A Short-tailed Weasel with a Meadow Vole kill. I had setup along a creek to photograph some Kinglets that were gathering food for their young. After about 45 minutes of being decimated by mosquitoes, I saw a small body bobbing through the grasses. I was confused at first, as the mystery animals shape made no sense. But as it got closer, I was able to tell it was a small mustelid with a big kill blocking most of its face. I dropped to the ground and fired off a few shots before this beautiful Short-tailed Weasel made its way into the taller grasses. Last summer, and for the past two months, Ive never encountered this species. Now Ive had 2 sightings in the past 2 days, both times they were hunting voles. We are very happy to announce that Harris has found love again! As you all know, Harris was paired up with Apricot, who sadly passed away recently after reaching an impressive 16 years of age, leaving Harris alone for the first time in four years. Whilst he appeared to have resigned himself back to the bachelor lifestyle, there’s now no female telling him how to make his bed - what a mess! Naturally otters live in pairs and he’s such a good partner that the team wanted him to be able to get a second chance of love. The search began to find Harris a new partner. The team created Harris a dating profile, highlighting all he has to offer, sending it out in the hope of finding his new perfect match. The team were delighted to receive some photos back from an otter looking for love at @sealifescarborough who also recently lost her partner. Pumpkin, a female otter in Scarborough has very recently lost her elderly partner Eric, so the team thought they would be the perfect match. The introduction of Asian short-clawed otters can be nerve racking and difficult to get right. To ensure the best chance of a new pairing getting off on the right foot, it’s best to introduce a new male into a female’s territory so that the male more easily submits to the female on first meeting. For this reason Harris will be moving up to Pumpkin’s enclosure to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. Harris came to us from the Welsh Mountain Zoo in 2016 after being rejected by his family. There was certainly something about Harris that ticked all the boxes for our female otter Apricot, and after a few days of careful introductions they settled in beautifully together. He was a doting partner to Apricot, so when she passed away a few weeks back he was absolutely lost. @sealifescarborough are real otter experts and the team at the Sanctuary couldn’t be happier that Harris will be cared for by their animal care experts. We will be very sad to see Harris go as he is such a character but we will be keeping in touch regularly to see how him and Pumpkin get on. #critterupdate I channeled the energy of my Québécois fur trader ancestors and entrapped this Alaska Marmot like Im Catherine Zeta Jones. I believe its an Alaska Marmot as opposed to a Hoary Marmot because I got him north of the Yukon River. Marmots are deeply food motivated during the summer because they hibernate through the winter, so theyre really trying to pack on the pounds by chugging dandelion leaves and such. They can get up to damn near 20lbs off straight up salads. They get their fiber for sure. So much roughage in these bad mamajammas. If theres an apocalypse-type situation, you can keep yourself fed by trapping animals like this. Easier than hunting and fishing, and it frees up time to accomplish other camp tasks. We would say that Pilanesberg is one of the best places to see caracals in the wild. Not that they are easy to find, but many more sightings of them are reported there than in Kruger. Just after entering Tshukudu we saw this Caracal mom with 2 kittens moving in our direction. As we were last in line we had the best view following them in reverse. Je mi jasný, že spoustu z vás moje fotky z přírody moc nezajímají, ale o tenhle úlovek se musím podělit. Fotka sice není moc kvalitní, ale slunce naproti mi bohužel moc nepřálo. Jenže tahle veverka, ta mi přála, a to víc než dost. Nikdy v životě jsem neměla možnost se takhle dlouho na veverku dívat, a že i ona se dívala na mě. Vydržela na jednom místě takovou dobu, že si stihla rozlousknout i dva oříšky. I didn’t see anyone today so I’m wearing this again tomorrow. The stoat, short tailed weasel, or ermine are all names for this little creature. The ermine pictured above was found in @katmainpp sporting the coat it will wear all summer. The fur is light brown above and white below, but then in the winter many short tailed weasel’s fur will turn all white except for the tail, which is black-tipped all year. Work on the new edition of Mammals of Madagascar continues. I’ve recently been researching the latest work on nocturnal dwarf lemurs, genus Cheirogaleus. So here are a couple of interesting facts. They are the only group of primates compelled to hibernate, in their case over the austral winter (May-October). Prior to the dormant period they eat large quantities of high calorific foods, mainly fatty fruits and berries and consequently lay down significant fat reserves. Much of this fat is stored in the tail. At the beginning of dormancy, this fat-tailed dwarf lemur might weigh twice as much as it does when it eventually emerges from hibernation some five months later. This photo was taken shortly after the lemur had emerged and its obvious how ‘thin’ the tail is, with all fat reserves depleted. The slender loris calls Bengaluru home but is struggling to find canopy. The animal, which spends most of its time in canopies, is found across peninsular India and parts of Sri Lanka. Bengaluru comes in the northern end of the range, and before it became the country’s third most populous city, it was also home to a significant number of lorises. Now, the species has somehow clung to life in Bengaluru’s remnant green spaces, even as the city gets concretised at a frantic pace. Tree canopies act like highways for arboreal animals such as the slender loris to move between areas. When continuous patches of green become isolated patches, it can have catastrophic effects on loris populations, who, unlike monkeys, do not jump between branches nor are seen descending on the ground to cross wide open spaces. A couple of months ago I spent some time capturing mouse lemurs at Nahampoana Private Reserve in SE Madagascar. I was hoping to collect further biometric data on the Endangered Microcebus tanosi, but I have a suspicion that instead I was actually capturing a different species..! Mouse lemurs are extremely difficult to tell apart in the field and I have to rely on genetic confirmation to be sure of the identity. #PorTrásDaCâmera “Ouvir os galhos das árvores tremendo pela presença de macacos é uma das sensações que mais me emociona como biólogo e fotógrafo. No caso do macaco-barrigudo, a agitação é ainda maior por serem um dos maiores macacos da América Latina e, sem dúvida, um dos mais belos acrobatas da floresta. Normalmente os macacos evitam o contato com humanos, mas este macho era muito calmo e curioso enquanto se alimentava de frutas próximas. Tirei a foto ao pé da montanha entre os Andes e a Amazônia colombiana e faz parte do meu projeto @vanishingprimates como um Explorador National Geographic.
