(PART 1 of a two part post) After watching last nightโs embarrassing, cringeworthy debate between the two evils in competition to be president of this country I canโt help but think about my immigration story of assimilating and becoming a citizen of the United States. . Back in Guyana my father had his own dredge in the gold mines & caught malaria. He had to come to America for treatment or he would have died. A few months later my mom and I followed him here. My mom leaving a high paying position at the bank of Guyana where she helped build alliances with the world bank and other boarding countries. We touched down in Brooklyn, New York when I was 4 years old. The melting pot for immigrants especially those from the Caribbean. . My parents later divorced when I was the age of 8 and although they had their differences deep down I knew the realities , stresses and pressures of being immigrants in this country took a toll on their relationship. My mom cleaned toilets for the khazars (jewISH), my father worked on sky scrapers building some of the tallest buildings in the city. Was this the American Dream? Was this the propaganda that most believe? Were we bamboozled? Hoodwinked? Into believing life here would be better? . My father later remarried & my mother allowed him & his wife to file for me to get my greencard. If they didnโt I would not have been able to go to college when I got older or take part in other opportunities my peers were afforded. Hence why the DREAM ACT that Obama passed was so important! (Immigrant children who come here with their families and this country is all they know should not have to suffer because of it. ) This is also why so many people resort to โmarriageโ like we see on 90 day fiancรฉ. Lol . At the age of 21 I studied over 100 questions of American history that most who are born here donโt even know the answers to and was ONLY quizzed on 5 of them to take the citizenship exam. I passed and became a citizen of this country. Guess what this upcoming week is....my grand opening!! Iโm so excited (nervous) I donโt know what to do! I guess this is as good a time as any to reintroduce myself: My name is Janese Laster and Iโm originally from Birmingham, Alabama... yep, Iโm southern! I graduated from Spelman College and totally thought I would go to Med school and become a psychiatrist. However during medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch I fell in love with Internal Medicine and procedures. I then completed both my Residency and Gastroenterology training at Georgetown University Hospital in DC. During training I started to notice that medicine as a field was uber focused on treating secondary disease processes (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, GERD, fatty liver, constipation) but not the primary problem... excess weight! There really isnโt a focus of dedicated nutrition curriculum in western medical education. I also still loved procedures and wanted to find a way to have it all! I rotated at Brigham with a major innovator in bariatric endoscopy, Dr Christopher Thompson, and was later accepted into the competitive Nestle clinical nutrition fellowship. I took three boards in a year: Gastroenterology, Obesity Medicine, and Nutrition to become quadruple boarded! ๐ฉ๐ฅณ Then got the once in a lifetime opportunity to train with another giant in Madrid, Spain, Dr Gontrand Lopez-Nava with one of the most robust bariatric units Iโve ever witnessed! With all of my training, I decided it was time to create my mark and treat patients in a way I knew would truly help them. Then my practice, Gut Theory Total Digestive Care was born. So many stars have aligned to assure me I was on the right path and urge me to keep going. I canโt thank all of those who have offered me a kind word, motivation, and advice enough! I was diagnosed in Aug 2016 with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I went through sixteen rounds of chemotherapy, had a double mastectomy and 21 lymph nodes removed from under my arm. I was stage three. I was in remission for approximately a little over a year when I was told that it had returned. I am currently in the fight again. I have completed fourteen rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and now radiation. This journey was one I thought I would never be on. Cancer happens to other people, not me right? Wrong! Not going to lie, the diagnosis scared me at first but once I got through the initial fear, I realized that I am about to enter the fight for my life. So I fight. I am winning and I will continue to beat this nasty disease. No matter what I face, I realize that God goes before me and He is paving the way to my victory. My family and my faith filled friends have kept me in this fight. My pain is not for me, but to inspire someone else to remain in the fight. In some ways I am thankful that I have had this experience because I see beauty wherever I go. I refuse to allow unnecessary drama in my life anymore. Life is precious and I no longer take it for granted. I live my life everyday with purpose in mind. The scars I have are reminders of how I have continued to kick cancerโs tail and will continue to kick cancerโs tail. I want to be the miracle โ the beacon of hope for others to see so they will kick cancerโs tail. I refuse to stop living. I live my life I believe more so now than I did before. Never stop! Why dont I do bookings and consultations via text and DM? Because I will absolutely lose track of them. Any of my friends will tell you that Im usually holding my phone and if I am, I reply to messages when I see them. However, if Im not I can take hours to reply, and thats only if I dont get distracted by something else after I open the message to reply. Imagine if you asked me to book your appointment via DM and I forgot. Thats trash customer service on my part. I field all inquires via email because (as many of you know I have a corporate background therefore) I *always* check and respond to email. It may not be immediate but it is always within 24 hours, usually less. This is my preferred method to receive photos and discuss your questions because it keeps a record that I can always come back to. When it comes to appointments, Im all about keeping it simple so online booking is best.
