Hospitals in Haiti for the most part do not have incinerators to burn medical waste. Instead, infected materials are trucked to unsecured trash dumps putting entire communities at risk of infection. The poorest of the poor survive by picking through dumps in search of anything of value that they can sell. They also look for food that they eat and feed their families. Our ppl are resilient. This is the potlemys map Of Bengal. ✍Greek traveler and chronicler Megasthenes referred to Bengal as Gangaridai in his book Indica (300 BC). When Alexander invaded India and defeated Porus, he wanted to conquer all of India and moved eastward where he came to know about the mighty forces of the Gangaridai warriors. ✍Alexander read accounts of Gangetic Delta written by Ptolemy and Diodorus. ✍ Arguably, it was the might of the Gangaridai warriors that made Alexander retreat. This was the extraordinary information that I gave to all of you about Bengal for now.Lets prove that we Bengalis are great. . . . . I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Chican@s that paved the way. We honor their voices, their activism, their Love and continue to fight. La lucha sigue. ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽Established by the Brown Berets — a group akin to the Black Panther Party in dress and ideology — played a pivotal role in organizing residents of urban areas during the late 1960s and early ’70s. With a platform that centered the experiences of working-class Chican@s the Brown Berets rejected assimilation into European American society and stood against the Vietnam War and police brutality. They also demanded high-quality and culturally relevant bilingual education, helping lead massive walkouts at high schools on the Eastside. The Chicano Moratorium, was led by activists from local colleges and members of the Brown Berets, and high school students that staged walkouts in 1968, the coalition peaked with a August 29, 1970 march in East L.A that drew 30,000 demonstrators. The march was described by scholar Lorena Oropeza as one of the largest assemblages of Mexican Americans ever.It was the largest anti-war action taken by any single ethnic group in the USA. It was second in size only to the massive U.S. immigration reform protests of 2006. . . . . . . #latinx #chicano #chicana #chicanomoratorium #activism #chicanopower #organization #socialsctivism - @dianadiazlabel on Instagram

I know it may be difficult to celebrate during this time in our nation. With a botched or non existent national health policy and growing racial tensions, it may be a bit difficult to take pride in our own home. I pray that we take a moment today to reflect inwards and see how we can come together as a nation to overcome some of the biggest issues of our lifetimes. Muitos me perguntaram onde fica Maia. O Concelho do Porto, onde ficam as principais atrações. . . #portugal🇵🇹 #viajarparaportugal #feriasemportugal #amoportugal #consultoradeviagens #turismoemportugal #portugalsemfiltro #portugaldenorteasul #turismodeportugal #coisasdoportoPT #coisasdoporto🇵🇹 #porto #nortedeportugal #amar_porto #visitporto #visitportugal - @coisas_do_porto on Instagram

today marks a year since the Millions March in Sudan took place. after a 6 month period of peacefully protesting, where thousands were murdered at the hands of the government, after a deadly crackdown by security forces, the people took to the streets, during a full on internet black out and eventually ousted Omer Al Bashir, and were no doubt the catalysts for for the military to sign the civilian power sharing agreement. Today, they marched again - not only to commemorate the heroic lives lost, but to reiterate the demands for real reform and accountability - as promised by PM Hamdok and the transitional government. Woke up with a heavy heart, but also infuriated. commemoration is hard to reconcile when there is no real progress or change to track, a year later and the transitional government has met not one of the demands made by the people. It’s been hard to come to grips with that fact, in a real sort of denial, but also coming as no surprise, this is life long work. I never want to romanticize or sensationalize protest, I struggle with claiming perseverance these days too, who’s to say folks constantly want to act and resist, despite? That our tenacity is infinite? I wish so badly that the conditions weren’t so, that my people could be safe in their homes, or given the space + time to deal with living in a pandemic, take all the precautions and care, especially when the infrastructure of Sudan couldn’t possibly handle any sort of peak - but the revolution stops for no one (?). Images above are dispatches from home today, via my cousin Shahd. 3rd image is my auntie Fathia with her friends, the sign reads: “Sudanese Women’s Union June 30th Millions March Completing building authority systems Transitional Justice - Justice for the Martyrs Trials for the Perpetrators” These words resonate + reverberate immensely, lending to the real parallels, the indisputable fact that there’s an endless intersectionality in the fight for Black liberation + freedom worldwide. May we honor all Black lives lost in the pursuit of sovereignty. May all Black people heal, may all Black people see justice, may all Black people live full and prosperous lives that matter. - @niidal on Instagram

Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin was a member of the Metis Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, suffragist, attorney, Bureau of Indian Affairs clerk, officer for the Society of American Indians and Native American Rights activist. Baldwin was the first Native American to graduate from the Washington College of Law and was a key player in the women’s suffrage movement in Minnesota as well as the national stage. She used her role in the federal government as well as her legal expertise to advocate for Native women and their rights. She was also focused on working with the Society of American Indians to advocate and celebrate Native identity. Native Americans have had a complicated and dark relationship with The Bureau of Indian Affairs. At the start of her career Baldwin was an advocate for assimilation. This began to change when Baldwin became involved with the women’s suffrage movement, citing the need to advocate for the rights of Native women specifically. She met with women across America, testified in front of congress, marched with a group of female lawyers in the 1913 suffrage parade, and was part of the cohort that met President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Baldwin was focused on celebrating and advocating for Native culture and identity with her work for the Society of American Indians, speaking at the society’s first meeting in 1911 at The Ohio State University. Marie Bottineau Baldwin was a fearless, unrelenting, talented and pioneering leader and advocate for womens suffrage and Native womens rights. Her famous portrait, where she wore traditional dress, for the Office of Indian Affairs represents her mission to demonstrate the beauty, existence and validity of Native culture. Many women of color have been left out of the narrative of women’s suffrage, but Baldwin’s work should not be forgotten. Over 80% of what is the US today was still rightfully owned and occupied by hundreds of Indigenous communities with uncounted populations of over 750k - 1M+. By 1920, less than 2% of US land is occupied by Native Americans through reservations with a population of less than 250,000 nationwide. In one of the more painful parts of “Aunt Betty’s Story,” Bethany Luray describes becoming a mother for the first time and explains why she “would have been glad” if she and her newborn daughter had died in that moment. “My dear white lady,” she says, “ . . . you can never understand the slave mother’s emotions as she clasps her new-born child, and knows that a master’s word can at any moment take it from her embrace; and when, as was mine, that child is a girl, and from her own experience she sees its almost certain doom is to minister to the unbridled lust of the slave-owner.” The book is dated 1889. Some may see that as making it irrelevant to what is happening in the town today, but it provides context. It is part of Luray’s past. It is part of our nation’s past. Mayor Barry Presgraves claims to “now fully understand” how hurtful his actions were. But for any of us to do that when it comes to racism, we can’t just look inward. We also have to look backward. We have to understand the deepness of the wound that is being poked. #luraycaverns #luray #slavery #auntjemima #400years #racism #kamalaharris #enslaved - @theresaavargas on Instagram

