I’ve been gardening in a few small flower boxes I have in my apartments back yard recently, and I love the meaning behind gardening. After you have found good soil, planted the seeds into it, and cared for the flowers on a daily basis the process begins. A few weeks after planting and caring for them, you see the flowers start to show and you wonder to yourself why they are not growing faster. Regardless of your mild frustration you continue caring for the flowers. A few months later you notice that they have grown above the soil another few inches. You now can see some real progress. You get excited, but then a storm comes or Aspen (my dog) eats them and they are gone again. Now you’re really frustrated. You have been putting in work for months now and as soon as you start to see the slightest bit of progress all signs of growth are destroyed. What you do in this moment defines you. Yes I understand, it is just flowers we’re talking about here. But this really reflects growth in all aspects of your life. If you think this is a cool example, I encourage you to read the parable of the sower in the gospels of the Bible. - There is a lot going on in the world right now, and one of the saddest things I see is how divided people are. - Everyone clinging hard to their beliefs with certainty their view is the correct one, whichever side they are on. - People calling names, making accusations, and much more. - I challenge you to three things: - 1️⃣ Open your heart to empathy. Understand where other people are coming from, and why they may have a certain point of view. We all have different backgrounds which have affected our world views. And trust me when I say that telling someone that they are wrong is not the way to get them to see your point of view, but instead will create a nice argument where two people cling hard to their beliefs and nothing is really accomplished. - 2️⃣ Open your eyes. Some weird things are going on right now with censorship. Remember that this country was founded on the freedom of speech, and everyone should have that right. Although it seems that certain things are really being protected from being seen right now. At the least I think we can agree that this is interesting. - 3️⃣ Open your mind. Form your own opinions by asking questions. Instead of just taking everything you see on the news, social media, or someone’s tweet, to be 100% true, find out how these things feel in your heart. Ask if it’s true for you. Do some deeper digging. Listen to some other perspectives to have a diverse understanding of a subject and form your own opinions. - And above all else, don’t forget to look for reasons to be happy during this time. No I don’t mean to continue with the day to day and feel okay, but to really feel good from within. Love, joy, excitement, all those things that are inside of us waiting to come out and play.
