It has evolved many times in numerous different organisms (birds, butterflies, reptiles, octopus, to name a few) and has a range of functions including visual communication, camouflage, thermoregulation, strength, water repellence and sexual signalling. Its function in myxomycetes is unclear, if indeed it has a function. It seems to provide a waterproof membrane in some species which may help to resist fungal attack. It also may strengthen the membrane. The fact that so many myxos have some iridescence, although it is inconspicuous in many species, suggests it could simply be a by-product of a membrane made of non-cellular material. . . The first objective of our weekend mission was splitting up into small terms to deploy a total of six stream water temperature monitors in strategic locations throughout the watershed. Why monitor the water temperature? In our attempt to understand how a watershed that was known to be practically “dead” made a miraculous recovery, we’ve hypothesized several potential answers. One being that the brook trout may have adapted to differing water temperature and/or have become genetically wired to move great distances through the watershed to find spring holes and seeps to take refuge at times of distress. Our temperature loggers will remain in their locations for one year. After which, teams will then head back out and retrieve the monitors using their gps coordinates, allowing us to download and interpret the data. Back at the farm... just rinsing some naturally dyed wool and hanging it up to dry. The speckled wool was dyed with black hollyhock flowers, marigold flowers and red onion skins. The yellow wool being dipped in the cast iron pot shows how iron modified the dye to ‘sadden’ it. Nothing sad about a nice soft green and yellow though. Those of you who follow me know that my specialty is photography of Myxomycetes (slime molds) and tiny fungi. Today we are going really tiny! Microscopic! These are actually a type of bacteria, called Myxobacteria, probably genus Stigmatella. They look like they are right out of a Dr. Seuss book, dont they?! These fruiting bodies are less than a quarter of a millimeter tall. Thats about the size of two human hairs! They bear some resemblance to slime molds, but the main resemblance is in the Greek origin of their name. Slime molds are Myxomycetes, coming from the Greek words for slime/mucus and fungi. But these are neither slime mold nor fungi. They are actually bacteria!!! They are Myxobacteria, because, like slime molds, in part of their life cycle they come together and glide in search of nutrients. This coordination in swarms (microbiologists actually call them wolf packs!) allows them to pool their secretions of extracellular digestive enzymes to kill and consume microorganisms. When nutrients are scarce, tens of thousands of individual cells aggregate to form these fruiting bodies. This improves colony survival in two ways -- first because the cells can pool their secreted digestive enzymes, and second because the fruiting bodies have a localized concentration of spores, which can then germinate to form a new colony. I find this fascinating and beautiful, and so incredibly cool! When you photograph at such high magnifications, the depth of field is measured in thousandths of a millimeter, so focus stacking is a must. The microscope lens is mounted on my camera, and the camera/lens is mounted on an electronic rail that moves in micro millimeter steps to take hundreds of photos, each with a slightly different focal point. Specialized software is then used to combine the in-focus portions of each individual image. Its quite a challenge to do this work, but I love the challenge, and the results of that effort. Я всегда с удовольствием беру заказы по Ленобласти, мне нравится бывать в новых местах😃 Так недавно открыла для себя пляж в Токсово, озеро Хепоярви. ⠀ Съездили туда вчера с подругой и нашими трехгодовалыми малышами, очень классно провели время 😃 ⠀ Пока мы загорали, детки играли на детской площадке))) Покушать мы брали с собой, но если не хочется заморачиваться, то там есть кафе)) После сытного обеда мы отправились на поиски сокровища на лодке😄 обычная лодка на веслах, стоит всего 400р.