This week were sharing excerpts from In That Rich Earth written by our Senior Historian, Brad Manera, with contributions by Craig Wilcox and Chris Clark. Exploring the 100 sites of military significance in our Hall of Service, In That Rich Earth tells the story of more than a century of Australian service in conflict and peacekeeping. Buy your copy at the link in our bio. From 1939 to 1945 Australia grew from being a nation unprepared for war to one whose population was mobilised for total war. More women joined Australias fighting forces than at any time before or since. 990,000 Australians served in the Second World War, out of a population of approximately 7 million. Wewak 1945 The last battle on the mainland of New Guinea was fought to eliminate the final remnants of General Adachi Hatazo’s 18th Army that had fallen back on the port town of Wewak. In April, Major General Horace “Red Robbie” Robertson had taken over command of the 6th Division from Alan Ramsay. Red Robbie’s plan was to land Australian commandos to the east of Wewak while the 19th Brigade advanced from the west. Overhead, the Japanese would be pounded by the Beaufort bombers of No. 71 Wing, supplemented by aircraft from No. 6 and No. 15 Squadrons. The Beauforts had played an integral part in the campaign along the north coast from Aitape. They dropped 1,236 tons of bombs in support of the army. The commandos encountered little opposition, but the 19th Brigade endured heavy fighting as they seized Wewak Point and the airfield. By 15 May the town was in Australian hands, but the survivors of Adachi’s army escaped into the mountains, where they would continue to fight until 15 August. Some chose to fight to the death, even after the surrender order, while others crawled into the jungle and starved. The Wewak soil in the Hall of Service was collected from beside the Bastiaan Plaque at the Cape Wom War Memorial, 5 May 2018. Image 2: Wewak, PNG. Courtesy Google Earth. I’ve had a complicated relationship with beauty since I was about 9, maybe even younger. It’s made me feel bad and it’s made me feel good. It hasn’t been until relatively recently that I realized that it should only make you feel good. Everything else is construct. Beauty has been weaponized for various motives but perhaps the pandemic is letting us get back to its original purpose. I’m discussing this at the Beauty x Pandemic panel tomorrow at 11am EST. Progressive friends, I’m going to say this clearly: FIGHTING ANTISEMITISM IN YOUR POLITICAL CIRCLES DOESN’T MAKE YOU A BAD PROGRESSIVE IT MAKES YOU A GOOD PERSON 🗣🗣🗣 Which is more important?! — I reallllllly wanted the last one to be the last one but then I got some comments that made me realize I didn’t hit this hard enough. I don’t know who needs to hear this but the Democratic Party is not perfect. There is ALWAYS room for improvement. Also, this is NOT an endorsement of the right and definitely not of Trump, so Trump lovers don’t go there. I’ll happily turn comments off if that’s what this turns into. 💙 #jew #jewish #antisemitism #left #democrats #judaism #israel #aoc #ocasiocortez - @ilanawols on Instagram

- @toscana_orgoglio on Instagram

Amassing most of his wealth from gold and salt, King Mansa Musa from Mali remains the richest man in history, worth more than $400 billion dollars. Presently, thats more than twice Jeff Bezos worth -- who is currently the richest man on earth. Mansa Musa traveled thousands of miles during a spiritual exhibition to Mecca—gifting gold to thousands of people along on the way. In fact, it is said that Musas benevolent charity was largely responsible for a period of economic prosperity experienced by the city of Cairo for years after his reign. We cant talk about Emperor Mansa Musa without mentioning the legacy that he left behind. His contributions to the city of TImbuktu, including libraries, schools, and mosques, are to thank for the intellectuality that is commonly attributed to the city. - @_melaninmoney_ on Instagram

2020 marks 25 years of Getty Images, although the archives in our care trace a far longer history. Today, @gettyarchive explores the Sygma collection.⠀ ⠀ Leading the field in photojournalism for the best part of 30 years, French press agency Sygma was renowned for covering significant events & celebrity lives from across the globe. Established in 1973 in Paris by a group of former Gamma photographers, it would build on the archives of Hubert Henrotte, Jean-Pierre & Eliane Laffont, James Andanson, Alain Dejean, Alain Nogues, and Christian Simonpietri, their own handwritten inventories still looked after within the collection.⠀ Opening offices in Los Angeles & New York, Sygma’s prize-winning coverage would encompass conflicts & revolutions, royalty & leaders, and illuminating portraiture of sport & cultural icons.⠀ Having utilised emerging digital technologies since the late 1970s, the Sygma Preservation Project was launched in 2004, with a dedicated team deployed to catalogue, edit & scan the best assets of the collection. ⠀ Today, the Sygma archive represents 35 million glass plates, negatives, prints & slides stretching across 7km of filing space in a state-of-the-art facility. Fifty years of history as seen by more than 400 photographers, it is a powerful testimony to the last half of the 20th century.⠀ Note that our gallery includes upsetting images: a bride posing in Beirut after the Lebanese Civil War; Diana, Princess of Wales, in August 1997; a suspected member of the secret police is arrested in Lisbon during the Carnation Revolution; a man faces a Ku Klux Klan rally in Miami, 1983; Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev & East German President Erich Honecker kiss on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the GDR; David Bowie in 1977; the aftermath of the bombardment of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 1974; Donald Trump posing in the Trump Taj Mahal casino, 1990; the Paris riots of 1968, and Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Algeria, 1972.⠀ ⠀ 📷: Christine Spengler l Stephane Cardinale l Henri Bureau l Jean-Louis Atlan l Régis Bossu l Christian Simonpietri l Rick Maiman l Alain Nogues l Sygma/Getty Images l #GettyImages25 #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #Sygma - @gettyimages on Instagram

