So close, I could smell his breath. If you ever watched the Flinstones, it looks like these Bison are wearing head-pieces from the Royal order of water buffalo Fred n Barney would wear those crazy headgear on occasion. There is a huge herd of bison that are in Custer StatePark. . Its a beautiful park. You drive and look for these huge beasts. On this day, they were mostly in the southern part of the park. Franklin County is in western Maine. Over the past four years, one family has started a new adventure in it which makes the region feel even more western. Michael & Nichole Weaver are the proud owners of Bigelow Fields Ranch. I had the privilege to visit & see the place with my own eyes. It was both breathtaking & surreal. There in one of the most gorgeous parts of Maine — with brilliant fall foliage & beautiful mountains in the backdrop — are creatures I didn’t ever anticipate seeing here in Maine: BISON. The herd started with one bull & six cows; it currently totals 45 of these rugged animals. For full disclosure, let me insert here that there are a couple of mammals for which I have what I’ll call a “robust respect” (others might peg it as borderline fear). Bison & moose. So here I went into moose country to eyeball some bison. I emerged unscathed. I’m not sure we’ll become BFFs, but I was impressed by this wild encounter. Bison are well-suited for Maine. They like to be outdoors & thrive in cold & snowy conditions. Consider them hard-core, winter-loving Mainers. Ranchers Michael & Nichole, like every other Maine family I’ve met in these travels, are dedicated & hard-working. For sure, the scene on their land feels like something straight off a movie set. But there’s no glossing over the fact that a bison ranch demands not only HEART, to make the dream a reality, but BODIES willing to sacrifice & sweat. The investment is already showing great signs of success. The 126 acres is former pastureland. It is undergoing a transformation process that will soon resemble those days gone by — only with Plains bison rather than sheep or cows. As if this endeavor wasn’t enough, Nichole is an avid baker. On Saturday mornings, their porch is transformed into a hutch overflowing with freshly made breads & other goodies. The ranch is on a dirt road in a rural area, but folks line the drive to purchase items before the supply run out. Whether you’re coming for sourdough or a glimpse of bison, it is worth the trip. Well that didn’t take long.....only two days after Yellowstone National Park opened, a tourist was attacked and injured by a bison near Old Faithful. Before the incident, I remember hearing a park employee/resident (not sure which) on the radio exclaim “Visitors have a hard time social distancing from each other, why would we expect them to stay away from the animals?”. In my formative years, youd find me buried into National Geographic Magazine with an unimaginable sense of curiosity. The images captivated my very core, and my spirit danced with insatiable wonder. Id often close my eyes, spin a globe and abruptly stop it with my finger. Wherever it ended up, I would fastidiously go on a research binge deeply trying to humanize and understand these distant places. I was drawn to cultures who seemingly harmoniously lived with nature and truly embodied ideas of community. I aspired to be more like them. Fast forward, I am 35 years old living in Colorado. Many aspirations have come true, and I have a conscious recognition of my privilege; however my insatiable spirit craves more. Not more things. More experiences. More passion, presence and purpose. Ive been working as an Outdoor Guide, Experiential Educator and Photographer for most of my professional life. Ive fostered incredibly special relationships with people around the world who grew up very different than I did. Theyve shaped my perspectives and left an indelible sense of compassion ingrained in my soul. I still look up to those unequivocally intertwined with the earth. Those whove persevered through true adversity with an unmatched sense of dignity,strength, humility and generosity. I want to give back the best way I know how. I’ve been working remote for the past week, while having a seasonal employee tend the flowers. • Vacations are a bit tricky for me because I want to be working all of the time. A good problem to have when you do what you love. • But, this break has been a much needed one. A week road trip to Minnesota turned to 2 months with a camping trip through Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. Spending time in neature filled with fresh air and some wild life was much needed, Yellowstone is truly another planet! Day #2 of the mammals takeover with Montana state parks. We’re introducing you to our friends at @firstpeoples_statepark! There are a wide variety of mammals that call the jump their home. A few are the coyote, the white tailed jackrabbit, the pronghorn, porcupine, and the yellow-bellied marmot.
