The other day I actually got dressed. Hard to believe but it’s a rarity these days. I know I haven’t posted in a bit about my illlness. Alongside of that I have some pretty big vitamin deficiencies that are probably part of the cause of why I got sick and my body isn’t recovering. So a relief to have some kind of diagnosis but at the same time no end time on how long healing will be. I’m working with some health professionals to get my body healthy again. So I’m doing everything I know to stay healthy. But relying on God(feel free to heal me anytime now big guy 🙃) my hubs and the help of my dear friends. This picture is special to me because I had a lot of fun just expressing myself through getting dressed and felt better for doing it. Sometimes it’s just the small things. And sometimes laying bed is what I need. I’m learning that just because I have a good couple of days doesn’t mean I should try and get in as much as possible although I’m eager to. Before I became a mother, I was brainwashed by a society that values individual gain, status, competition & separation.   So when I became a mother, the very essence of motherhood opposed all that society had taught me.   This contributed to me initially feeling disempowered & inadequate.   Society celebrates productivity that CAN be measured. No part of motherhood can be measured, no score recorded & many of it is unseen.   I spent hours feeding my baby & many more settling her - both with challenges which at times I felt I was failing. I also spent hours staring at her, lying skin to skin, wondering how I could’ve grown her, bonding & falling deeper in love.   Yet going by society’s standards – I wasn’t doing much.   If society does not acknowledge, support or value this transformation a mother goes through & the role she has taken on, she often believes she is failing – when measured against society’s values it’s no wonder she feels like this.   I now know this was largely contributed to what we all go through - called ‘matrescence’ – the birth of a mother. Much like the transition a child goes through to become an adult – adolescence.   The moment a child is born, so is a mother & that mother never existed before. Her body, mind & soul need time & understanding to adjust, transition and transform.   The importance of maternal values – compassion, empathy & patience is often unseen, yet is just as important within our society & needs to be talked about openly for our new & to-be mothers. Those feelings of not feeling validated, feeling unseen by society can go on for years, causing decline in mental health.   Your reminder mama - you are planting seeds that you may never see, but society will benefit from. Seeds of love, patience, empathy and compassion. You’re not failing, you’re the rock, the cement that holds not only your family together but ripples throughout the whole of society.     What you do matters. Look to your child for validation, not society and see the love in their eyes reflected back. A basic eg. is if I know I have the most energy and am more likely to get my butt exercising in the morning then that’s where I will schedule it. Another eg. If I know I make shitty decisions, poor choices and am not a nice human with not much sleep then… I make sleep a priority If I know that I get burnt out when I give to much time to others and not myself I learn to say NO SEE HOW YOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE CAN HELP YOU OUT HERE It’s when we start ignoring and creating cognitive dissonance with these behaviours and choices that problems and CONSEQUENCES CAN OCCUR.. Really quite avoidable ones.. Why do we always go to others for answers? HAVE YOU TAKEN THE TIME LATELY TO KNOW YOURSELF TRY THIS: - Write down your common daily habits - Beside them How they make you feel? The outcome of the habits? The consequence? - Write down any new habits you want to create - What’s the outcome for them? How will they make you feel? Consequences if you don’t prioritise these? Don’t judge yourself. Question why you are feeling big emotions and how you can move through them. ✨ Ask yourself how you WANT to feel that day. Maybe it’s calm, relaxed, chill, neutral, happy, excited. Whatever it is, give yourself something to work towards. ✨ Ask yourself what you can do that day to move TOWARDS that feeling that you want to feel. ✨ STICK TO YOUR MORNING ROUTINE. It’s easy to push caring for ourselves to the side when we feel big emotions. You are still important, even if you feel crappy. ✨ Meditate to calm your thoughts. ✨ Have a shower - put on your favourite song to sing and dance it out. Get that energy shifting in your body! ✨ Move your body in some way during that day. ✨ Let someone know that you’re feeling flat. It’s true what they say, sometimes a problem shared is a problem halved. ✨ Create an environment you enjoy that day. Can you put your favourite podcasts or music on in your headphones? Put your essential oils on in the diffuser. Get outside in the fresh air. Treat yourself to a break at work with a tea or coffee in the sun. Don’t beat yourself up for having feelings. We have our spectrum of emotions for a reason - but that also doesn’t mean we need to sit and wallow in the ‘bad’ feelings all day. Let yourself feel. Express. Lean into it. So you have your newborn safe at home and ohh aren’t they just squishy little balls of perfection. You may be thinking you struck luck in the sleep department and then BAM, your sleepy newborn wakes, starts screaming hours on end and your left wondering where did our content baby go??? This usually occurs around week 3, your baby’s first real growth spurt! All of a sudden their feeding patterns will change, their sleep will be all over the shop and they