No Wave Feminism. This is so important to understand, and has been a huge driver for our work since the outset as something felt very missing from the narrative - as if through the waves of feminism we are realising equality for the very first time in history. Feminism has typically been taught, depicted, and centered on white women’s fight for change, through the 1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc) waves... This completely ignores and eradicates the long histories and deep traditions of equality for native peoples (found across the world). In fact, the Huadeno-saunee women shaped and influenced much of the earliest feminist movement in N America. Where prominent feminist Joslyn Gage became even adopted by the Mohawks. This is rarely mentioned. For Iroquoian women, the matrilineal societies of the Haudenosainnee, women owned the house, means of production and wielded considerable political influence. Women head the clans and, using consensus, nominate or ‘de-horn’/remove leaders from office. ‘The lives and experiences of Native American women still inform us of lives where politics and economics revolve around a centre of political gravity in hearth and home and people not denned as units of economic production and consumption. ... This world informs ours, where home and hearth often have been disintegrating under pressure from the world of work that claims everyone’s lives and women’s liberty is too often defined solely as limited access to a world designed by men. ... Daughters of Mother Earth reclaim their ancient responsibility to speak in council, to tell the truth, to guide the rising generations through spirit-spoken wisdom. ... Recovery of women’s traditions are an important theme here. Point of view matters in decolonization. One important point of view is our relationship with the Earth, our home, and with the Sky, whose sun is our sustenance.’ - words from Daughters of Mother Earth by Barbara Alice Mann. Artwork by @riseindigenous - ‘...feminism is actually an indigenous concept that has been co-opted by white women. (Cont’d in comments) - @soulseedgathering on Instagram

