U.S Men’s World Cup speed skier, Wiley “Danger” Maple (@wcmaple), is officially calling it a career. I had the chance to meet Wiley two years ago while racing in the @usalpinemasters FIS Masters/Western Regional events at @aspensnowmass . He showed up to the DH race. He is younger than me, and I was running DFL, so they slotted him in right after me. The rush, excitement, and terror of having a World Cup racer right behind me in a DH race at Aspen is something I’ll never forget. DH intervals are 60 seconds, but they gave him a second interval just to make sure he wouldn’t catch me 😂. He ended up beating me by around 20 seconds!! 😬🤷♂️ A lot of people knew him, but you would have no idea he was on the World Cup (besides his finish time). 😉 He was just a regular dude, talking with anyone who wanted to chat. He told us stories about some of his races, specifically the time he got yellow flagged while on course at the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuhel and had to go back to the top to run it again. (Yea, I’m good!). Sounds like he’s sticking around Aspen so maybe we’ll see him at a Masters race again. Congrats on a wild, fun, and crazy career! - @nems_racing on Instagram

Sixty years after it was invented by the British, the chalet ski holiday is under threat from a toxic combination of Covid-19 and Brexit. In the winter of 1958-59, a British 27-year-old travelled from London to the Swiss village of Grindelwald to take up a job. Lovedy Cornish, or Moule as she was then, would be looking after British tourists, mainly cooking and making beds, but she was also making history. For, though no one thought much about it at the time, Lovedy was the world’s first chalet girl. “We had the upstairs floor of a chalet, the bottom half was owned by a family who ran a hardware store,” she told me this month from her home in Cambridge. “The first group of guests included four public schoolboys, a nurse, a secretary, two American airmen and an English major who was drunken and amorous in turn. To me, resiliency is the ability to not let the past define your future. It means to meet every hardship face to face and not back down; to believe in yourself; to learn; to overcome; to forge on; to become a better person. This is how we grow. Take nothing for granted, be accountable, love every opportunity, and cherish the moment. . . The one short story I want to share about Jeff happened a few years ago now. I had just woken up in post op from one of my Vail surgeries and was all alone at the time, still a little disoriented from the meds. Jeff was the friendly and familiar face who stopped by, taking time out of his busy schedule, to check in on me and let me know that everything went smoothly. I will never forget his kindness that he shared with me often. . . Thank you @mikaelashiffrin for your nomination and for sharing your story about resiliency. No one will ever experience the hardships you and your family have gone through this past year. Through all of you, Jeff’s legacy lives on. This group includes Marcus Athans (2000), Heiko Ihns (2002), Tait Jordan (2002), Nathan Romanin (2001), Gerrit van Soest (2001), Heming Sola (2003), and Dylan Timm (2002). There is no set way to the top. In todays society, one size does not fit all. There will always be outliers in skiing and snowboarding and World Cup Dreams is here to support those outliers. Olympian and WCDF trustee Scott Macartney sums it up saying I would not have made this new criteria at age 24, 25, 26 or 27. At 28 I was on a World Cup Podium and finished the season 10th in the world. USST has their model and WCDF is here to fill in the gaps and support the athletes USST overlooks. WCDF cant do anything about the NorAm schedule but we can help provide resources to the many promising athletes that need it. Not the super g result I was hopping for today, sadly lost way to much time in the middle section of the course with first and last splits being ok, but... hopefully I can claw back some places in the alpine combined.
