The Columbian exchange of crops affected both the Old World and the New. Amerindian crops that have crossed oceans—for example, maize to China and the white potato to Ireland—have been stimulants to population growth in the Old World. The latter’s crops and livestock have had much the same effect in the Americas—for example, wheat in Kansas and the Pampa, and beef cattle in Texas and Brazil. The New World’s great contribution to the Old is in crop plants. Maize, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, various squashes, chiles, and manioc have become essentials in the diets of hundreds of millions of Europeans, Africans, and Asians. Their influence on Old World peoples, like that of wheat and rice on New World peoples, goes far to explain the global population explosion of the past three centuries. Здравствуйте, дорогие наши! Благотворительность - это тяжкий труд. Мы, как никто, понимаем это. Тяжкий, неблагодарный и не всегда оплачиваемый. Всем волонтерам нужно поставить памятник, не меньше. Зачастую над сборами средств работают целые команды профессионалов с медиапланами. Деятельность этих людей невозможно переоценить, ведь они помогают тем, кто очень нуждается в помощи. Но так бывает не всегда. Когда мы заключили договор с нашим первым фондом Сбереги жизнь @fond_sberegi_zhizn , его директор Дмитрий сразу сказал нам следующее: Фонд молодой, команды нет, но помогают всем смайликам, так как хотят стать большим и известным фондом. Чтобы помогать ещё больше детям. Поэтому никаких комиссий! Но и работы тоже особо никакой. Но ведь известно, что родители смайликов очень активные и сами все успешно собирают. В принципе, нас это устроило. Фонд нам был необходим. Действительно, никакой работы фонд не вел, только ставил печати на написанных нами письмах и отправлял нам сканы, а мы с волонтерами рассылали их самостоятельно организациям. А когда Вова узнал, что с смс платежей до фонда из каждых 100 рублей доходит только 80, то нашёл для фонда другого оператора СМС с гораздо меньшей комиссией, и организовал переоформление на этого оператора. В начале сентября мы с ликованием объявляли всем о закрытии сбора, потом было третье введение Спинразы, а после него мы занялись подготовкой к покупке Zolgensma. Написали письма в наши фонды, Кораблик, и Сбереги жизнь о закрытии сбора, с просьбой перевода всех средств на Географию добра (т.к. ГД была выбрана Волшебником для пожертвования и они же в силу своего опыта будут закупать препарат). Кораблик перевел сразу же. Сбереги жизнь выдержали паузу... ...и объявили нам о расторжении договора.... Директор фонда Дмитрий сказал Вове, что позвонит некий юрист и обговорит с нами все нюансы. Через некоторое время позвонил юрист, мужчина, представившись также Дмитрием, пояснил нам, что мы нарушили один из пунктов договора и за это наказаны расторжением договора и замораживанием средств в фонде. LEGO THE MANDALORIAN SORGAN AT-ST BATTLE MOC Hey guys this is my second part of @themandaloriancollab And this build was very tough to make indeed, the elevations, the trees, the freeform itself all proved to be difficult. Then I built the AT ST moc made by golplayswithlego on Flickr. There are free instructions on rebrickable but I customized his version to make it look like the mandalorian one. The moc itself showcases the end of the forest part which slowly transfers into the bushes and then the ponds and the border of the village. ~| The 1st Mongolian Invasion of Japan | Fall, 1274 |~ *All Photos were taken by me* The invasions of Japan by the Mongolian empire in 1274 and 1281 were destructive and brutal. Both invasion attempts brought the Empire of Japan closer to destruction, decimating resources and the ranks of the legendary Samurai. Although Japan started the war between the two societies, supported by large numbers of Samurai warriors, the sheer weight and brutality of the Mongol warriors eventually pushed the Samurai to their limits. The run up to the massive invasion was quite simple; in 1266, during the conquest to take China, the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan paused his campaign to send a message to the Emperor of Japan, addressing him as “the ruler of a small country,” and advised the Emperor to pay tribute to him, or else. For six years, the Khan sent massages to Japan five times, all of his messengers coming back without an answer; the Japanese Shogun would not allow the messengers to even land on the main island. In 1271, Kublai Khan conquered China, and declared himself the first Emperor of China’s Yuan Dynasty. As a grandson of the grandmaster Genghis Khan, Kublai controlled much of China, Korea, and of course Mongolia. The Khans now ruled an area from Hungary in the