When I was 12 I snook out the house to see my boyfriend who was 12 at the time(it was daytime , noon to be exact). Before we left his mom said “Nesha , Make sure my boy get back home now“ . We went down the street to meet up with some other friends. There we were all gathered around , singing , rapping and most were just shooting ball. We heard the sirens and many started to break out , not because we were scared of them but because we knew our parents would have us on punishment all summer if the cops showed up at their house causing trouble, maybe even get disciplined. I remember hopping the fence with my boyfriend , we took the opposite way to avoid any heat, when the coast seemed clear we stopped and laughed. That was short lived because a cop car pulled us over and a white man jumped out the car and slammed my boyfriend face on the car without giving me a second glance , I knew I was tough but fear was eating at me. He was treating my boyfriend like a criminal , like an adult. I remember the cop calling my boyfriend a common thug , saying he knew where the fuck he was going . My boyfriend was fed up and started calling the cop a pig telling him he didn’t give a fuck and I saw the fear in the cop eyes as my 12 year old boyfriend who was just as tall as him started to resist. I thought about his mom and started to cry having panic attacks pulling on the cop. When the cop turned I told him that he was my brother , my mom had cancer and she was dying soon and if he went to jail he wouldn’t be able to say goodbye. They both stared at me , both in disbelief for different reasons ... he shoved him towards me and told him he was lucky to have a fine sister. When he left we didn’t speak for a while. I was always tough and I hated that I had to practically beg the white man to not do anything crazy like kill my best friend. Death at that age was common. 2014. I got in the back seat. My first instinct was to check if the door opened again from the inside. He was talking to me from the drivers seat but, I couldnt hear him. Fear was roaring in my ears and clouding my mind, blinding me even. The door. Was not. Opening. Locked. It was locked. The door was locked. Again. I was in trouble again. It was happening. He was going to rape me. The door was locked. My heart was beating in my mouth and tears were stinging my eyes so bad. They were running away with my imagination as I tried and tried to open that damn door! I could not breathe. I had to get out. I was struggling. Affliction will not.. I couldnt complete it. There was no space for it. The man reached over from the drivers seat to help and I turned on him. I attacked him with everything in me. I screamed. My throat was getting sore, but I kept screaming. And crying. I was hitting him, and hitting him, and screaming, and crying. So, he got out of the car. He ran to my side and threw the door open. I fell out of the car as the cool evening breeze swept in and over me like freedom. I was on the side walk, gasping for air, bags, sweater, pashmina and all. He didnt leave. He stood there. He waited. And then he crouched down and asked if I was ok now. I looked at him. His eyes were so concerned and kind. And weirdly, his eyes understood. I nodded. He explained that the door handle was bad. The child lock on it was stuck. He had been trying to tell me to wind down so I could grip the door handle from outside. He had tried to wind down the window for me when he reached over, but then I had gone wild. I could sit in the front seat, if that would make me feel better. I nodded again. He helped me up. And I got in. It was a silent journey till we got to choir practice. He gave me his number, just in case I found myself standing on the side of the road in VI again, in need of a cab. I got in for rehearsals. But it was the wrong venue. Guess who I called? There was still good in Lagos. There were good people. And God was keeping me. More to come.
