It was this old rusty Nissan truck. Got it at an auto auction on the west side for next to nothing. I remember getting pulled over and talking my way out of the no insurance and registration ticket. Drove straight home and painted the truck with some blue house paint. Rolled it out. Looked like shit but it even fooled some of my friends. I didn’t have money back then to get insurance, and to get it registered you needed a safety check. No way this thing was passing one of those. Safety stickers were easy to find though. Plenty rental cars down at the bay. One guy on lookout, a razor blade and some wax paper. It wasn’t two weeks later I ran out of gas rounding Waimea. Right there on the right headed towards foodland when that small little pullout was there. Before the landslide. Good spot to check the waves fast kine but shitty spot to run out of gas. Gaurans a ticket this time if the cop drove by so I had to at least get it to the church parking lot. Frantic, I searched the truck and don’t ask me why but for some reason I had a nearly full bottle of Jack Daniels in the truck. I emptied it in the gas tank. Where I heard that might work, don’t ask. I think it was @surfnavarro first winter on the north shore. In his teens. Early 2000’s. I remember he was in the back with some other guys all freaked out. I told um to get out and push. The truck sputtered and with their help pushing between loud explosion noises we got it around the corner into the church lot. Safe. This was the same winter as this spread in @surfer_magazine My first one. Unidentified. I think @sean_davey took it. Riding a singlefin @captain_freed and I shaped right there at three tables. I gave it some Halloween colors. Must have been October. My first custom gun. Two wave hold down on that thing. Good times. - @deepwatersurf on Instagram

We’ve been quietly working away this summer and balancing a turbulent ocean! 😊A CHECK IN for all you lovely sea dwells on where we’re headed! ❤️ Two project launches will be happening in the next 2 weeks, and I’ve been trying to reflect on why I started this passion project. I wrote this in 2017 & it’s been on the Sea Together website since: “I created this project with many goals in mind—I wanted less of the butt shots and more surf culture about highlighting the diversity and creativity of women’s surf culture. …to learn more about the inspiring women surfers around the world in ways that I had not seen in mainstream surf media or even in a print magazine, and also to highlight and uncover voices not normally heard in mainstream surf media. …to create access to stories and voices through not only on social media and in print, but also in person. …to gather the waters of the sea together in support of each other, empowering each other, and encouraging that the differences that make us different can still come together, as the ocean is a place of uniting. I believe that the tides are changing and that there is a new generation of women surfers rising up to defy the previous standards set before them and to challenge hierarchical power structures within the media to collaborate with each other through positivity and creativity. I believe that all humans one day will be equal and will have equal representation in surf culture everywhere, and that it will be normal to see diversity represented. But, it will take us to get there. 3 years ago, we wrapped this film I star in called “A Shot Through the Wall”. It’s about a young Chinese-American cop who accidentally shoots and kills an innocent Black man, through a wall. It is a powerful story about ending police violence. It’s incredible how we finished shooting THREE YEARS AGO, and have its discussion be ever so relevant and crucial now. I am deeply proud to be a part of such an important message. And we can finally, finally, finally share it with the world!
