The Bridge on the River Choluteca By Prakash Iyer Have you heard of the Choluteca Bridge? I hadn’t either, until not so long ago. It’s a 484-metre-long bridge over the river Choluteca in Honduras, in Central America. A region notorious for storms and hurricanes. So when they decided to build a new bridge over river Choluteca in 1996, they wanted to ensure it would withstand the extreme weather conditions. A Japanese firm was contracted and they built a solid bridge, designed to withstand the powerful forces of nature. The new Choluteca bridge - a modern-day marvel of design and engineering was thrown open to the public in 1998. And as people drove from one side of the Choluteca river to the other, they couldn’t help but admire the new bridge. It was Choluteca’s pride and joy. And in October that year, Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras. There was 75 inches of rain in four days – the equivalent of what they receive in six months. There was devastation all around. The river Choluteca swelled and flooded the entire region. 7000 people lost their lives. All the bridges in Honduras were destroyed. All, except one. The new Choluteca bridge remained unaffected. But there was a problem. While the bridge was intact, the road leading to it and the road leaving it were both swept away. Leaving no sign that there was once a road there. And that’s not all. The flooding forced the river Choluteca to change course. It created a new channel, and the river now flowed beside the bridge. Not under, but beside the bridge. So while the bridge was strong enough to survive the hurricane, it became a bridge over nothing. A bridge to nowhere. It happened 22 years ago. But the lesson from the Choluteca bridge is more relevant to us today than ever before. The world is changing in ways we may have never imagined. And the Choluteca Bridge is a terrific metaphor for what can happen to us – our careers, our businesses, our lives – as the world around us gets transformed. Adapt to change. Or else. I took this photo on the second day of my recent backpacking trip to the canyons of Southern Utah. Several miles up this particular canyon, I reached an area that was partially obstructed by some large boulders. At the base of these boulders was a small section of dried and curled mud. This photo is a prime example of why I love reflected light. The harsh morning sun reflected off a nearby orange sandstone boulder, illuminating the upper right portion of the mud. As the mud sloped away from that boulder, it caught the blue light reflected from the sky above. Because of the angle of the mud, the light transitions from warm to cool. As photographers, we’re constantly surrounded by potential subjects. The ability to recognize their potential is entirely up to us. I should also add that this photo was taken only 10 feet from where I shot a different photo 2 years prior, a closeup of a lightning-bolt-shaped fracture low on an orange sandstone wall. That’s why I love returning to familiar locations and seeing how things have changed. This photo was taken with my @intrepidcamera 8x10 mkII using a Fujinon C 300mm f/8 on @fujifilm_profilm Velvia 50 8x10 film. ••• Last summer, Europe 40 Under 40 Award winning practice @melikealtinisik proposed an installation called Achrome[scape] at ‘To be Concrete’ Architecture Summer School by Betonart. Achrome[scape] is redefining the concrete as a material, which reveals the natural power of concrete and invites us to rethink the underestimated hidden beauty of concrete. Achrome describes an empty space with non-linear and colorless. The color of the Achrome is nature and the material is concrete. In Latin, morphê stands for “form” and ”genesis” means “formation”. The formation process of the design involves a holistic diversification from micro-macro to different-scale material types and to the settlement organization of units. A total of 158 units, all of which are made of a single white cell concrete, are based on various forms of the formation to make the boundaries pass across. To create a design that was dissolved in the soil, which was born out of the soil and approached to the smoothness of the sky, the material was transformed into the art of existence by using thinner aggregated concrete. The designer @melikealtinisik describes her installation; “Concrete is the perfect material for studying the design of nature itself to the corresponding rollback step by step towards nature.
