Matthias Weischer’s solo exhibition ‘Bühne’ will be on view at the @drentsmuseumassen, the Netherlands, from November 1, 2020 until March 28, 2021. Weischer’s work plays on our sense of space. His interiors and landscapes are a little skewed, evoking an almost theatrical scene where materiality, colour and texture feature as the leads. First off — Deepest thanks to everyone who picked up a 7 flexi on Monday. . Adam and I were blown away at the response. We spent all afternoon getting those packed up and out the door before 5PM and have been excited to see images showing up this week on places like Instagram and Twitter. Altogether, through your generosity, after some personal matching and utilizing a work donation program we were able to raise $1300 for My Block, My Hood, My City. . Last night, the song from that flexi single became available to everyone via streaming services.  . Living Up To Let You Down is the first song we’re sharing from an album called “Figure”. This record will be released on September 18th by Triple Crown Records US, Big Scary Monsters UK/EU and Stiff Slack JPN.  . It was made in various studios throughout Chicago but mostly in one that was built from scratch by the two primary engineers, Matthew Jordan and Adam Beck (who also drums) which we then filled to the brim with gear. We wrangled additional friends in Andrew Emil and Mark Michalik for some extra performance and engineering input. It was then mixed by longtime friend Jason Cupp in St Louis and finally mastered at the Mastering Palace in NY by David Kutch. Artwork was hand assembled by Lynette Sage and then laid out to perfection by Andy Hendricks. . If you received a flexi you’ll notice the unique artwork on each of the accompanying hang tags. Each piece was taken from the book in which a majority of the collage work from the forthcoming LP was assembled. If you have one of those cards, you have a piece of the record. . “Figure” was a long work in process — and there is still a lot of work to do. Personally, creatively, emotionally, confessionally, collaboratively. I look forward to sharing more of that journey over the coming weeks. I paint to keep my head together,” Moses Ernest Tolliver once said to Lee Kogan. He was speaking in reference to a difficult period following an accident that permanently damaged his legs, leaving him unable to walk. Tolliver painted occasionally prior to the accident but was extraordinarily prolific after losing his freedom of movement. Tolliver’s art, despite his condition, rarely shows frustration or anger. In fact, his newfound sedentariness eventually brought people to him, creating opportunities for discussion, friendship, and commerce. One can certainly look at Tolliver’s work through the prism of the African American yard show tradition. Indeed, the first works, executed in the late 1960s, were hung from trees and attached to the fence around his yard, intentionally visible to his neighbors and members of the community. He also painted on roots, branches and other surfaces. After the accident, Tolliver’s paintings were mostly relegated to his house which functioned as a makeshift gallery before joining public and private collections. Hello! I am now accepting commission again! The above slides show the general information but here is a full detailed explanation of the process and fees. Full length portraits are £50 per person, bust portraits are £40 per person, and pets are between £30-£40 depending on size. As my work is all hand drawn there are now additional charges for the inclusion of heavily patterned clothing or heavily tattooed people but this is worked out on a case by case basis. I work from photographs and require photos of the subject’s face and hairstyle, besides that I can generally work from descriptions of outfits, poses, heights etc. so I do not require a photo of exactly what you’d like drawn. Upon agreement of budget I require payment upfront (usually through Etsy, but other options are available) and for all necessary photos to be emailed to me. I generally work in a three part structure; I create a sketch of the portrait and as you for feedback, I begin working on the final piece and get feedback, then I send a final digital scan to get final confirmation before posting the original to you. It is important that everything you want included is stated at the sketch stage as the way I work doesn’t allow me to erase and alter things when they’re already drawn. The process should take between 3 and 4 months assuming prompt communication but in some circumstances things can overrun. If you need the illustration by a specific date it is important that you let me know at the start of the process so I can let you know whether or not it is achievable, and in certain circumstances an additional fee may be required to make a rush order. I’d advise tracked and insured shipping for all commissions as if you opt for standard shipping I’ll be unable to offer a refund or replacement. I was not taking the announcement of prolonged lockdown really well yesterday. To my fellow Victorians, you know what I mean. To those who are not familiar, Victoria has one of the strictest COVID-19 restriction in the world. I am not posting this to complain or criticise what the government is doing as I am not qualified to assess the policy. But they have been difficult. I am frustrated to have to cancel my wedding ceremony for the second time. At the moment no wedding is allowed (not even signing the legal paper is allowed) until 26 October. We have made so many compromises but at the moment it is prohibited. I know many others who are struggling with loneliness, missed milestones, missing education experience, graduation, finding work during this time. I know I