It’s been a wonderful summer. In spite of so much uncertainty and anxiety, it has been a blessing to create amazing memories with an amazing group of kids. This year, more than ever, we focused on the importance of caring for each other and staying present in the midst of constant change. It hasn’t always been easy, but we are all—campers, volunteers, and staff—richer in understanding and character for our time together. Operating during the pandemic required many compromises and conditions. Even though we could accept far fewer participants than we normally would, we were still able to offer scholarships to so many kids who needed them, and allow for a beautiful and enriching camp experience for everyone. The Impact team owes tremendous thanks and appreciation to all of the families who participated this year, as well as our incredible staff and volunteer team. We also want to express our gratitude to all of you out there for your kind words and support through this unprecedented time. My personal skating was at its peak with lots of tricks, some old, some just learned. My fondest memories were Tony Alva showing up with aqua blue hair. He was ready to judge the big air contest. That was the weirdest hair color Id ever seen in my lifetime Wow! The contest roared on and Bobby Valdez was doing his stalled hand plant inverts and wowing the crowd with that while I was doing face wall aerials. I was going fence high and getting ready for the show down. The judging was crooked as usual! Bobby and I went head to head. I kept blasting face walls while he kept extending his arm higher and higher The crowd was going ballistic! Some people were complaining that Bobbys inverts were a connected trick and not an aerial at all. Anyway it didnt matter. Alva and the fans were loving it and that is what truly matters. Bobby ended up winning the high air contest with an invert, followed by a lot of controversy. You know what? Here’s a crazy thought I’ve come to believe; our talents don’t belong to us. Consider this; if our talents did belong to us then it seems they’d be fully formed at birth and would remain fully formed till death, but they don’t. Our talents in their prime are with us for a short period of our lives and though I believe we can’t claim them to be our own we certainly are responsible to them and that lies in recognizing the initial hazy dream of them, spending years through trials and tribulations developing them and once developed, sharing them with the world. And then when they recede, to let them go, don’t fight and resist the inevitable. Of course easier said than done as one of the biggest challenges of letting go is letting go of the personal identity and history that is inherently wrapped up and woven into the fabric of a talented career; I’m a pro skater, I’m a company owner, I’m a film-maker. This is who I am, I’m none of them, I’m all of them, but they are all fleeting. Letting go of my pro career was the single most important thing I did in skateboarding. Why? Because being a pro was a gift and letting go of that gift when it was time allowed me to pay my ultimate respect to skateboarding itself. It doesn’t belong to me, it’s not about me and I can lay no claim to it. This liberated me to move to the next chapter, from being a pro athlete to working with pro athletes and the entire Powell Peralta experience. This was a lesson learned early that I’ve since applied to all the various stages of my life which are still unfolding. Letting go creates resolution and emptiness and that emptiness is eventually filled back up with new experiences, new chapters and new forms of identity all of which will eventually fall away to make way for new ones. - @peraltastacy on Instagram
