Photo by @eva.colomer The Lobi belong to an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. Starting around 1770, many Lobi peoples migrated into southern Burkina Faso and later into Côte dIvoire. The group consists of around 180,000 people.Lobiri is the name of the language spoken by the Lobi people. Lobi dwellings are characterized as large rectangular or polygonal compounds known as maison soukala. They are spaced well from each other and are composed of a single vast mud banco wall and a small entrance. An entrance to a Lobi house is a relatively recent development. At many houses, there is a ladder made from a large, Y-shaped tree trunk with notched steps, which lead up to the roof where inhabitants may access an interior granary and their own rooms below. Access to individual sleeping quarters is also available inside. Only the tyuordaarkuun (or head of the household; there is no chief in Lobi society) can give permission to enter the house. The roof is broad and flat and forms a terrace which provides a lookout point but can also be used for sleeping in the dry season. Domestic animals have their own space, and water is gathered from a well or the river. The rooms inside a Lobi house are very dark, and the size varies in relation to function. Each wife has a room for herself and her children where meals are prepared. Large earthenware jars used to hold water or other personal belongings are often stacked up against the kitchen walls and are a testament to the owners economic status. He came to #Uganda with 11 family members including his wife, Ayen, and is four children – Mach, Chol, Mangol and Abuk. They left Jonglei because there was violence. Soldiers were shooting people and their neighbours were fleeing and running away. They took a decision to move in just a day and then departed in the night. One of his children, 1 ½ year-old Alier, was killed as they left Bor town, and his uncle was killed in the same attack. They were living in fear, had no water and no food. They arrived in Uganda a month after departing Bor town. Il film ha accompagnato il libro ‘Never Stop’ - di mio padre - durante le sue mostre e i suoi incontri. Racconta la storia di Arouna, un ragazzo Senegalese arrivato in Sicilia con un gommone. Arouna aveva 21 anni e già da 4 si trovava in Sicilia. Ricordo molto bene questi momenti, gli avevamo chiesto se tornando indietro avesse mai rifatto il viaggio infernale verso la Sicilia: un mix di lacrime, rabbia e risate. When I arrived in my site in north-central Mozambique, I immediately searched for young folks to take part in a youth group. Little did I know, there was already a group of teen leaders in my town that were on the forefront of community education. When I found this group, I proposed that they become an official JUNTOS group. Pronounced [j’oo’n’toosh] in Portuguese, the acronym stands for Jovens Unidos no Trabalho dos Oportunidades e Sucesso and is an official Peace Corps Mozambique program that allows for leadership and networking opportunities for youth in nearly every province of Mozambique. . The collective leadership decided to work with me and about a year and a half later during a regular meetup with these young leaders, one of the members mentioned that she remembered seeing a video of me dancing Cuban Salsa with a group of college friends. As a first generation Cuban American, I learned “Casino de Rueda” when I attended university in order to honor my heritage. We spent the next few months practicing for countless hours a routine that would mesmerize the town. When the day finally came, at least a thousand people filled the plaza and watched us preform our best work of art to date. Lioness Siena from the Marsh Pride in the Maasai Mari was badly injured after a horn of a buffalo punctured her left lower flank. Safari guides saw her and called up rangers who alerted veterinarian Dr Njoroge from Kenya Wildlife Service. Him and his team treated