час. Для деток это было прям настоящее приключение: мы доплыли до другого берега и нашли там Тарзанку, потом добрались до маленького островка посреди озера, высадились на этом островке и искали сокровища, детки нашли конфетки😆 в лодку с собой брали термос с чаем и вкусняшки, поэтому получился отличный пикник на воде😊 ⠀ Доезжаете в общем до базы отдыха Северный склон (в 2гис можно забить), там на парковке можно оставить машину и через дорогу от стоянки переходите к озеру)) @severniy_sklon_toxovo На этой базе есть еще бесплатный зоопарк)) Так же можно взять на прокат велосипеды, квадроциклы детские и взрослые)) Прямо на берегу или на территории базы можно арендовать баню или домик с мангалом)) Зимой обязательно поедем кататься туда на лыжах😃 Надеюсь этой зимой будет снег🤞 ⠀ Мамочки, поделитесь местами где вы проводите летние деньки с ребятишками???))) Welp I hope this wasn’t a bad choice. Over the last week I’ve noticed a good bit of continuous tissue loss on the main trunk of my birdsnest coral. I took 4 smaller frags from it and cut the main truck off and left the base of the original frag as well. HEAVY SMOKING 🚬 #LungHealth These are the charcoaled lungs of a life-long heavy smoker! Have you ever wondered where the black or brown color comes from? When you inhale cigarette smoke, there are thousands of tiny carbon-based particles that are inhaled. As soon as you inhale a puff of cigarette smoke, your body is alerted to the fact that toxic particles have invaded. Inflammatory cells rush to the scene. One type of white blood cell called macrophages may be thought of as the garbage trucks of our immune systems. Macrophages essentially eat the nasty brown-black particles in cigarette smoke in a process called phagocytosis. Since these particles could be damaging even to garbage truck cells, they are walled off in tiny vesicles and stored as toxic waste. And there they sit. As more and more macrophages containing debris build up in the lungs and lymph nodes within the chest, the darker the lungs appear. Its important to state that not all black lungs are related to tobacco smoke. Other irritants that can be inhaled may cause this appearance as well, such as the black lung disease sometimes seen in coal miners. A 2018 large-scale study of more than 100,000 patients by the Harvard School of Public Health found that those who chose to eat a healthy diet rich in vegetables; exercise at least 30 minutes a day; maintain a healthy body weight; limit their alcohol use; & chose not to smoke during adulthood, had an 82% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, a 65% lower chance of dying from cancer, and a 74% lower risk of dying from all causes during follow-up. More Contagious Coronavirus Strain Now Dominates The first study to analyze the structure of the novel coronavirus from two waves of infection in a major city found that a more contagious strain dominates recent samples, researchers from Houston Methodist Hospital said on Wednesday. They examined more than 5,000 genomes from viruses recovered in the earliest phase of the pandemic in Houston, an ethnically diverse city of 7 million, and from an ongoing more recent wave of infections. The study, published as a preprint on the medRxiv server, found that nearly all (99.9%) of the strains in the second wave had a mutation, known as D614G, which has been shown to increase the number of spikes on the crown-shaped virus, increasing its ability to infect cells. In the earlier wave, 82% of genomes had the D614G mutation. The Houston researchers said patients infected with the variant strain had significantly higher amounts of the virus on initial diagnosis. But they found little evidence that mutations in the virus have made it deadlier, noting that severity of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, was more strongly linked to patients underlying medical conditions and genetics. DIY makeup wipes! 🙌🏽 by @lowtoxcreations 💃🏼 Low waste, chemical free, cheap and effective makeup wipes you can make at home! 🌟 What you’ll need: - Fractionated coconut oil - Reusable makeup pads (I use @ecosophist) - Witchazel - A jar - Water - Lemon, Peppermint, Tea tree, Purification and eucalyptus EO - for their properties, you don’t have to add them all Add your reusable makeup wipes into a glass jar In a bowl mix 2 table spoons of coconut oil, 1 squirt of witchhazel, water and the oils of your choice - I did 3 drops of each (I chose the ones above as they are antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral etc) Add the mixture to your jar and top with water. Once you use wipes just put them in the wash and add them back into your jar - it should last you a while before you have to replace the mixture. This is a super cheap (much cheaper than the cost of using disposable ones over time) and easy DIY and has next to no waste 🙌🏽 What do you think? In the Nigerian village of Ebocha, residents eyes burn from flames and blindness is common. Skin diseases, asthma, chronic coughs, lung problems, neurological conditions and cancers are also a reality. The cause? Oil extraction. Last week Department of Wildlife Resources hatchery staff and biologists stocked 3,525 fingerling muskellunge (musky) into eight different waters. The 8-inch musky were cared for by DWR Buller Hatchery staff over the past five months. Young musky feed on zooplankton in hatchery ponds. They then transition to eating minnows until they grow big enough to be stocked. Virginia DWR stocks musky to provide an exciting trophy fishing opportunity for the anglers of the commonwealth.
