The future of this island nation isnt that bright 🌊 ⠀⠀⠀ The Republic of Kiribati is an independent island nation consisting of some 33 atolls near the equator in the central Pacific. The islands are spread over approximately 3.5 million sq km of ocean, but with a total land area of only 800 sq km. ⠀⠀⠀ Tarawa Atoll, pictured here, lies approximately halfway between Hawaii and Australia. Tarawa consists of a large lagoon fringed by a V-shaped reef, around 35 km long, and is made up of more than 30 islets. Tarawa, the site of a brutal World War II battle, is divided into North and South Tarawa. ⠀⠀⠀ South Tarawa, is made up of a thin, string of islets joined by causeways and is home to more than half of Kiribati’s 100 000 citizens. ⠀⠀⠀ Kiribati is one of the lowest-lying nations in the world, with many of the country’s atolls and coral islands rising no higher than 2 m above sea level – making them extremely vulnerable to sea level rise. Kiribati has already seen growing damage from storms and flooding. In 1999, two of the nation’s unpopulated islets, Tebua Tarawa and Abanuea, disappeared underwater entirely. ⠀⠀⠀ Global mean sea level is likely to rise between 0.29 m and 1.1 m by the end of this century. While this may not sound like a lot, small island nations, including Kiribati, will face particularly devastating consequences. ⠀⠀⠀ Small changes in sea-level rise will not only cause flooding, erosion, soil contamination and coral degradation, but will ultimately shrink more of Kiribati’s land area – displacing many of its inhabitants. ⠀⠀⠀ It is vital that over the coming decades, the changing height of Earth’s sea surface continues to be closely monitored. Set to launch in November, the Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will accurately measure changes in global sea level. Surfers can be pretty disconnected from the history of the places we recreate. We often think of the “locals” as the rich white dudes born into families that own coastal property and have easy access to a particular surf spot. But the real locals, the original locals, are of course the indigenous people who recreated along those same coasts for thousands of years before white colonizers showed up, stole their land and pushed their communities inland. To shed some light on the indigenous history of iconic surf zones, we’re launching a column called “Whose Coast Are You Surfing?” on Surfer.com, starting with the Kumeyaay Nation’s deep San Diego roots. Blue Hole é um dos maiores buracos azuis do mundo. Fica localizado há quase 70 quilômetros mar adentro da Cidade do Belize. Com forma de um círculo perfeito, tem pouco mais de 300 metros de largura e atinge 124 metros de profundidade. Essa imensa cratera ficou mundialmente conhecida quando o mergulhador francês Jacques Cousteau declarou tratar-se de “um dos 10 melhores pontos de mergulho no mundo”. E não foi à toa! Com suas águas mornas e transparentes, somado à formação diversidade de vida marinha, o Great Blue Hole passou a figurar na bucket list da maioria dos mergulhadores recreacionais. O barco parte de Caye Caulker logo cedo às 6:00 da manhã, e retorna às 6:00 da tarde. A saída compreende 3 mergulhos, em 3 pontos diferentes. - Submerged wreck of German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. She survived both Operation Crossroads nuclear tests in August 1946. She was towed to Kwajalein Atoll with a small leak. By December 21st she was listing severely and she capsized/sank December 22nd 1946.