will want to be held constantly. Google will be whipped out, Instagram will be scrolled through hundreds of times as you try to find the solution to getting your content bub back. This is all part of healthy newborn behaviour and development. So from mama to mama and paed nurse to mama here are some tips no solutions. Because solutions are pointless at this age: • Stop putting any expectations on yourself and your baby. Remember your both learning and this shit takes time. • Allow your baby the closeness they are wanting, don’t try the self-settling, they’re not ready. Hold them close try baby wearing & skin to skin. • Cluster feeding is so important but exhausting for you. They are simply increasing the supply to meet their growing demands. Allow them to feed when they need, never put them on a feeding schedule. This will settle over a few days to a week. • Rest, I know, I know shut up Vanessa and stop telling me to sleep when the baby sleeps. I’m not telling you to sleep, but you need your rest. • Get some fresh air and sunshine, this always helps a foggy brain and exhausted body. • When they won’t stop crying? Darken the room, go skin to skin, put some nice music on, a relaxing diffuser blend (not too strong) and mama breathe. When your relaxed baby will relax. If you’re on your own – put bubs in the basinett and walk away, take a 5 minute break, regain your calm and come back. And yes it is ok to cry yourself. Like I said this shit is exhausting and no one ever tells you just how tiring and demanding newborns are. Tandem nursing usually means little to no rest. This photo takes me back. The girls were about six months old at this point. I was getting very little sleep, and what I got was restless. - Our bedtime routine began around this time. We went upstairs to my bed and got them all snuggled in their sleep sacs. They often would tandem nurse in the side-lying stacked position, but this particular night Aria wasn’t having it. So Asher got the top bunk and passed right out. - These were some really tough times filled with little sleep and lots of unnecessary arguing. I thought it was my sleep deprivation that kept us constantly at odds, but I eventually realized, It’s HIM, not ME. Everyone excited for the first girl to our family. The first granddaughter on each side. We didn’t even know the results of the election for another 24 hours. Babies can be a great distraction from the world around you. They consume your energy. Your time. And now four years later, two more babies added.... I feel the same. The reason why I justify turning off a horrific sight to watch. I have to stay well. I need sleep. Littles need me. But I would be lying if I said I was not worried. I’m worried. I know you are too. No matter what side you are on. Because the divide is awful. It’s gut wrenching really. When did we stop caring about our neighbors? When did we decide it was ok to not be respectful when others spoke? When did we stop pausing to listen? When did we decide it’s ok to be inhumane to entire groups of people? Today I’m sad. Today I’m checking out and distracting myself with the busy motherhood that is my life. Because if I don’t... I fear the next generation will continue this divide. So today, we will practice our listening ears, we will practice our kind words, we will pray for others hearts to be more kind, and we will love our neighbors who look/are/believe different than we do. Äh man måste inte le hela tiden. Livet går upp och ner, det gäller bara att kunna hantera det på rätt sätt för att ta sig vidare! Skulle allt vara en dans på rosor skulle man aldrig utvecklas som människa... Jag skulle ljuga om jag sa att jag tyckt 2/3 av 2020 gått som smör i solsken, och det är jag garanterat inte ensam om. Fast att jag har försökt hålla huvudet uppe har jag kommit till en punkt där bägaren nästan svämmat över ett flertalet gånger. Nu har allt kommit ikapp mig, men det är en fas jag måste gå igenom. På något sätt har jag valt det själv. Något jag inte valt själv däremot är alla inställda resor och alla ofrivilliga tränings uppehåll, något som alltid får mig att må väldigt bra. Istället har jag åsidosatt mig själv för att hjälpa andra. Får man säga att jag är trött på människor? Jag är jävligt trött på människor! Tanken på hur bortskämda vi är i Sverige och hur lite kunskap den svenska befolkningen har om sina kroppar och sin hälsa får mig att bli skräckslagen, irriterad och otrevlig på samma gång. Att rädda liv är det bästa jag vet, men att känna sig utnyttjad, ovärdig och nertrampad som sjuksköterska är långt ifrån okej.. 32 weeks and still going strong 💪🏻 Having a long history of low back pain and sciatica, I started my pregnancy quite anxious as I feared these aches and pains would start again because of the ever growing bump and extra weight. However, I have been somewhat surprised at how well it’s been going. I’m not denying that there has been some parts that haven’t been fun (hello first trimester nausea and fatigue) or that these major hormonal and physical changes have a real influence (aka waking up at least 3 times at night to go to the toilet). But what I’ve slowly understood overtime, it’s that there is no difference between emotional/mental and physical wellbeing. They are always connected. And so when you are happy, feel connected to the people you love, find purpose and joy in your every day life, when you stop worrying about what others might think or say about you and start believing that you are enough, your body somehow magically starts healing and feeling good too. Obviously it doesn’t happen overnight or isn’t as simple as following a step-by-step recipe to happiness. It’s more of a long, tangled and sometimes messy journey back to yourself.
