awareness to the ongoing struggle that the Abacos Islands and the Bahamian people still suffer. This song features a famous Bahamian local artist named Stumpy. I had the privilege of going to the Bahamas to record the song, video, Stumpy, and help with any relief efforts being made by a private organization who were the first on the ground after the storm hit called Team Ghosts @teamghostsabaco. Billions of tax-payer dollars will be directed towards a reactionary response to the pandemic: improving hospitals, hiring more health care professionals, PPE, medicine and vaccines... . . But revitalizing, nourishing and fortifying our bodies with real food? Healing with food? Improving diet in care homes and hospitals and schools? Building a food-secure, organically-based, decentralized food system? This clearly isnt a priority... . . Shouldnt we deal with the underlying issues that make this virus so deadly in the first place--diabetes, obesity, cancer and other illnesses typically associated with poor diet?.. . . But is diet, food-security and soil health a government issue in the first place? Maybe. What a ride it was last week as temps dipped below freezing at 3pm and a heavy snow blanketed the farm . We went to sleep wondering as the predicted lows ranged from the teens to the low twenties. We awoke in the morning a little afraid to look outside expecting to see a heavy frost leaving our seasons work devastated. To our surprise the temps had risen and were hovering at 33 with no damaging frost to be seen. The farm fared well with the warm earth giving the plants the ability to withstand some pretty serious cold. The only casualty was our “Best of Buttercup” culinary landrace winter squash that we harvested early with the fear of losing the crop completely looming in our minds. We figured the seed had matured but now realized it may have been a couple weeks early for much of the population. Nothing like losing a culinarily selected population with so much work due to a false weather warning! What did we learn?
