Saddened to hear of the passing of Philippe Daverio. I had the great pleasure of photographing him for #WeAreDandy book with @nattyadams in 2016. Accompanied by @kellfire, we visited him at his cavernous home in Milan, filled with books, art, papers, Egyptian rolling papers, and inspiration everywhere. The lead image is how I recall my first glimpses of him, but it’s a bit of a lie: I didn’t feel right about pulling out my camera at his front door before I had properly met him, so when we were saying our goodbyes I coaxed him for a few last frames. To me it has the same energy—his mischievous bright smile. ✨ Philippe Daverio was a well known Italian art critic, historian, TV personality, and—of course—great dandy. I am the luckiest dude in the world because I was blessed with the gift of obesity when I was a child. - I spent my childhood overweight, and transitioned that into an obese 20 year old, diagnosed with pre-hypertension and was told to consider blood pressure medication. - I was called fatso for the first time on the playground in 3rd grade after my family moved to a new town. - I hit rock bottom in college, at 265 pounds with a 42 inch waist, and the ability to break out in a sweat and become very winded just from going upstairs. - This happened for me, and I am grateful for it. - This experience taught me more about the darkness and light of humanity, the powerlessness and powerfulness that I am capable of, and the unique experience that has given me a the gift of being reborn, to show others what is possible for their own lives. - I resisted life for years. And when I began to embrace it, it became my greatest teacher and best friend. - Part of everything good in me comes from that fat kid. - So grateful. - @mattletten on Instagram
