Calcutta in the 1960s was a city of political upheavals, mass agitation, labor strikes and student unions’ protests. The turbulent being of the city served as the base of the Left’s rise West Bengal. Deindustrialization of the state began to take place in the 1960s leaving the next generations high and dry. The Naxalite movement, led by the fuming youth of Calcutta in the 1960s, triggered the political agitation. A massive flow of starved, penniless refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during the onset of the Liberation War of 1971 added to Calcutta’s socio-political stagnation. • • • • • • #rebootkolkata #migration #struggle #oldmemories #riots #kolkatasillusion #kolkatastreets #kolkatabloggers #kolkatadiaries #kolkatabuzz - @rebootkolkata on Instagram

There are dozens of tiny harbours in Kinshasa. They are all separate concessions. In a country the size of Europe, with limited and poor roads, the rivers are veritable lifelines. Bustling harbours like this one attract sellers, of cigarettes and alcohol, of streetfood or charcoal. Their customers are the crews of the many boats that moor here and the many passengers that board transport ships clandestinely. #Kinshasa #Congoriver #fleuvecongo #RDC #DRC #port #Africa #discovery #travel #discovery #🇨🇩 - @krispannecoucke on Instagram

#Photographs I took in July 1984 during apartheid. America has its own forms of apartheid, unaddressed for far too long. A society that is willfully blind or apathetic about the political and economic disenfranchisement of its black citizens is not very different from one built on subjugation of black people by a white supremacist minority. . . . . #bnwmood #storyofthestreet #streetdreamsmag #life_is_street #friendsinbnw #friendsinstreets #raw_bnw #raw_streets #bnw_demand #bnw_greatshots #badass_bnw #alternative_bnw #streetizm #zonestreet #fromstreetswithlove #sweet_street_beat #spi_bnw #lensculturestreets #timeless_streets #myspc #hcsc_street #streetsgrammer #bnw_rose #thesestreetsmag - @cooler.than.mcqueen on Instagram

Today is the International Day of Peace, or unofficially World Peace Day. ⠀ #UN has dedicated it to the world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. ⠀ This day we would like to remind you two photos both of which became winners of #stenincontest2019 Escaping Conflict To Another.Syria and Escaping Conflict To Another.France. Both were made by @sameer_aldoumy, a freelance photographer from France, native from Syria. They are connected by one story. ⠀ It’s how Sameer by himself describes what happens on the photos: “By living war for over 7 years, I have significantly impressed by how people risk their lives after each airstrike in order to save others. This photo of the young man who is carrying the injured little girl simply illustrates those extraordinary moments. The other photo of the Yellow Vests protest takes on a completely different meaning for me. As I have just escaped 7 years of war in my country Syria, I thought that by coming to Europe I would find some peace. This concept has completely destroyed when French Yellow-Jackets demonstrations took place. Unconsciously, I relived things that I have witnessed during that dreadful war.” ⠀ Pictures took 1st place in Top News category, special prize “For humanitarian photography” from @ICRC and Jury Honorable mention correspondently. ⠀ #photography #photojournalism #photocontest #Syria #ICRC #war #France #YellowVests #WorldPeaceDay - @stenincontest on Instagram

This week, “Drowning in Plastic” opened at Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. Photos by James Whitlow Delano @jameswhitlowdelano, Philippines 1st: Man sorts recyclable plastics at a recycling business in Happyland district in the Tondo slum. Manila, Philippines Tondo and other Metro Manila slums are overrun with plastic and other recyclable materials, creating jobs for local residents in the recycling business. Not only is plastic creating massive problems to the marine ecosystem where zooplankton, the foundation of the marine ecosystem, mistake micro plastic for food – weakening them by filling their stomachs with toxics not food - but this could lead to a collapse of marine ecosystems upon which all sea life, including humans, depend. The primary component in plastic is petroleum. Perversely, petroleum fuels are also used to in the production of plastic, releasing greenhouse gases and warming the atmosphere. There needs to be a paradigm shift need for humanity to deal with the manifold environmental problems related to this most-versatile of materials. 2nd: Plastic accumulates in the Tullahan River delta shortly before it empties into Manila Bay and eventually the South China Sea. Six of the top 10 contributors to ocean plastic are the nations surrounding the South China Sea - the Philippines is the world’s third largest contributor to ocean plastic behind China and Indonesia. 3rd: Outrigger fishing boats amidst a great congregation of floating plastic, styrofoam and the remains of water hyacinth, an exotic species of floating plant that has spread like wildfire in Southeast Asia at the Navotas Fish Port Complex. Metro Manila, Philippines As dramatic as floating plastic is, Erik van Sebille, at Utrecht University in the Netherlands found in 2015 that 95% - 99% of all plastic in the ocean is not on the surface anymore. Venue: Visa Pour LImage Couvent des Minimes Perpignan, France 29 August – 27 September 2020 10am – 8pm More Info: https://www.visapourlimage.com/en/festival/exhibitions/une-planete-noyee-dans-le-plastique #VisaPourL’Image #plastic #photoexhibition #perpignan #reportage #jameswhitlowdelano #environment #microplastic #photojournalism - @fotoevidencepressnyc on Instagram
