I first heard Toots and The Maytals “Pass The Pipe” LP while working at Rhino Records in the 80’s...songs like “Famine” and “Inside Outside” grabbed me instantly. Then came “Sweet and Dandy” from the Harder They Come soundtrack. Then I found a cool pressing of “Funky Kingston” on tour with Breakestra somewhere in Scandinavia and was once again blown away. Fast forward a few years and The Lions got to open for Toots & The Maytals at The Fillmore in San Francisco and I couldn’t believe how Toots sang with the mic about three feet away from his mouth and his voice carried all across that huge room. The man was like Otis Redding, he had so much power and so much soul. Anyway, we got to open for the man again two years ago at Reggae On The Mountain and I had to meet him so I asked my buddy Amit who throws the event and waited around til the end. When I finally made it into his trailer I was greeted with beautiful energy by a handful of ladies and Toots, exhausted after another amazing show. We chatted for a bit and he kindly signed a few of my LP’s. On “In The Dark” he wrote “Irie To You....Love, Toots” Thanks so much for spreading love your entire career Toots, irie to you. Pic 1: Fashion designer Dinah Adams and a friend model cult clothing to illustrate an article entitled “Cults” for the British soft porn magazine Men Only. Just some advice to the new, younger generation. First : don’t let ANYONE tell you YOU CAN’T !!! You can.. the world is yours. BUT Set your long term plans. Social media made it easier to get your message / business / ideas / product/ etc out there .. BUT everyone is doing shit for “likes” and “views”... no end goal. Want to be a musician ? Don’t give up your day job. The music industry is cluttered with talent(less) artists and there’s no guarantee you will make a career .. those days are over at becoming a solidified artist that can make living at music. The room is small and crowded . Not saying give it up but have a back up. Every major band before they broke ALL had day/night jobs .. just in case . But hearing kids say their career is “rapping” is cringe worthy . Sorry. So many artists that were popping 5 years ago don’t have two dimes to rub together . This is coming from someone who left his $250k a year job to pursue BP full time in 2000. Want to be an “influencer” ? Why ? Maybe 4-6 years ago .. but now ? Who are you influencing that your idols / peers already don’t ? The Kardashian / Jenner effect is a false flag . It’s a tightly devised long term plan .. name one thing that that whole family has done to warrant fame ? Other than the dad who won the olympics and later became a woman 🤷🏻♂️ Wanna be a skater ? OK .. go and skate .. push yourself to the limit. Get noticed for the RIGHT reason by the RIGHT people . Going to film some bullshit at the local skatepark is not doing anything for your career .. trust me. Some of the unsigned dope riders don’t have 10000’s of followers .. but 100000’s of views... they don’t care about that .. neither should you. The end goal : getting sponsored. Want to do a clothing brand .. ok. But have a plan .. have some designs .. then start off small and grow organically .. don’t try to go from 1 to 1000 overnight .. slow and steady wins the race. Invest with your friends in a long term business. I started Brooklyn House in 1992 with two friends / $4000 each / passion and drive . I’ve been here through bad and good for almost 30 years ..
