I have officially registered to vote and will be voting early in the state of Nevada. Ill cast my ballot with the victims of this pandemic (both passed + left unemployed), racial injustice, and health of the earth in mind. I will think of my fellow Asian-American brothers and sister who have been violently attacked because of our administrations rhetoric. I will think of my mother and the other strong women who raised me. I will think of my Black friends and colleagues who cannot rely on those who are meant to protect us. I will think of the LGBTQ+ community--my second-family-- who rely on leaders who protect our rights so we may live our lives fully. I will think of the health of the ocean and the destruction of countless habitats and innocent animals due to climate change. I will think of my little sister who just began her life as a young adult and deserves a future where women arent held back by patriarchal beliefs and may excel. And, lastly, I will think of my late grandmother who always taught me to love unconditionally. Upholding her legacy, to me, means to fight for a future where people can live freely. It means to preserve the natural wonders of the earth so that the generations after me can love it as she did (her garden being a small testament to that). Beyond excited to share something I’ve been cooking up for a bit, an article for @officemagazinenyc on a photography program for local and refugee children in Turkey and Iraq, @sirkhanedarkroom I can’t describe what it does to my heart to see the talent and emotion in these photos from these children. Knowing that programs like Sirkhane Darkroom exist fills me with love and hope 💞🧿🥰 We had such a hard time choosing which photos to include in the article, let alone this post. People have asked me to out the person that sent the DM I shared on stories. I wont, heres why. I explained how they were wrong. I want them to have a chance to take it in. I like to give people room to grow and learn since I had to do a lot of that myself. Ill share something because I want to prove that racist thoughts and anti-blackness CAN be reversed. Ill also take this opportunity to admit that I unconsciously upheld this system for too long. ⠀⠀ Racism is so ingrained into our culture that it even leaks into black communities. My mom is white. My dad is black. Im a mixed kid but I look like my father. It took me most of my life to come to terms with that. Why? In my country being called black is one of the worst insults. Back home youre not black, youre Dominican. Were a diverse country but colorism is embedded into the very fabric of the island. Being lighter is being better. I grew up with family members repeating you cant marry black, you have to better the race. Sadly, thats a common belief in the DR. I grew up embarrassed of my curls because there hair is only defined in two categories: its pelo bueno or pelo malo. Your hair is literally either good or bad. I grew up hearing things that subconsciously made me hate how I looked. Its why as a kid Id get OFFENDED whenever I was told I looked like my dad. Id fight tooth and nail. Id say NO! I look like my mom!. I wanted to look like my white parent because that was better. Id call myself everything but black. I was mulatto, I was taina, I was indiecita, I was tan, I was chocolate, I was brown. I probably went through the entire thesaurus in two separate languages avoiding the one word that actually describes me. It took decades to reverse the damage the racism that permeates my country caused but I did it. The last few years have involved a lot of work and active unlearning of racist thoughts/tendencies. Each day I aim to deprogram all that garbage from my brain. Its why I dont hate the color of my skin anymore. ⠀⠀ Im Afro-Latina. Im a black Latina. I straddle those two identities proudly. Im black.
