I used to shoot a lot of peel-apart polaroids when I was in school. I loved the deep blacks and murky colors I could pull out of the film. When the stock was discontinued I felt a deep loss. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to make images that had those specific tones again, tones that I felt were so connected to my innate way of seeing. It wasn’t until this project, The Bay of Cadiz, that I felt like I was able to capture colors in that exact way again. I’m constantly surprised by how flexible 16mm film is. I never feel limited by the medium, only my ability to cook up a formula that will give me what I’m searching for. Getting it there is always such a joy. A huge thanks to everyone who made this happen! CK: I saw rivers of people flowing through urban canyons, endless rows of modernist buildings that scraped the clouds like teeth. In summer, a glowing red dome of air pollution covered the entire city. There were less cars then, but I didn’t learn to ride a bicycle because the traffic was too dangerous. NYC looked like the 1950s TV show “The Honeymooners.” It was a more middle- class society. People had small apartments and modest furnishings and weren’t ashamed of that. People felt more solidarity because the horrors of WWII were still recent history. Governments attacked aristocracy by redistributing wealth, for example the year I was born, the top federal tax rate was 91%, inconceivable today. I met people from around the world, and became cosmopolitan. I was a wanted, loved child and spent much of my childhood reading. I got into music from listening to my mother’s collection of rock records. I moved to NYC in the summer of 83 and the first night I arrived I paid $2, which was about all I had, to squeeze up to the front of the Ritz stage to catch every inch of Madonna and her two backup dancers doing Lucky Star, Borderline and all my favorites. What a welcome to New York!! Over the years Ive been invited to work on 5 or 6 of her extraordinary tours, many videos, photo shoots and any number of other projects. Well, shes now the biggest-selling female recording artist of all time, and while the tours have gotten a bit bigger over the years, Im still transported back to a more innocent time whenever shes in my ear. 新曲のことを考えながら、ふら〜っとお店に入り鳥そばを注文した。 ずっと家にいると新しいアイディアが浮かばなくなるので、散歩しながら考えることも多い。 運ばれてきた冷たい麺をちゅるっとすすると、一気に汗がひいていった。そして同時に 「ヤバい！！この店現金のみだ！！」と気付いた。 心拍数が跳ね上がった。 近頃、電子マネーに頼りすぎて現金を持ち歩いていなかったのと、曲のことを考えてぼーっとしていたダブルパンチ。 正直にお店に相談すると、スタッフの女性が 「LINE Payで私に振り込んでくれたら、現金で払いましょうか」 と提案してくれた。 神様が現れたと思った。 LINE Payを使うには友達登録をしなければならず、仕事中の彼女は見ず知らずの私と連絡を交換した上に決済させてくれると言う。 私は「本当に申し訳ありません」「本当にありがとうございます」と何度も頭を下げて家に帰った。 その夜、彼女からLINEでメッセージが届いた。 「あの、SEKAI NO OWARIのSaoriさんですか？」 10年音楽をやってきて、一番恥ずかしいバレ方だと思った。 「ずっと応援してます！」 と言って下さったので、 「次は必ず現金を持参して伺います」 と返信しました。 - @saori_fujisaki on Instagram

Let’s go back to the beginning. Tell us a little bit about your story. What was it like growing up in NYC and how did you get into music? I saw rivers of people flowing through urban canyons, endless rows of modernist buildings that scraped the clouds like teeth. In summer, a glowing red dome of air pollution covered the entire city. There were less cars then, but I didn’t learn to ride a bicycle because the traffic was too dangerous. NYC looked like the 1950s TV show “The Honeymooners.” It was a more middle-class society. People had small apartments and modest furnishings and weren’t ashamed of that. People felt more solidarity because the horrors of WWII were still recent history. Governments attacked aristocracy by redistributing wealth, for example the year I was born, the top federal tax rate was 91%, inconceivable today. I met people from around the world, and became cosmopolitan. I was a wanted, loved child and spent much of my childhood reading. Our next venture into the world of fairytales was in 2003 with Rapunzel. After Cinderella we realised the enormous and exciting possibilities a retelling of a classic can offer. We set this one in the 1970s and moved Rapunzel into a high rise tower block. A broken lift results in her aunt’s unusual method of arriving home! We wanted to explore an alternative storyline for Rapunzel, one were she isn’t ‘rescued’ by the typical ’hero’! In our version Rapunzel finds her own way in the world and ‘rescues’ herself by opening her own business making wigs with all that hair! I also enjoyed setting the story in the 70s as I was able to pay homage to some of my favourite stars! Check out her record collection!
