Adopted!!!! Although these Spanish black turkeys were with us for a short time, I must say, We enjoyed having them and learned a lot! I saw that the snood-which is that cone shaped protrusion above their beaks can changed shape. When the males get excited, the snood flattens and hangs long and loose over their beaks. When they are relaxed, it draws in and shortens into a small wrinkled pyramid! This group or “rafter” of turkeys had the sweetest dispositions. We are happy to report that they have all been adopted together and will be living out their days on a farm on the east end if Long Island. This is our Black Copper Maran. Shes about 5 months old. She has black eyes & super fluffy feet. She sat next to me while she preened herself, knowing Id protect her against the boys, I suppose. She just started laying a few days ago & experienced a cloacal prolapse, where the cloaca turns inside out through the vent. It sort of righted itself as we noticed it & grabbed her. We did an inspection, cleaned up her backend, & applied a bit of preparation H to the vent area to soothe it and calm her. (Yay for a chicken first aid kit!) We kept her inside that night & she plopped out a shell-less egg. She had a bit of food and water and then got to go back outside with her friends. This is a comparison photo based on a recent post from @georgiepurcell. The chicken on the left was saved from the chicken meat industry and is pictured at 2 weeks old. Sadly, these chickens are pumped with hormones so that at 8 weeks old they will be big enough to slaughter. Unfortunately, even when rescued, these chickens only have 1-3 year life expectancy due to how quick their tiny bodies grow. This is Sylvia- we all have serious hair envy 😂The gorgeous Sylvia came in to see Dr Juliet Brown after being bitten by a dog. Juliet started by examining Sylvia to ensure that all of her vital signs were normal and that there wasn’t anything to serious going on. She found a wound on Sylvias back that was open, sore and tender. Besides the obvious wound Sylvia was a very happy healthy girl which was a huge relief. She was admitted to hospital for pain relief, antibiotics and a surgical procedure to repair the wound. Sylvias anaesthetic and surgery went perfectly and she is now recovering at home with her mum. Here she is showing off her fancy new accessory to stop her from pecking at her stitches. Tonight will be the last night of this horrific ceremony that takes place in the name of religion. Hundreds of adults and children gathered and pressed up against each other are standing in blood and feces that run through the streets and in to our gutters, sewers and eventually waterways. Don’t ask me why I look like I’m auditioning for America’s Next Top Chicken Model 😆 This is just the best photo I have with Coal, my sweet silkie chickie who passed away recently. ⁣💔⁣⁣ ⁣ She was my first chick and had the sweetest personality. That’s what has surprised me the most: how different each chicken’s personality is.⁣ (Hubby affectionately referred to her as “the plague doctor” because of how she looked, and also her anti-social little personality. She was often off on her own, doing weird things, but she always ran over to me for a snuggle).⁣ ⁣ I haven’t been talking about my chickens as much because we have had too many sad stories to tell recently. you guys 😂 I cannot stop laughing. I was trying to take a selfie with three Silkies by myself (can you believe my family isn’t interested in being my personal chicken photographer??) and I usually just snap as many as I can and hope one turns out. Wrangling one chicken for a shot is hard enough, but three? Impossible. But then I saw this outtake I must have taken before I smiled and it looks like some ridiculous editorial magazine shoot and I laughed so hard.