Siena which took a little over an hour. Two days later she was spotted doing remarkably well, we hope she is able to continue to improve. I want equality in the community. I want to bring peace back to South Sudan. says Ferida Marmin, 21, Youth Activist and South Sudanese refugee in Uganda. She says, “I arrived in Bidi Bidi refugee camp alone in October 2016. My family and I had gotten separated when they fled fighting in South Sudan. I still do not know where they are. “People always say the conditions here are hard - you have to be strong. My will is to help bring the community together — that we bring peace. It is important to reduce tensions and reduce violence in the community in order to promote peace. Here, we come from different places in South Sudan — but here we need to be unified. This September, UN Security Council resolution 1325 is 20 years old. This resolution recognises that women should have a seat at the peace table. In fact, until recently, a Maasai boy would only be crowned a warrior if they killed a lion single-handedly using a spear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗗 ❱ This has probably been one of the most intriguing factS about the Maasai people. As strange as it may sound to some, the Maasai do in fact drink the raw blood of the cows and goats that they slaughter, which is their primary source of food. Martu Rangers have found Night Parrots in remote salt lake country in Western Australia! Congratulations to Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa’s Martu Rangers, @uniofqld, and the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions for their collaborative efforts that have resulted in this find. This is a wonderful example of two-way science where traditional knowledge and western science complement each other. Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa’s Martu ranger team have been using sound recorders and local knowledge to search for these elusive birds, and with assistance from experts from the University of Queensland, their two years of hard work paid off! This is the fifth confirmed location of the Night Parrot in Western Australia and adds to a growing body of knowledge about this cryptic species. The result will also inform the rangers’ ongoing management of the region. I’m very excited to hear of another place where Night Parrots are persisting, and I look forward to learning more about Night Parrots on Martu country. “My baby Bridget is four months old. I started this business three years ago. Its not a great business. Theres so much hard work. You have to cut the trees. They can easily fall on you, so there are many injuries. There are also a lot of snakes and scorpions out in the bush. So, when you do this you have to be very careful. The area where I work is about an hour away. We cut the wood there and also burn it at the same place. I am blind on eye and cannot see much from the other, so that makes it harder. I always need someone to help me. It takes about two weeks to make one bag of charcoal. I can sell a bag for 20K shillings ($5.40). Right now, I have three bags. I know this business may cause problems. If you cut trees, you need to replant also. There are so many problems caused from cutting trees. Trees provide wind breaks for our homes; without them the wind becomes too much. Land that doesnt have trees may also experience erosion and the topsoil can wash away. Eventually our land is becoming infertile. With no leaves to fall, there is no compost being made. Weve had many challenges in the last three years. The rain has not been reliable and were all farmers. But if you want to eat, you need to do something. Without this work, I dont have an income and I cant support my family. I would like to leave this business. Its difficult, since I always need help to do it. I would prefer to do something else. I’d like to get a grinding machine. My problem is capital. I dont have money to start