I’m the extroverted introvert. I know, sounds weird, and maybe not what you expected or thought about me. But I assure you it’s true. This is a tough time for me, on many levels. There are a lot of farmers in isolation, not just now, but always. Could be their rural location, or the fact that they work a lot and don’t have time for social interactions. But isolation is something that’s pretty common in agriculture. And while I’m used to isolation, and very often enjoy it, there can be a deep sadness in it. There are times I can be surrounded by people, but feel incredibly alone. There are times when I’m alone, and feel completely at home and at peace. But where it really hurts, is when you’re alone, and feel even more alone... and disconnected, unappreciated, misunderstood. This is one of those times. I know that part of it is the situation we’re all in. I know that part of it is because I just had some experiences that will continue to shape me. I know that the change in seasons can be hard for me. Sometimes knowing all those things doesn’t change the fact that it’s hard. I try to focus on the good things. The little details. The things that bring joy... I try to bring joy to other people too, and that helps. But here we are. Here I am. Always remember that we can talk about this stuff. That there are people in your lives that love you and will listen to you. No matter how low you think you are, no matter how bad it is, there is hope. - @will_bergmann on Instagram

In August of 1995, the raid of a garment factory in El Monte revealed that 72 Thai nationals had been housed for up to seven years as indentured workers by a family-owned firm that required them to work over 18 hours a day, seven days per week, under threat of violence and retaliation. The case of El Monte became the first recognized case of modern-day slavery and exposed both the global phenomenon of human trafficking and the presence of trafficking nationally and even within our own communities. • This image shows the street curb just north of the of the driveway entrance to the compound which housed Thai workers, the location of which is detailed in a surveillance report filed in June of 1995. • The Museum of Social Justice, in partnership with the Thai Community Development Center, will exhibit: “Thai El Monte Garment Workers: The Return of Slavery and Trafficking in the Modern Era.” This exhibition tells the story of the case from the perspectives of the survivors, featuring their testimonies, images and maps of the compound, and other artifacts. #elmonte #thaicdc #humantrafficking #elmontegarmentworkers #museumofsocialjustice - @museumofsocialjustice on Instagram

Despite hysteria from recent media reports documenting the plight of the brave and noble white fella workers stationed there, the proud Warlpiri nation, and their community of Yuendumu, is a safe and welcoming place to work and live. A film I made with my Warlpiri co-workers at PAW Media just won Best Language & Culture Award at the 2019 First Nations Indigenous Media Awards. The film is about WYDAC, a community formed and led organisation best known for successfully dealing, in Yapa way, with the scourge of petrol sniffing in the 90’s. WALK GOOD. a love letter to Jamaica (LINK IN BIO) A Patois expression wishing good fortune to a departing traveler, “Walk Good” is an abstract visual account of a Jamaican experience, documented through the lens of South African filmmakers Adriaan Louw and Roberto Colombo. Opening with the recording of a young man singing a mournful song of goodbye to an unknown person, despondence and triumph live side-by-side, celebrating and mourning life lost through death, travel, and migration, which the filmmakers argue feel the same. Accompanied by the voice of Jamaican dub poet, Sheldon R. Shepherd, the sometimes haunting silence which punctuates the film creates an air of weightlessness. The camera drifts as if from the view of a poltergeist, a ghostly presence exploring the theme of freedom in earnest. The raw street dance and serrated edge of dancehall contrast with the flattering Caribbean landscape. With the simple joy of riding bikes —“once the bike is good, you good”—Louw and Colombo show us that the pursuit of freedom is persistent in the seeming chaos of Jamaican life. It parallels the Rastafarian lifestyle, and dancehall itself, as platforms for Jamaicans to express themselves, to experience a mental and spiritual freedom that the country’s independence has yet to grant its people. “Walk Good“ captures the beauty and sadness of travelling to, falling in love with, and leaving Jamaica. Fender - the bloodline of music (link in bio) Late summer Derek and I took a road-trip out to LA. For hours we just talked about crafting meaningful stories and what people connect to.
