Going from only weightlifting for years, to getting hurt, to back into fitness classes most days of the week, was so tough. I HATED finishing workouts last, I hated not being able to do the things everyone else was doing. I would cry after some classes because i was so mad at my incapable body lmao. I felt so embarrassed and useless because I’ve been training for almost a decade, i have a half-decent amount of muscle, i *should* be able to do these things, right? Hmm well I still mostly finish last, and I’m doing regular jump rope here (I still don’t have my double-unders back because I literally don’t care to practice them lmao) etc...but I’ve finally been able to embrace that getting hung up on what we think we “should” still be able to do is an absolute fucking waste of energy. All we have is our right here and right now. For me, I lost a lot of strength from injury (and then again from lockdown) & that is the only reality that matters—no amount of “I should be able to” is gonna change that weight on the bar or change your aerobic capacity or whatever lmao. Anyway, if you’re there, take it from someone on the other side: accept it. Too bad. Big whoop. COMPLETE LEG WORKOUT ‼️‼️ I had a realllyyy busy day this day, so I decided to hit full legs hard with these 2 circuits. All starts from high falling position. 2 sets 1 rep 20lbs 1 rep 30lbs 1 rep 20lbs 1 unloaded 75s between runs and about 3 mins between sets. He was flying. I love this little wave loading during a more strength focused cycle. I dont like to go much heavier than this with the loading but its fun to see what we get out of playing with it for a singular rep per set. We get weekly calls from people looking to “use” the gym. We’re not a gym in that sense though. We’re a coaching facility. You may have never thought about it, but having a coach, opposed to just a gym has a lot of benefits. Having a plan in place helps you stick with the habit, see progress and understand the direction you’re headed. Do you just show up to the gym and do the few moves you remember from high school and hit a couple of the machines that you know how to use? We get to know you, and learn when to push you or when to ease up. We teach you how to move, how to master the techniques and how to listen to your body. Many people that start here think every workout must be brutally hard. This can lead to skipping workouts when there isn’t someone in their corner saying it’s okay, or perhaps even smarter to back off. Normal gyms are weird. People are wearing headphones, watching each other in mirrors and no one really interacts. It’s strange. I laugh when people come in and tell me they don’t like gyms... People here will remember your name, say hi and even notice if you haven’t showed up in a while. There’s one goal that unites us all here: we want to get better. That creates a cool place, a place that is so much more than a gym. Gyms are just places that have weights and equipment you can use. Butterfly pre-requisites & drills to test tension and timing. CrossFit/weightlifting/gymnastics...all the rage these days! Often we caught up in numbers, times, RX, etc. the beauty of being able to do this LONG TERM comes down to intent and understanding of quality movement. It took me a while to understand all these thing FULLY. When I got pregnant it was hard to let go because I worked so hard for these skills in all three entities. But now, I am actually do less, but it’s quality work and I feel better and I’m still progressing. Not every day is sunshine and rainbows, but I also am now able to let it roll and move on with my days. I’m decent at the gymnastics things. So, every so often I force myself to try new things from @thegymnasticscourse because @chuckbennington always says cool things that make me want to try them. Video 1: behind the neck pull ups in an arch. Video 2: the first attempt to butterfly pull up on rings. My brain and body immediately wanted to kip 😂 Video 3: still weird but I was a bit more aware and by the last 5-7 I got it better. I know how to butterfly my pull ups. 3 Things You Need 3️⃣ . There are a plethora of ways to train to reach your goals. And the truth is, as long as you are consistent with your training, have a handle on your diet, and find ways to optimize recovery, you’re more than likely going to reach them. . However, there are a three things that will always be beneficial adding into that training program of yours. . 1️⃣ Unilateral work 2️⃣ Lateral work 3️⃣ Plyometric work . Regardless of whether you are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, you can benefit greatly from implementing all three of these. . Why? . Unilateral training: helps correct imbalances and attack weaknesses, applies to human everyday movement, decreases injury risks, and utilizes core stabilization. . Lateral training: prevents injury (many lower body injuries in sports and everyday life can occur during a lateral movement. This builds strength, stabilization and sturdy joints in those movements), balance and coordination, and gets you outside of the general forward, standing, sitting styles of training. . Plyometric work: improve power and explosiveness, can increase strength and speed, and teaches us to properly decelerate. . 