It doesnt take long to teach a new hire how to rack and nail strip flooring to the floor. Once they grasp the concept theyre off and running. Herringbone is NOT like that. It takes years of experience and talent to take bundles of 4 white oak flooring, cut up and end groove into over 2000 precisely sized pieces, and install it over an existing plank subfloor, and have it look this good. Its no easy task and takes a ton of patience but the end results are worth it. The boys did a bang up job here for @vintagebuilders Im quite sure they appreciate it as well. Last Thursday morning, Jen and I went to take some exterior photos of our West Hills ADU project. It was surreal to take these shots with a newly neon yellow sky above from all these horrible wildfires, but we needed the photos, and don’t know when the sky will be blue again... Life must go on, as 2020 has so brutally shown us all. This is the back of the ADU; it cascades down the hilly site, towards the terrace. The client is wonderful and kind, welcoming us to take photos, and obviously has an AMAZINGly green thumb. It is so great to see the landscape take shape. One of the last progress shots, as we near the end of the Camp Hill project! This turn table was a first for us, and we honestly could not be happier with how it ‘turned’ out (pun completely intended) In the early stages, it was important to ensure we could get deep enough so as to allow for adequate draining under the house slab. Making sauce, for now and later. I turned around and saw this light shining into my kitchen where I had just washed dirt off those knobby tomatoes and pulled a pot off the rack to cook them down. And I wanted to capture this moment and feeling: that this sauce, like the hundreds of sauces I’ve made and every woman I’m descended from has made, like the sauce I’d wake up smelling on Sunday mornings as a kid that would make me happy because it meant people were coming over later; or the one I’d make for my own kid when I’d get home too damn late and tired from work and he was hungry and needed me. All the sauces were good, or good enough, and just what we needed. So I’m putting this one in the freezer, not sure of what we’ll need in a few months—so scared and uncertain about what we’ll all need. If you know me then you know I’ve been trying to master stair building. This is pretty much the only set I’ve ever built on my 40, and the largest set I’ve done. These are just the common stringers for our elliptical stair and they were built with lvl for added strength. Cutting the stringers was fun I stuck to the method of continuously cutting one direction and then coming back for the other. No Over Cuts so I cleaned up the notches with my jigsaw turned upside down. For the “kicker” down at the bottom I allowed for a pressure treated 2x4, and cut 3/4 off of the bottom of stringer to have a strip of Pt ply since we are landing on a basement slab. Pro tip like they always say buy an extra stringer incase of any mistakes I was a little excited and didn’t double check gauges but you know what I’m not ashamed I think It needed to happen so that it can never happen again lol you have to own your mistakes there’s nothing you can do wrong that someone hasn’t already done, it’s about being in the opportunity to make the mistake, can’t make the shot if you don’t take it!!!