All hail the latest inductee to the Turn It Up! Hall of fame: Queen Latifah. In the pantheon of feminist provocations, the question Who you callin’ a bitch? ranks high. Confrontational rather than diplomatic, it identifies a gross injury and refuses it, casting scorn back from whence it came. This famed one-liner from the shape-shifting emcee Queen Latifah, from her 1993 anthem U.N.I.TY., remains a benchmark for the entertainer who, at various moments in her career, used hip-hop to confront popular rap caricatures of black women as bitches and hos. So says Dr. Shana L. Redmond in an excerpt from her essay on the pioneering rapper, singer, actor, and producer for Women Who Rock: Bessie to Beyonce. Girl Groups to Riot Grrrls. Shana is a founding member of Turn It Up! and author of Anthem: Social Movements and the Sound of Solidarity in the African Diaspora (2014) and Everything Man: The Form and Function of Paul Robeson (2020). She is Professor of Musicology and African American Studies at UCLA. Centro Legal de la Raza, in partnership with member organizations of the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice (CCIJ), has led efforts to identify how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operated in the Northern California Region since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020. The reports give the community greater insight into how ICEs blatant disregard for immigrant lives has directly resulted in the wide spread of COVID-19 at Mesa Verde Detention Facility in Bakersfield, CA. As ICE begins to open a 1,400-bed detention center, the data shows that this facility will become another hotspot of COVID-19 infections, like many others around the country, and will significantly impact communities throughout the state. The Himba tribe still respect and live according to the traditions of their ancestors. They are an ancient tribe located in Namibia, speak a language called Otjihimba and are about 20,000 to 50,000 people in population. The Himba people are a semi-nomadic people who breed cattle and goats.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The women tend to do more labor-intensive work such as carrying water to the village, building homes and milking cows. Whereas the men handle more of the political tasks and legal trials, which also make them the leaders.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Their homes are simple, cone-shaped structures bound together with palm leaves and mud. In the Himba culture a sign of wealth is the cattle you had owned during your lifetime, which is later on represented by the horns on your grave.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba women are famous for rubbing their bodies with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre (an iron-rich rock), believed to protect their skins against the harsh climate. The red mixture is said to symbolize earths rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba worship their ancestors and the god Mukuru. Often times, the ancestors act as Mukurus representatives. Their homes are surrounded by an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and their livestock, both are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship. The fire represents ancestral protection and the livestock allows for proper relations between human and ancestor. Each family has their own ancestral fire, which is kept by the fire-keeper, who attends to the ancestral fire every seven to eight days in order to communicate with Mukuru and the ancestors on behalf of the family 👦🏿👩🏾👩🏿🦱🧒🏽👧🏿⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ #africana #panafricanism⠀ #visitaftica #africatravel #unapologeticallyblack #proudlyafrican ❤️ #divinedarkskin #panafricanist #africanlife #weloveafrica #blackpeoplematter #africandiaspora #eastafrican #blackandproud #blackandproud✊🏾 #melanated #blackrevolution #blacknation #travelafrica #blackculturematters #himbatribe #namibia🇳🇦 - @africandiaries_ on Instagram

As a group that fights for environmental and social justice within travel, we cannot ignore the structural (institutional) racism black, indigenous and people of color face and have been facing for centuries. If we want to break down systems of injustice and oppression, to improve our travel industries, we must bring down racism with it. (Neo-)colonialism and racism play an undeniable role in the environmental and socio-economic issues in the travel industry. Racism, climate change and the unhealthy travel industry and culture are not standalone issues and we must stand up against them all! . #blacklivesmatter . “Populations from the Arabian Peninsula and the African continent have crossed, migrated, and mixed both within and outside the institution of slavery for thousands of years. In many places and communities, it would be difficult to even distinguish who is ‘African’ from who is ‘Arabian’.” At the LINK IN BIO, we take a deep dive into the often hidden histories of slavery, migration, and early nation building that have led to the complex positions of Black Arabs in the Gulf today, between inclusion, reconciliation, and discrimination. - @scenearabia on Instagram

NSNS and Rinse France announce end of CIRCA Season 1 radio show with and launch of final fundraiser round in support of LATAM artists CIRCA gives coordinates to locate something amidst a temporal flux in constant motion. We speak of a movement or a phenomenon CIRCA a specific timeframe, an approximation that helps us identify or circumscribe it. Thats the underlying principle of a project that essentially aims to provide an outlet for the wealth of music currently thriving in the Latin American territory as well as showcase the contingent of artists striving to make it happen in our day and time. As a first encounter, the initiative between Rinse France & NSNS Magazine showed the power of joining efforts towards one specific cause: gathering local music scenes from the LATAM region and nurturing a space where they could present themselves and their communities freely. In 9 weeks we invited different communities to curate between 4h and 6h their own program on @rinsefrance. All donations will go to the following groups equally: Juke MX (Mexico) Monopolar (Peru) Insurgentes (Colombia) Acaptcha (Brazil) Kenya 20hz/Anexo (Brazil) T.Friedlaender (Chile) Caustic System (Chile) Bluerojo23x (Mexico) Pervert (Mexico) La Gorila Rec (Mexico) Ediciones Danza Negra (Colombia) Endémico (Mexico, Berlin) Nawal Records (Mexico) S(GBA) Gabriele (Communication) - @nsns_magazine on Instagram