🟡Ankle Mobility Routine🟡 • 🤓Research: you need about 10 degrees of ankle dorsiflexion for normal mechanics! ❗️If you are a regular gym goer, weightlifter, crossfitter or just someone who likes squatting you’ll need 30-40 degrees. • 🦵🏼Limited dorsiflexion is one of the major issues that we can see in the gym floor. • ✅How can you screen it if you have any limitations in your ankle — with the ‘5 inches wall test’ that you can find in the first video. • ➡️The exercises that can help if you are having any issues with your ankle. • 1️⃣Banded joint mobilisation (if you are feeling any impingement in the front of your ankle — make sure to place the band on your talus bone — low position) 2️⃣Goblet squat 3️⃣Bench ankle mobility 4️⃣Shrimp squat 5️⃣Soft tissue mobilisation (this video is 2x faster than the original one — go very slow on this one and if you find any spot which is a bit painful just sit on it fora couple of seconds) • ⏰It doesn’t take so much out of your time, so if you’re having issues with your ankle mobility and it doesn’t let you go down into a deep squat with a proper form, then give these exercises a go (2-3 exercise/day or session). Why doesnt Sparta measure right and left limbs separately on the Jump Scan?⠀ ⠀ Research specifically assessing the reliability of right and left forces measured separately from a vertical jump has found poor agreement from trial to trial as well as between phases (concentric, eccentric, etc) of the jump (2). The specificity of reliability reminds us that it is critical to examine reliability in detail. Just because force plates are reliable instruments and the vertical jump is a reliable test we cannot assume that any combination of the two is inherently accurate and trustworthy.⠀ ⠀ The Jump Scan and resulting Movement Signature are utilized as a global measure of dynamic movement. The variables Load, Explode, and Drive are derived from a combination of force and time, which are the two qualities that underpin all human movement. Sparta has not given up the pursuit of identifying reliable and valid measures of dynamic movement through a unilateral lens. So a rhino and a giraffe walk into a gym... This past weekend @jcummings512 and I did the @caffeineandkilos Battle Royale. 30 minutes of pure fitness! We managed to pull out a win and earn $1000. Jenn isn’t the biggest fan of burpees or thrusters but she did what needed to be done and was able to keep up with me for the whole workout. Then I hit a big power clean at 357 lbs and she stepped up and hit an equally, if not more, impressive 202 lb power clean. • Some days things don’t go well. Sometimes they do. Saturday was a great day for us. He doesn’t know I’ve written this post, and certainly doesn’t expect it, but it’s been well over a month now I’ve been working with @hallmightyone now, and the mental/physical changes have been overwhelming. Firstly, for around 3 years I tracked my food religiously, constantly stressing about hitting a specific caloric in-take each day, weighing every single piece of food or sauce, eating the same foods, and never wanting/avoiding eating out in fear of not being able to track food, yet in the last month, we’ve built myself up to longer weighing or tracking my food. Secondly, my performance has not only developed and improved, but before my strength had been very inconsistent, with a noticeable difference as of late with how my weightlifting has been improving but most of all consistent. Let’s talk hip mobility! If you’re sitting at a desk all day, you should be working on your hip mobility. Poor hip mobility can contribute to issues like lower back pain, knee problems, tight hamstrings, not being able to squat easily and so much more…⁣ ⁣ Your hips are the center of movement for your body, so the healthier and less restricted your hips become, the more potential your body has for strength, power, and athleticism. ⁣ ⁣ Here are some of my favourite hip mobility exercises. I like to incorporate some of these moves in my warm up before a lower body workout to prime my body for exercise, or on a rest day. ⁣ ⁣ 1. World’s greatest stretch - this stretch is true to its name. Glide your elbow from your knee to your ankle to place extra emphasis on the hips. Rotate your back mid-back (T-spine) as you try to open your chest to the sky. ⁣ 2. 90/90 hip switches - Many people externally rotate their hips but forget to internally rotate them. Push both your knees into the ground to get the benefits! Transition slowly and in control. ⁣ 3. Supine 90/90 hip switches. Again, push your knees into the ground, moving in control, and keeping your shoulders pinned to the ground. ⁣ 4. Quadruped alternating straight leg groaners. A good glute activator as well. ⁣Extend one leg at a time to the side and sit your hips back onto your heels. 5. Deep squat⁣ - squat down as low as you can keeping your chest up and shift side to side to open those hips up. 6. Straight leg abduction reaches⁣ - hold a high plank and sweep one leg at a time forward keeping it straight. Feel the rotation at the hip. 7. Cossack squats⁣ - shift your weight side to side staying low. 8. Butterfly stretch⁣ - feet together, knees bent, press your elbows into your knees for a deeper stretch! ⁣ Give these a try and let me know what you think! Going to debrief a few of the events from last weekend for you and just a few of my thoughts! We Vlogged behind the scenes all weekend (which was a bit stressful but @_patrickoconnell made it happen) so make sure to click the link in my bio to see a more in depth view of my thoughts of the weekend! Let’s get started... Event 1: friendly Fran This started the weekend with a bang. I prefer to ease in with a long run, swim or maybe bike 😂 not straight pedal to the metal full throttle go time. This was a 3rd round workout. It was deceiving and it hurt. I had a plan. I stuck to my plan and then all of a sudden my plan went out the window. There wasn’t even time to decide it was time to grind. All of a sudden everything just kind of felt a little numb and things start closing in. These are my least favorite kind of workouts. These are the ones that sneak up and punch you in the face out of nowhere. The first round felt good, almost too good where I knew better. 