am not alone in feeling frustrated about the whole matter. Thank you to friends who have reached out and showed support. It is not an easy thing to understand and sympathise with, so I really appreciate all the support, words of encouragements and virtual hugs. ❤️ God is good. He is. He understands more than I do. He has reasons that I cannot understand. Because of that I will be fine, but I will need time to get there. It has been a long night, but mornings will come. Stay strong and sending love to you. NU TE ZIEN — Lang werd gedacht dat het allereerste abstracte kunstwerk uit 1911/1914 kwam (🇬🇧 below). Pas veel later bleek dat de Zweedse kunstenaar Hilma af Klint (Solna, 1862) al in 1906 een werk maakte dat niet representatief of figuratief was, zonder enige herkenbare verwijzingen naar de fysieke wereld. Af Klint maakte in haar leven meer dan 1000 schilderijen en talloze tekeningen die wij nu abstract zouden noemen. Waarom werd haar werk dan pas veel later bekend? Af Klint had in haar testament op laten nemen dat haar werken in deze categorie pas twintig jaar na haar dood (ze stief in 1944) getoond mochten worden omdat ze geloofde dat de wereld er nog niet klaar voor was. Haar representatieve landschappen en portretten stelde ze wel al tentoon. Af Klint heeft zichzelf bovendien nooit concreet uitgesproken als abstracte kunstenaar. Uiteindelijk kwam het abstracte werk zelfs pas in 1986 weer aan het licht, waarna het langzaam ontdekt werd. In 2013 werd in het Moderna Museet in Stockholm een groot retrospectief georganiseerd van haar werk en in 2018 opende ook het Guggenheim in New York een solotentoonstelling over af Klint. Het werk van Af Klint wordt soms afgedaan als zweverig en occult omdat ze zich liet inspireren door de spirituele bewegingen uit haar tijd, zoals spiritisme, theosofie en antroposofie. Dat is onterecht, want haar tijdgenoten Kandinsky, Mondriaan en Malevich deelden deze inspiratiebronnen; Mondriaan onderhield bijvoorbeeld - net als Af Klint - een intensieve briefwisseling met de Oostenrijkse esotericus Rudolf Steiner. Af Klint was overigens onderdeel van de eerste lichting vrouwen in Zweden die naar de kunstacademie ging. “Scared Stiff”, 1970 So gutted to see the Tate and three major museums in the U.S. cancel the massive Guston retrospective that was meant to open next summer. It’s particularly frustrating to see the Tate Modern cancel out of a supposed sense of moral concern, while at the same time laying off 300 people in the middle of a pandemic. It shows a lack of priorities and ultimately, considering this was an attempt to salvage their image, just makes them look even worse. If that was truly the concern then there are some genuinely problematic painters whose works still hang in museums. Emile Nolde was actually a Nazi and Gauguin’s paintings, which “exoticise” and sexualise young Tahitian girls can still be seen by the public. Not to mention the fact that the Tate has a blockbuster Picasso exhibition every few years (if you really want to talk about problematic artists and imagery). To target Guston, a committed anti-racist and socialist, who proved so through his life and his work, is such a misfire. There could not be a more appropriate time to see Guston’s work than now and these institutions have really blown their chance to hold an intelligent exhibition that asks for accountability, both of itself and its audience. So who are you actually protecting? Guston 4ever. By sharing with the reader that Garner worked for some time in the Horticultural Department at Parks and Recreation -a small and necessary fact- the poet opens us up to the possibility “perhaps, that with his very large hands, perhaps, in all likelihood, he put gently into the earth some plants” which grow, provide shelter, beautify, convert sunlight, and make it “easier for us to breathe.” Gay’s poem both questions our knowledge of real world facts and leads us to imagine other possibilities. Hey everyone! Haven’t posted anything for a while, as sometimes it takes half a year (or more) for a project to be released in public. This is also the case for the work I did for @itsapassionthing. I’m finally able to share with you one of my favourite projects of the last year - “Passion Is A Dancer” blanket. The brief was to make something about “passion” so I took some inspiration from both my modest experience in Tango dancing and “corrida de toros” (Spanish style bullfighting). Passion can be many things, but these two definitely involve some powerful emotions. Ive seen Mr. Brown in the neighborhood since my family moved nearby in 2005. I moved to Harlem in 2000 but lived on 147th. In 2005 we moved downtown a bit. And even tho it was approximately a 10 block move it meant a half a mile of shifts creating a ripple of change in my food buying, view, access, neighborhood/neighbors etc 🖤 On one of my outdoor days during quarantine I was brave enough (also deprived of adult conversation) that I approached Mr. Brown. Ive seen him and his cute dog a couple times since weve moved to the area, sometimes walking his dog sometimes in front of his home on the porch or seated below the staircase. I wanted to learn more about him. He was with his dog as usually and I used the dog as my point of engagement. 🖤 I asked if I could pet his baby and learned his Yorkies name was Brownie and she was 8 years young. I also learned his name is Mr. Brown and hes owned and lived in his #Harlem #brownstone for 47 years. Hes serious about his home and the way folks treat their community. During one of my visits to the front of his home he barked at two food delivery men for riding their bikes on the sidewalk. Hes a serious #homeowner and #american . Hes also private and does not care about social media.
