Three months ago today, I spent my first night alone in my new house. It was one of the most difficult days that I can remember. I spent hours in the fetal position on my couch, weeping, grieving, feeling all the fears I’d been imagining for months. In the moments when I was able to calm my emotional outbreaks, I looked around my mostly unpacked, empty house and cycle back into sadness, anxiety, doubt. I remember a friend telling me, “you’re gonna need to sit in this pain, man—that’s the only way through—sit here and feel it, all of it.” 🙏🏼 What I didn’t know then was that harder days were ahead—days when I’d fall prey to believing the words of critics that I was selfish and weak, that I was spineless, that I was ruining my children’s lives, that I wasn’t “being a man,” that I was sick and misguided, that God was not with me. And too, that a day would come when I’d have to cut off communication with members of my own family. I sat in all of that pain, that sadness, that fear... 🙏🏼 And guess what? I’ve survived every hard day. In fact, I’ve even thrived on a couple of those days. I have no secret, no magic wisdom, no advice. Every step forward in this journey has hurt. Every step forward has been scary. Every step forward has been hard on somebody I love deeply. Every step forward has required grace, self care, empathy, and faith. 🙏🏼 But despite all of the difficult days or maybe because of them, I’m more present than I’ve been in years. I’m more comfortable in my skin than I have ever felt. I’m kinder, to myself and to everybody else. I’m not afraid of putting up boundaries and I’m no longer inclined to take other people’s boundaries personal. I have moments when I feel joy and freedom and hope. And there’s been at least 2 moments in the last 3 months when I swear I caught a glimpse of God... everything is not perfect, but everything is okay—some things are more than okay. 🙏🏼 I know hard days are still ahead. But I also know that fear lies, that I can do really difficult things and be okay, that I do not owe one damn thing to my critics no matter who they are, and that nothing and/or nobody can separate me from God’s love and God’s acceptance. - @matthewpaulturner on Instagram