2nd round the burn started to set in and 3rd round was survival. Happy with my effort and the improvement of my thrusters with a heavier load. Still work to do and probably need to learn to find that dark place a bit more in training 💀. All in all the electric atmosphere of my friends and family at @cfp.fitness pulled me through and I’m so thankful for all their cheers! BIGGEST FACTORS IN FINGER STRENGTH! 💪🔥💪 Most climbers are pretty obsessed about finger strength. We also know it has a big impact on climbing, whether bouldering, sport climbing or trad climbing. In addition, we all very aware that it’s not always easy to make progress consistently over the years! Many of the clients we work with find that a couple of years of finger strength gains come quickly as they either boulder more or they take their steps in training it systematically. As we’ve assessed and worked with so many climbers of all walks of life over the years, we’ve really come to see some strong patterns associated with either excessively strong fingers or excessively weak ones! Lets have a look at some of the BIG areas that affect the extremes of physiology. Before you drive in, please remember were talking about real outliers of strength here! These observations are based around the far end of the scale either end and the most important thing in this case is to reflect on whether you think your own situation may mirror any of the scenarios below.... could it impact choices going forward? 🌪Too much going on in your life This one can be termed as allostatic load. We see this issue every single week!! Its in our DMs, on social media comments and in emails from inquiring climbers. Do NOT expect to jam your life with stress, lack of sleep, a 24-7 lifestyle and partying and be really strong. It doesnt work. 🥘 Eat well – High Energy Availability One pattern we have observed over the years is that climbers who spend long periods of time in calorie deficit, with very low body fat percentages really struggle to make significant, lasting strength gains. Those climbers are not coming through the long-term with excessively strong fingers or upper bodies. Yes, they can create the effect of high strength-to-weight (STW) by moderating body composition, but in the long run, it’s setting up any athlete for sub-optimal gains in strength. A few little bits from the last week of training 🔷 Flare to flag - still a work in progress, some days it’s easy some days it’s not. Need to focus on keeping tension in the legs when landing the flag 🔷 First time doing Inlocates without feet on the floor, felt surprisingly good. A bit of a way to deadlift that way to flag but I’ll get there eventually. I was surprised that I could do this on both sides pretty comfortably. The right is definitely stronger but my left side is starting to get stronger finally. 🔷 Double straddle 90 degree HSPUs off the floor, been a long time since I’ve done doubles and this was on a deload session so pretty happy with the progress there. 🔷 And finally my left side is getting solid with flag again, even enables me to start doing some 1.5 arm switches on it. TUDO ia bem... até que! “vou competir” e tudo foi embora...a sua felicidade se foi. Seus amigos não estão lá, a saúde virou dor...a comunidade se foi...Coach só da treino chato. Bem vido a competição! Muito esforço e dedicação e qq falha te afunda. Quem disse que pra ser “bom” tem que competir? As merdas das planilhas de um Coach que não sabe quem você é! Torneios feitos para encher o rabo de $ estão acabando com o que você e eu tínhamos. Pessoas se afastando por NADA...dando $ para quem nunca ligou para nós. Atleta não é melhor nem pior...é diferente! Ser diferente custa caro! 99,9% não vão pagar essa conta. Parem de ver o IG com atletas e olha seu parceiro, p/ seu Coach! Pergunta a dor dele, se precisa de algo. Esquece o TCB, o novinho do Insta, o Coach da planilha! Olha o cara do seu lado, pergunta como ele está! Ele (Coach ou não)vai mudar sua vida, seu dia, não o Fake do insta. A merda da competição e os parasitas das planilhas estão acabando com a gente, estão nos afastando e você pagando $ por isso. Admiro quem teve a vontade de competir... viu que não era legal e desistiu. Desejar é humano! Errar é humano! Ser infeliz para sustentar “status” não é humano. Por mais CrossFit de verdade! Competição no quadro branco e cerveja no final. Churrasco todo mês! Treinão na praia! Resenha porra! Estou de saco cheio das planilhas mágicas, atletas de Insta e afastamento das pessoas de verdade. BACK DAY🙌🏼 ⠀ Happy hump 🐪 day everyone. This year has me thinking about our abilities to stay on track in the face of chaos. I talked to a client earlier who said this year has destroyed their motivation and asked how I keep going. I told them I dont wait for motivation to arrive before I act. In other words, motivation cant be your only reason for doing something because it will always come and go. Discipline is more powerful. Its not easy, and it takes time, but I try to be very intentional and dedicated to my actions. I find that if I stay the course, its easier to just #keepgoing. ⠀ Workout: Straight sets 4 sets, 8-10 reps ⠀ 1️⃣Lat Pullups (woof its been a minute since I did these. 