This month, CMM celebrates its 50th Anniversary! To commemorate how far weve come, well be taking a look back at the museums history all month long. Today, were starting where it all began... The idea of a museum began as a shared vision of a group of local volunteers who recognized that the maritime heritage of their community needed to be preserved and celebrated. Supported by the Calvert County Historical Society, the museum committee met regularly, researched other maritime museums, sought advice from professionals in the museum field, and began collecting and preserving artifacts and archival items from the community. On October 18, 1969, the group broke ground for the 24 by 40-foot temporary museum structure on Solomons Island, between John Blusters Pier One Restaurant and the Solomons Post Office. One year from the groundbreaking, the museum was dedicated and officially opened to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 18, 1970. Present at the ceremony to open the museum were Joseph C. Lore Jr., president of the Calvert County Historical Society; William Dovel, volunteer curator of the museum; Jefferson Patterson, benefactor; and many volunteers and other supporters of the project. Volunteers operated and staffed the temporary museum, open to the public only on weekends. Admission was free, but donations were accepted. “How do I become a Commercial pilot?” This is a question I’m regularly asked, and until recently, I would reply by recommending the big name flying schools in the UK. However, this is probably poor advice, because I’ve heard many bad reports from unemployed pilots with huge debts. In the UK it costs in excess of £120K for a Commercial Pilots Licence and at the moment there’s no guarantee of work. Although I’m very optimistic that within 18 months to 2 years there will be another worldwide pilot shortage, I’m pretty sure that spending £120K is not the best way to do it. By chance I think I’ve found the best solution to qualifying as a Commercial Pilot, without breaking the bank, plus experiencing an amazing adventure at the same time. @slingpilotacademy at Torrance Zamerini Airfield, Los Angeles CA, has a growing fleet of new modern @sling_aircraft trainers, equipped with the most up to date modern avionics and instruments. I was recently invited by one of my Followers in LA, to see where he flies and I was completely blown away. @slingpilotacademy has created a perfectly professional, yet relaxed pilot training facility. It’s such a refreshing difference from the big corporate schools with their silly uniforms and old aircraft. Many flying schools are still training pilots in 40-50 year old Cessna and Piper aircraft with their dated cockpits and expensive fuel burns. Fuel equates to more than half the cost of flying training. The @sling_aircraft burns half the fuel of old training aircraft, with its modern fuel-efficient @flyrotax engine. Plus the cost of fuel in the US is half that of the UK/Europe. The time allocated to achieve a Commercial Licence in the UK or Europe is normally 18 months, yet @slingpilotacademy quote 9 months, because they can guarantee the Californian weather. And here’s the best part...... Their 9 month “Zero to Commercial” package is an incredible $65,595 (£51,469) less than half of the UK/Europe equivalent. On a clear, cool morning in West Texas, some 50 people are watching a helicopter wind its way around the south side of Elephant Mountain, a brown, flat-topped summit about 30 miles south of Alpine. The sun isn’t all the way up yet, but you can tell that the helicopter is hauling some unusual cargo.⠀ Dangling about 15 feet from the bottom of the helicopter are two desert bighorn sheep. It’s early, but they’ve already had quite a day. Capturing sheep by helicopter requires flying close enough to them to catch them in a net. Then a crew member called a mugger jumps out of the helicopter, blindfolds the sheep, and ties their legs together. Once the animals are immobilized, the mugger wraps them in a full-body sling, which is then attached to the cord dangling below the helicopter.⠀ From there, the sheep are flown to a drop-off point – today, it’s a barren patch at the base of Elephant Mountain. The helicopter’s blades kick up a thick haze as the pilot gingerly lowers the sheep to the ground.⠀ Desert bighorns are picky when it comes to habitat. But they’ve thrived on Elephant Mountain – a little too much, in fact. The most recent species census showed about 185 bighorns on the mountain, but there’s not enough food or space to support that many sheep. Thus, the helicopter – it’s part of a huge and complex operation by @texasparkswildlife to relocate some of Elephant Mountain’s bighorns. The department rarely does this, but it’s critical to the species’ long-term survival in Texas. The plan is to catch 74 of the sheep, gather as much data about them as they can, and then release them at Black Gap Wildlife Management Area, 50 miles to the southeast.⠀ “It’s helping the population here at Elephant Mountain by alleviating the browsing pressure, and helping…augment the population at Black Gap,” says Froylán Hernández, the desert bighorn sheep program leader for @texasparkswildlife.⠀ @juliareihs created these amazing photos while on assignment with our @marks.michael123. Oak Grove will provide pilots for the UH-60 aircraft fleet and will be responsible for the management and operations to ensure the program’s success. CIRG’s primary focus involves responding to critical incidents regarding counter terrorism and preventing weapons of mass destruction #wmd. FBI has an aviation division to support these missions with a fleet of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, including the Sikorsky UH-60M #blackhawk aircraft. The pilots are required to adhere to strict rotation to be able to provide 24 hours, 7 days/week, and 365 day-per-year response capability. Were honored to be selected by the FBI to provide this important role. These pilots are the best of the best, and it’s critical to manage all the details from their required training hours to their assigned missions. Under the CIRG program, pilots are required to be available to depart almost immediately once notified.
