I always find myself thinking about the feeling of naivety, how everything feels so simple and confusing at that first moment of discovery, when you react from just your gut and the energy this creates. I think this has to be the most valuable and sensitive state of mind and something so important to hold onto. In July 2018, I found myself in Floresti, Transylvania on a project following around a youth orchestra , that were performing across Romania. I remember the first time I saw a tree die before my eyes. I was eight. It was a gumtree in the front yard of my family’s river house. He had real Grandfather energy about him - a snow-white trunk with emerald green leaves, he was a silent witnesser to human evolution and the passing of time. He had seen a lot – I could tell. Sometimes when I was sad, I would sit at his trunk and water him with my tears. He would shade me from the sun whenever its rays scalded my skin, and his snarled roots would ground me if I felt overwhelmed. Eventually, he was deemed ‘dangerous’, and had to be cut down. At the age of 8, I didn’t really understand (at 28, I still don’t) but as the tree removalist sawed the bottom of his trunk, and used rope to tear his body to the ground, I sobbed uncontrollably. The destruction of nature still affects me in the same way today. Whether it’s a tree I’ve sat with or not, a part of me dies when I see nature destroyed. Human consciousness has become so disjointed and so disconnected that most of us don’t know how to be in nature and access the wisdom she holds for us. The difference between us modernized westerners and the indigenous people is that we have lost touch to our ancestry, linage, and connection to country. As urbanization continues to swallow up trees and cut people off from their natural surroundings I wonder where we draw the line? Ancient forests being looted for cheap timber, rain forests full of sacred plants burnt to support rampant capitalism, and 800-year-old sacred sites bulldozed for freeways that only save 4 minutes of travel time. In a time where technology allows us to be more ‘connected’ than ever before, I believe we have never been more disconnected. Real medicine is needed to cure us of our ails, and it’s not the kind of medicine that is manufactured in a laboratory. Today I am grateful for my connection to Mother and all of her plant teachers. I am grateful for the community that surrounds me, for the land we sit on, honour and fight to protect. I am grateful for our First Nations People, for their connection to country and spirit, and the way they continue to fight colonialism and educate us. Thank you. - @demiileeee on Instagram

Before he came to Amazon Shelter Our Tapir, Frank was kept in a small cage at a live music venue and restaurant. Loud music played most of the night and many people came to take pictures with flashing cameras. He arrived here very thin and subdued and for the past year and a half we have helped him to gain weight and confidence. He now has a large area to roam around in and fresh leaves and vegetables every day. In the future we would like to find Frank a female to pair with and it is our goal to pioneer one of the first Tapir releases in the wild. Domingo de “echavaineo”: Mentalmente aquí pero estoy en la oficina 🤣 Cuando estuvimos en Constanza nos alojamos en @lacasitadelarroyo es un hospedaje tan confortable y acogedor que solamente dan ganas sentarte a existir. #legit Esta casa se encuentra próximo a la Reserva Científica de Ebano Verde, por lo que podrán imaginarse el aire puro que se respira allí. Detrás de la casa hay un arroyo que sirve de audio terapia durante la estadía 😍 Esta villa tiene una capacidad para 16 personas, donde pueden repartirse cómodamente en sus 5 habitaciones. Cuenta con una cocina totalmente equipada, terraza con Jacuzzi, bbq, estar familiar con chimenea y área de juegos. 👌🏽 Este espacio lo recomiendo para familias y grupos grandes. ¡Vale totalmente la pena! The last few days have been weird. I’m just going to hang that out there. A beautiful soul said to me yesterday during a mutual let down moment...”I feel like I’m floating and I don’t know where I get to anchor.” The most appropriate description for the world we are living in at the moment. Summer was so lovely and we were able to shake a bit of the monumental stress from the last six months, but now we are back to fear mode again. To be honest...I fucking hate it. Each day I wake up and think “is this the day they’re going to tell me to close again”. I walk around thinking how will we get through this....all the time. I’m not sleeping nor am I truly living. At approximately 1pm on Sunday, July 22, 2018, Dexter the Peacock passed away in his favorite human’s arms. His passing was sudden and unexpected. Attempts were made to save him, but his doctor confirmed that nothing could have been done to alter his fate. Dexter defied stereotypes and brought joy and magic to all who encountered him. It was an honor to know him and a privilege to share this life journey with him. He never let fame, adoration or his prodigious number of followers on social media inflate his ego, and he loved working the camera with grace and humility. He is survived by his sisters, Eva (pictured here) and Zsa Zsa, and by all the humans who loved him. A senhora cuidou de uma casa com 10 filhos, muitos netos e bisnetos e ainda adotou aqueles que encontraram acolhimento na boa conversa e no carinho da comida que a senhora preparava pra demonstrar afeto. A senhora aceitou todo mundo do jeito que é. Nascida em 1934 e com a capacidade de evoluir os pensamentos pra não fazer menos de ninguém, pra não guardar rancor e pra viver se transformando e evoluindo junto com aqueles que amava. Talvez a vida seja isso e a senhora sabia exatamente como viver. A senhora nunca foi de dar muita lição de moral. Mas tudo que a gente aprendeu foi olhando a senhora fazer. Não depender de ninguém, mas sempre voltar pra cuidar uns dos outros. Era assim lá em casa. A casa podia andar muitos dias mais vazia, mas bastava qualquer sinal da senhora pra gente encher a sala, agilizar o almoço, dar boas risadas e fazer o Everaldo tocar o violão por horas pra gente cantar Roberto Carlos. Lá em casa sempre foi cheio de mulheres. Não tem nenhuma que não seja tão forte quanto a senhora foi até o último segundo que pôde. He had a difficult time getting enough food in his system as a kitten, experiencing Fading kitten syndrome, but his foster mom, @fosterkittys , nurtured him with a lot of love and care, and he was able to grow into the wonderful cat he is now. 😻 Phin adapts to his condition by walking with his paws a bit wider, leaning against the wall for support, and using claws to climb up and down things. A final wonderful gathering for Day 3 of DomestiCITY: A Roof Over Our Heads - Rethinking Housing, Eliminating Homelessness. A performance by two piece band Clickbait set the scene, which comprised duo musicians Sofia Woods and Sarah Bock singing about 10 years in their home, with its non-traditional living arrangements. Next was a conversation between Gail Middleton - Better Together Housing project, Kate Rose @qsuperfund and Ingrid Burkett of the Yunus Social Business Centre at Griffith University. A serious discussion of the ever-increasing numbers of women who are, or are at-risk of, homelessness and housing insecurity, as well as alook at some of the innovative models that are responding to the need for community-oriented affordable living for older women. Plus a call-to action to all women to start thinking about how their future can be ensured, and what we can do today to make sure we are all safe and secure in our housing.
