It seems the old Dover Castle Hotel building in North Adelaide is for sale. I wonder if the fact that it was once a common gaming house adds to its allure? :-) https://www.flickr.com/photos/state_library_south_australia/19074318795 Fined £25 for Having Occupied Gaming House James Henry Burrows, husband of the licensee of the Dover Castle Hotel, North Adelaide, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Police Court today to having been the occupier of a common gaming house on October 5. He was fined £25 with 15/ costs by Mr. Sabine. P.M. Mr. R. A. Lenthall, who prosecuted, said that betting slips were found by Constables Ryan, Russell, Flint, and Barrington in a bathheater. Mr. Lenthall said that Burrows was convicted in 1930 of having been at the same hotel for the purpose of betting, and was fined £50. Mr. C. J. Philcox, who represented defendant, said that his client was not a bookmaker, but was acting as an agent for one. For #MuseumMonday we share a photo from opening day of Seaforth School in 1922, courtesy of the City of Burnaby Archives. The one room school served 20 students. In 1983, the historic building was moved from its original location at 7881 Government Road to the Burnaby Village Museum and in April 1987 the school was opened to the public as part of the Museum’s permanent exhibition. During your visit to the Museum, check out the school and chat with the school teacher. The Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am-4:30pm. Admission is free. Please note the carousel and gift shop are closed. More info at burnabyvillagemuseum.ca - @burnabyvillage on Instagram

This is a photo of the Ethanac Cash Store in the Ethanac community, which was named for Ethan Alan Chase a citrus grower in the area. Later the name was changed to Romoland to accurately reflect its proximity to the Ramola Farms community. A small sign shows it was also the post office and perhaps the small sign on the left is for a telegraph office, since the Menifee Siding was nearby at the railroad tracks. #menifeehistory - @menifeehistory on Instagram

Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. Bush, and travelers and locals alike stroll in to savor their sugary (and sugar-free) delights. Open Mon-Sat. Contrary to popular opinion I have always enjoyed the brutal nature of a US Open test as a player. It was the one week of the year that you knew that golf would definitely win and yes, on occasion, you would turn inward to question the fairness of what you had just witnessed... but golf, with all of its variables and reliance on what a ball that is no longer within our control will decide to do on landing on a rough, uneven surface, hundreds of yards away from us in pursuit of a 4 and a half inch hole in the ground only helps me make peace with the fact that golf, much like life wasn’t designed to be fair.. it is a game if chance and possibility which is all part of its majesty.. Work hard and do all you can to enhance your chances of success, but win the war in your mind with what you think you deserve versus what you actually get... it’s a battle that usually finds the most worthy @usopengolf champion each year and I think that it may do that again this time too and fitting that it will be in the shadow of a city built on grit and determination. The rollercoaster of emotions and battle against the other players, the course and most of all oneself, is why I fell in love with this Championship in my first outing in ‘05, why a cherish my fondest day of my career, in contention and alongside Tiger in round 3 at Oakmont in 07 and why as I head to @skysports to help tell the story today as a broadcaster, I still love this great championship and all that it stands for. Enjoy the coverage of round 3 folks, see you on @skysportsgolf at 2pm ❤️ . . . . . 📷 @gettysport #USOpen #usopengolf #golf #majorchampionship #skysports - @nickdougherty5 on Instagram

Tampas Clara Frye Hospital, 1928, closed and was torn down in the mid-60s. It was the only hospital that African Americans could go! Tampa General would reject Black People. It was devoted exclusively to African-Americans until others had to admit them, the result of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was located east of North Boulevard, south of the Holtsinger Bridge over the Hillsborough River. Thats downtown Tampa in the distant background. A much larger Blake High School is now on that site. - @realtampa on Instagram
Who was Cyrus Peirce and why is there a school named for him? He was not a Nantucketer, although he is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery next to his island-born wife Harriet Coffin. Peirce, born in Waltham, came to the island after graduating from Harvard in 1810. Peirce took a teaching job only to earn enough money to return to Harvard to study for the ministry; he had no intention of remaining a teacher. After two years on the island, Peirce returned to Harvard and qualified for the ministry. However, after three years of study, the twenty-six-year-old, he returned to Nantucket and married twenty-two-year-old Harriet Coffin. In 1831, they opened their second school on island, noted for its progressive approach. Peirce offered free night classes, open to sailors, black, white, foreign and native born, who had not had the opportunity of an education. They hired sixteen-year old Maria Mitchell as an assistant. Their school became so well-known that Horace Mann, the first Secretary of Education in Massachusetts, observed the school and recruited Cyrus to serve on a state-wide committee to examine school libraries. Peirce became an active member of the island community. He and Harriet were among the founders of Nantucket’s Anti-Slavery Society and life-long champions of civil rights. They joined the Second Congregational Church which had become Unitarian. Cyrus was the president of the Education Society; its mission was to persuade Nantucket to fund a public high school. THEN (1831) & NOW (2020) While you’re out on your Sunday walk, swing by 45 St. Paul Street, the original location of Collingwood’s first railway depot, currently the Town’s Museum. Here’s a few dates of interest: - original railway depot was built in 1855, destroyed by fire in around 1864 - a new brick station with the square tower was erected in 1874, also damaged by fire in 1932. - the current building, erected in 1997, is a simplified replica of the 1874 building.
