The concrete soil trigger hymns of suffocation, streetlights still convey the tales of forgiveness to my own self. A broken trail prevails to clutched repression, shrubs try to hide the emotions l often decay in. Trademarks of duality of mind and heart creed all over, fungus hint at the ways l motify this flesh of mine. The malicious rocks grapple sights of breakage, moonlight still render the chaos of sustaining l bleed everyday. A forlorn cave enclose nomad isolation, stones gleam upon reasons why gloom feeds on my skin. Figures of mundane activity of passing emotions reside here, signs of escape empathize the echoing silence within me. The hollow compound cradle bits of my reckless time, fireflies still glint at the darkness waiting to capture my mind. A lament tunnel moves to stubborn numbness, speed decipher myraids of timeframe l refused my identity. Domb of insecurity mould traces of finding oneselves, sounds of trespassing proclaim notions of acceptance l always crave. The awaiting vision motion a catastrophe meant to be perished sooner or later, lights still mourn about the urges of never discovering home. A rustic room motions to tranquil purgatory, pictures represent the crumbs of self l willingly left behind. Funitures of withering denounce ideas of movement, journals of deprivation murmur truths about who lve become. It’s impossible to look at the artist Heji Shin (@hejishin)’s series “Baby” — a piece from which is pictured here — without wondering how she managed to pull it off. Shin worked with a midwife to secure permission from the mothers, who received a set of more conventional photos documenting the birth in exchange for allowing Shin in the room. Outside of medical contexts, babies tend to be photographed sentimentally, but Shin spares us none of the violent intensity of bringing about life and of being alive. To have a child is a risk, to make art is a risk — and Shin’s images simultaneously showcase the fragility of the human animal and the ferocity of its will. “I really do believe that we all have a cherry-picking view on what nature is, like it’s a beautiful landscape that we experience on a road trip,” says Shin, who is interested in the assumptions we bring to seeing the world. Her work is a reminder that art has always served as a playground for the cultural subconscious, and poses an important question for the contemporary age: What do we expect art to do, and does the artist have a responsibility to do it? . More work from my new series ‘The Upside Down’ which is a surreal look at the mental state of my family in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. After just a few weeks in my 8 year old son William found it difficult to sleep alone, worrying that the world was going to end and without the daily routine of school, friends and fun my hormonal teenager became frustrated and angry at us all, missing his girlfriend, playing football and even ‘real’ school work. The sudden change in them both made me see their world in an entirely new light, a world which is portrayed in this ongoing series ‘The Upside Down’. Wake Up 🌼 Shraddha opened her eyes on a whim. The room was otherwise dark except for the string of tuni bulbs that garnished the photo framed wall in a golden bright haze. She couldnt move. It was as if her limbs were frozen to the bed. Her eyeballs along with her eyelids danced periodically, but her head. No, she was not dreaming. She was very much awake. This was not the first time. Back home, as a child it started soon after the death of her twin sister, but whenever she went through it, either her mother or father jerked forced her to normal. But now, staying far away from home, she was reduced to dead meat. She could see a figure standing near the bed. The physique quite matched that of hers. She felt as if she was looking at her own horrendous version. Terror seized her the moment she realized that the figure was climbing the bed, slowly approaching her. It kept chanting, “WAKE UP”. Shraddha wanted to scream her lungs out. She did. But not a single cry escaped her mouth. She was not audible to anyone, but herself. As the figure neared her abridging the very gap in between them, Shraddha sacrificed every bit of her life to bring her own self back to life. She sat up. The figure was gone in a blink of an eye. Shraddha was left panting heavy. Her long silky curls dripped wetly. *thud* Something fell down in the kitchen. Shraddha grabbed her pocket knife from under her pillow. As she stepped out of the bed, she heard footsteps. Within a fraction of second, someone ran towards the balcony. She hurried to the balcony. There was no one. Within minutes people gathered under the building from their respective flats. Someone spotted a thief. Shraddha didnt join them although it was just one floor down. Maybe it was the thief? ..................................................................................