the business. I also need money to go to Kampala to get an operation. They say my eyesight can be fixed.” Geoffrey, 20 years old. Burning of charcoal is a huge problem in Northern Uganda and people like Geoffrey are often well aware of the long-term consequences of what they are doing. The floods and muslide in Chesegon, West Pokot County in Kenya have had devastating effects. The community has lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The mudslide has left the community without water, and in unsanitary conditions heightening the communitys vulnerability to COVID-19.We, therefore, gave water cans and handwashing stations. Alongside the cans, we also gave water treatment chemicals to protect from water borne diseases. Women and adolescent girls have special needs that are often hard to meet during a crisis. Representation. Long before the movie I would look for Black images for my son. I didn’t allow him to watch much TV. We read a lot of books. He loved comic books. His favorites were Spider-Man and Black Panther. I told him the real Spider-Man was Black and Marvel had stolen the idea from Anansi the Spider stories. I made all his costumes for Harvest Day. I hated Halloween and he loved costumes. I made all of his costumes and of course they had to be Black (He was Muhammed Ali the year before this). I almost didn’t finish this costume as a punishment for something Kobie had done. I made the muscle chest, went to the Slauson Swap Meet and had the words Black Panther embroidered in gold on the back of the cape and downtown to buy the beads for the necklace. He also loved baseball. So we read about the Negro Leagues and unsung heroes like Satchel Paige. He knew about Jackie Robinson too. When the movies came out, each time I took a group of his friends to see them. Chadwick brought two things to big screen that he loved. Superheroes and Baseball (I couldn’t stop him from stealing bases after that movie). We met Chadwick early in his career (We lived in the same building). Chadwick was always polite, a gentleman. I saw him after the movie at a party, thanked him and congratulated him on his success. He replied, “thank you, how’s your son?” Needless to say, I finished the costume and Kobie continues to amaze me. We will continue to represent. #ભારત_નુ_નાનુ_આફ્રીકા ( જાંબુર - ગીર ) અફ્રો ઈંડિયન ગણાતા આ લોકો છેલ્લા બસ્સો વર્ષમાં પૂરા ભારતમાં ફેલાઈ ગયા છે . ભારતમાં આજે તેમની સંખ્યા 2,5000 હજારથી પણ વધારે છે . ગુજરાત , આંધ્રપ્રદેશ , દીવ , દમણ , ગોવા , કેરલા , કર્ણાટક અને મહારાષ્ટ્ર જેવા રાજ્યોના આદિવાસી વસાહતવાળા વિસ્તારોમાં આવા લોકો તમને સરળતાથી મળી જશે , ગુજરાતની જ વાત કરીએ તો અમદાવાદ , અમરેલી , જૂનાગઢ , જામનગર , રાજકોટ , ભાવનગર , ભરૂચ અને કચ્છ જિલ્લામાં પણ વિભાજીત રીતે આ પ્રજાતિ વસવાટ કરે છે . સ્વિડનની ઉપસલા યુનિવર્સિટીના પ્રોફેસર અબ્દુલાજિજ લોધીએ ‘ આફ્રિકન સેટલમેન્ટ ઑફ ઈન્ડિયા નામના પોતાના શોધ વિષયમાં આ પ્રજાતિઓ વિષે વિસ્તૃતમાં માહિતી આપી છે . તેમના અનુસાર આ પ્રજાતિ ભારતના મુસ્લિમ શાસક સૈયદ્ર માટે કામ કરતી હતી જે ઈથોપિયાથી હિન્દુસ્તાનમાં આવી હતી આ તમામ લોકો સુન્ની મુસ્લિમ છે . તેમાંથી અમુક લોકોએ હિન્દુ અને ઈસાઈ ધર્મનો અંગિકાર પણ કર્યો છે જે ક્રમશ , કર્ણાટક અને ગોવામાં વસવાટ કરે છે . ગુજરાતમાં તેમના આગમન વિષે એવું કહેવામાં આવે છે કે , આજથી બસ્સો વર્ષ પહેલા જૂનાગઢના નવાબે આ લોકોને પોતાના વતનમાં લઈને આવ્યાં હતાં એ સમયે જૂનાગઢના ગીરના જંગલોમાં સિંહ નો ખુબ જ આંતક હતો , અવારનવાર તે ગામમાં ઘુસીને ગ્રામજનોને ફાડી ખાતા હતાં ત્યારે કોઈએ નવાબને કહ્યું કે , સાઉથ આફ્રિકી લોકો સિંહને અંકુશમાં રાખવાનું સારી પેઠે જાણે છે . નવાબે એ વ્યક્તિની વાત માની લીધી અને આશરે દસ બાર લોકોને સાઉથ આફ્રિકાથી અહીં લાવવામાં આવ્યાં જેઓની સંખ્યા આજે બે લાખના આંકડાને વટાવી ચૂકી છે . બીજી તરફ એવી પણ લોકવાયકા છે કે , આ પ્રજાતિને ભારતમાં એટલા માટે લાવવામાં આવી જેથી તે એક યૌદ્ધા બનીને નવાબો અને સુલ્તાનોની મુસ્લિમ સેનામાં શામેલ થઈ શકે અને હિન્દુ રાજાઓથી પોતાના રાજ્યની રક્ષા કરી શકે કેટલાક સિદ્ધીઓને મુસ્લિમ નવાબો અને સુલ્તાનોની અદાલતોમાં વિશેષ નૌકરોના રૂપમાં ભારત લાવવામાં આવ્યાં , જ્યારે કેટલાક લોકોને ભારતીય વ્યાપારીઓ આફ્રિકાથી સ્વદેશ પરત ફરતી વેળાએ સેવક તરીકે પોતાની સાથે લઈ આવ્યાં , જાંબુરમાં વસનારા સિદ્દી બાદશાહ મૂળ નાઈજીરિયાના કાનો પ્રાંતમાં વાયા સુદાન અને મક્કાની હજ યાત્રા દરમિયાન અહીં આવીને સ્થાયી ગયાં તેમના નેતાનું નામ બાબા ગૌર હતું જે ખુબ જ ધનિક વ્યક્તિ હતો , તેણે ગુજરાતના ભરૂચ અને ખંભાતમાં અકિક ( એક કિમતી પથ્થર ) નો વેપાર શરૂ કર્યો , ધીરે - ધીરે આ હબસી લોકો વધવા લાગ્યાં આજે એકલા જાંબૂરમાં આવા આશરે બે થી અઢી હજાર લોકો રહે છે . જે મુખ્યત્વે ખેતાની વ્યવસાય સાથે જોડાયેલા છે કેટલાક સિદી બાદશાહ નજીકના ગીરના જંગલોમાં સ્થિત અભ્યાર - @gir.nationalpark on Instagram