🔥Growth Moment🔥 This picture represents both physical and personal growth. Physical: My one arm lock off strength improving as a result of my limited strength training protocol over the course of this year. Some areas have dropped off with a lack of attention, but for the most part Im getting stronger overall and it felt easy to hover on one arm while talking to the group 💪😎 Personal: It took me about a year before I started teaching regular classes, and almost 5 years before my first solo workshop on the weekend. It was a great turnout, and Im proud of the growth in self-belief it took to teach it 🔥 This is often the harder work that nobody sees. You dont get likes on social media for internal work, but it is the real work that unlocks everything else 🔑 Growth is rarely linear. In my experience, there are so many opportunities to quit or lose faith in the process, but the rewards are there for those that stick it out 🙏 So please, dont lose faith. Keep growing, keep believing, and see just how far you can take things. For me, theres a big green Mountain I have to climb 😉🔥🔥🔥 P.S. Who is CrossFit Route1?⁣ ⁣• We are a fitness facility that has been in business for over 10 years, owned by family man @jared_monaco ⁣• We are located at 175 Central Street in Saugus,MA. I Miss Coaching. ⠀⠀ Zoom Sessions and Online Programming have been a great stopgap. They’ve provided a steady, invaluable resource for our clients in a time of uncertainty. But neither of these outlets have been able to scratch my coaching itch. ⠀ Programming and instruction aren’t the same as coaching and connecting. ⠀⠀ If I’ve learned anything over the past few weeks, it’s how deeply symbiotic coaching relationships are. There is something to be gained, as well as given in every coaching interaction. ⠀⠀ My daily coaching exchanges energize me and instill a sense of purpose in my occupation. They provide me inspiration for my courses, my writing, and my video content. In all honesty, I dont think I would be able to provide useful and relatable content if it werent for my day to day coaching schedule. ⠀⠀ In our current condition, its harder to come by the casual moments with clients that let you know you are on the right track. In between gasps for breath when the mother of three looks to you and says, I needed this today, and her face confirms it. When you witness the teenager who has struggled through an ACL rehab, confidently cut, run, jump, and bound with zero hesitation. ⠀⠀ Even while I am traveling for CFSC, separated from my clients at @bodybyboyle and @movementasmedicine, I’m still coaching. No matter the country or the language, Im accustomed to leading conversations, listening to coaches, and finding solutions. ⠀⠀ Although I would classify myself as an introvert, its become remarkably clear to me how much I gain from being apart of another coachs development process. Im energized by observing the “ah-ha moments and hearing about the positive impact our teaching has had on the coaches that weve served. Staying in hotels and flying around the world 30 weekends per year wouldnt be appealing without the energy transfer from student to teacher. ⠀⠀ From day one, my Why was To spread great coaching and its positive impact as far as possible. Unorthodox leg workout for you guys who wanna try some challenging plyo and fun movements. • It’s always fun to challenge yourself and switch things up. That’s what I tried doing with this one. • I wore a 16lbs weight vest through the entire workout but that’s not necessary unless you’re up for an extra fun challenge lol. Enjoy! • 1.Kneeling squat jumps to broad jump to bear crawl back pedal • Start in a kneeling position , explode from your hips into a deep squat, hold the dumbbells and do a squat jump, as soon as you land drop the dumbbells and do a broad jump. From the broad jump get into a bear crawl position and back pedal to the starting position and repeat. • 2.Plyo Bulgarian split squats to decline push up • Start with your back foot on a elevated surface, do a lunge and explode from the bottom of the lunge bringing your front foot to a high knee hop. Proceed by getting your hands to the ground and dropping your feet back to a push up stance, do a push up and explode back to the beginning position. • 3.Barbell kneeling jumps to squats • Start at a kneeling position with the barbell over your shoulders, from there explode through your hips into a deep squat. Stand up to finish your squat, kneel back down and repeat switching knees every time you kneel down. • 4.One leg RDL to one legged box jumps to pistol squats • Start in front a box keeping one leg off the floor at all times, hinge your hips back as your chest lowers towards the ground until your chest and leg are both parallel to the ground. Come back to starting position then do a one legged jump onto the box, then do a pistol squat keeping your heel down at all times and jump back to the ground trying to stabilize yourself the entire time on that same leg. • 5.Finisher: Squat jumps • Use a barbell on your shoulders, squat down, jump up at the top of the squat landing back in a squat (Tip:after the jump make sure you are absorbing the shock by squatting right away as your squatting make sure your heels are pressed to the ground so the pressure go to your knees). - @fitnessblazt on Instagram