West to the Pacific coast of Siberia in the east. The Khans of the Mongol Empire did not tolerate impudence from their neighbours, and Kublai ordered a strike on Japan as early as 1272. However he was strongly advised by his counsel it’s to wait for a large fleet of warships and more men to be assembled. He agreed, and what a large force it was. The Mongols eventually were able to field over 600 ships of varying sizes, and over 40,000 troops. Japan, was only able to field a weakening force of 10,000 from all the Samurai clans. From the port of Masan in South Korea, the armada set sail into the Sea of Japan. The first islands the Mongols would seize were Tsushima and Iki, halfway between the main islands of Japan and the tip of South Korea. The overwhelming forces quickly overcame the desperate Japanese resistance, slaughtering 300 people. -Graveyard of Empires- A Soviet mechanized patrol consisting of a BTR-70 and BMP-1 is on the hunt for Mujahideen activity on the Kabul-Jalalabad Highway. Little do they know, the insurgents are closer than they think. The Soviet-Afghan War was a nine year guerrilla war between Mujahideen insurgents and the Soviet Army. The tensions that ignited the war were laid in the Saur Revolution in 1978, when Afghan communists staged a successful coup. Once in power, the communists began to initiate many radical reform programs and made brutal reprisals against any opposition. Their rule quickly became deeply unpopular among the rural population, and by April 1979, large swathes of the country were in open revolt against the government. In keeping with the Brezhnev Doctrine, the Soviet Union deployed the 40th army to support the government. They moved quickly to consolidate power, using special forces to assassinate the president (who belonged to a rival faction) and installed a Soviet loyalist. The Soviets controlled urban centers, but struggled to combat a well established insurgency in difficult mountainous terrain. International reaction to the invasion was extremely negative. A UN resolution protested the invasion, and the US led a boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. In popular culture, Rambo III famously declared “this film is dedicated to the brave mujahideen fighters of Afghanistan”. Due to the level of international support, the insurgents received large amounts of funding and material from many nations. This complicated the Soviet counter insurgency further. The Soviets relied on heavy use of air power to subjugate resistance, but the CIA supplied insurgents with FIM-92 Stinger missiles (the bleeding edge in MANPADS tech) which negated this tactic. With losses mounting over the 9 year war, Gorbachev began withdrawal in 1988. The military and economic drain of the war crippled the USSR, accelerating its collapse in 1991. When Richard, called Lionheart, was shipwrecked after his return from his crusade, he had to travel overland through the Roman-German Empire. This was a dangerous undertaking, because during the Crusade he had insulted the honour of Duke Leopold V, who did not want to simply accept the insult and longed for retribution. He was discovered by Leopolds troops on his way to Bavaria in December 1192 and had to go into his captivity. It is said that the English king, dressed as a simple pilgrim with only a few companions, dared to make his way through the area. Such a course of action was not worthy of the honor of a king. However, it is possible that the circumstances demanded this procedure. Nevertheless, we should be careful when we take over the representations from the sources. It is important to note that in the Middle Ages, honour and status were regarded as a tangible value, were publicly demonstrated and thus had a great influence on the actions of the persons. Something that we struggle to imagine today. This little piece of history, which I heard in my lecture on the Middle Ages this Corona-semester, I present to you here today. More precisely, I show you a day of the King as it could have been in that time. He is on his way to Bavaria and has to take a forest path. The companions of the king I could not represent because of missing figures. I hope that you still like the scene. With every new model I try to improve in terms of photography, image editing and of course the actual LEGO building. If you want to know how the story continues, you should take a look at Medieval LEGO by Greyson Beights. Among other things the captivity of Richard is shown there as a LEGO model. Since Im currently in my last exam phase of my bachelor, its pretty quiet on my account. This will change at the end of August. The July issue of our newsletter will be published nevertheless.