Let me share my view: The key to take photos of remote communities is to spend time with them. I usually spend a week in a village before moving on. It gives me time to understand the people and the culture. I don’t take photos on the first days, I wait until I’m treated like a member of the community. Generally speaking, people can immediately feel if you come to understand them or just to make photos. You need to create a connection. Photography is based on respect and emotion. . Long-delayed general elections to find a successor to President Joseph Kabila in the DRC, were finally held on 30 December 2018. The run-up was marked by protests, street rallies, and clashes between opposition supporters and police. Elections had been repeatedly postponed since President Kabila’s mandate expired in 2016. The election was won by Felix Tshisekedi, leader of the UDPS, DRC’s largest opposition party. The result was disputed by rival parties, but welcomed internationally as the first peaceful transfer of power since Congo’s independence in 1960. The image by John Wessels (@johngingerwessels), Agence France-Presse was awarded second prize in the ‘General news, stories’ category of the 2019 World Press Photo Contest, and is part of the special exhibition ‘People, Power: Documenting protest since 1957.’ In collaboration with @UNESCO, @unesconow and @minbz, the exhibition presents images that have become global symbols of people power and celebrates the work of professional photographers who are showing us the stories that matter. ◾LAST WATER Climate change has been identified as a risk factor for human rights and is a drama that is pushing many ethnicities to the brink of an abyss and they risk disappearing forever. The connection between climate change and human rights is paying increasing attention to the unequal effects that are occurring in various areas of the world. Countries with tropical and subtropical climates, such as Africa, are expected to be the most affected and devastated. Turkana County, Kenya, is a tangible example. Between 1967 and 2012, in this region, average temperatures increased by 2 - 3 degrees Celsius, with an average of 45 degrees for at least five months a year. Thousands of dead animals emerge from the arid sands of what were once pastures and rivers. Thousands are the shepherds who have had to adapt, moving on the shores of the homonymous lake, becoming fishermen. In Turkana people fight and die for a last drop of water. Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid guest posting here for @everydayextinction showing some new work from Kenya looking at community based conservation and our relationship with the wildlife, and ecosystem that supports it. I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. A community on the front lines of conservation Mola community members are picking up the mantle of wildlife defenders as Lion Guardians. Not only does this increase employment in the area and individuals’ ability to support their families, but by having the knowledge to protect livestock, the community is joining the fight for conservation. Monitoring predator movement and building mobile lion-proof bomas is effective in reducing attacks on the people’s cattle as well as making fertile grounds for increased crop yields and thus food security. Community members are proud to be making progress and protecting wildlife.
