Teresa lives in Turkana, Kenya. Thanks to climate change, it hardly ever rains in the area. She used to have to walk for hours every day to collect water. Fortunately, things have changed. Solar energy is pumping clean water from deep underground to water points in her village. She now has enough water to drink and wash with. Click the link in bio to find out how we are helping people around the world to harness green energy to counter the devastating effects of climate change. 💚 #AnythingButNormal #Kenya #naturematters #sustainableliving #peopleoftheworld #humanityshots #travelstories #openmyworld #thepeoplewemet #travelphotography #peopleinframe #ig_globallife #people_and_world #worldcolours_people #humaninterest #peoplegallery #ig_humanity #climatechange #sight_people #natgeopeople #amazingpeople #people_infinity_ #humanity_shots_ #big_world_photo #photo_storee_people #naturaldisaster #disasterpreparedness #disasterrelief #disasterresponse #disastermanagement - @practical_action on Instagram

For a group of Indian blood donors across NZ, charity and serving the community is a way of life. The Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Force is involved in all sorts of community welfare activity, from disaster relief to tree planting to donating food parcels, blood and plasma. Dressed in their distinct khaki tracksuits, its hard to not notice the group. Were on a mission for humanity and the uniform represents our hard work, Lovedeep Sharma says. Giving blood is an essential service during lockdown and this is the groups first donation during alert level 3 this time around. They previously made donations during the first lockdown that began in March this year after being notified of several cancellations of blood donations. Simar Preet helps coordinate the group and shes here with her husband whos a plasma donor, and her two-year-old daughter who she hopes will become a donor as an adult. Simar was raised in India and watched her parents attend blood donation camps in Chandigarh, a town in the north. Its an opportunity to save lives - its so basic, and crucial. The Himba tribe still respect and live according to the traditions of their ancestors. They are an ancient tribe located in Namibia, speak a language called Otjihimba and are about 20,000 to 50,000 people in population. The Himba people are a semi-nomadic people who breed cattle and goats.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The women tend to do more labor-intensive work such as carrying water to the village, building homes and milking cows. Whereas the men handle more of the political tasks and legal trials, which also make them the leaders.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Their homes are simple, cone-shaped structures bound together with palm leaves and mud. In the Himba culture a sign of wealth is the cattle you had owned during your lifetime, which is later on represented by the horns on your grave.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba women are famous for rubbing their bodies with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre (an iron-rich rock), believed to protect their skins against the harsh climate. The red mixture is said to symbolize earths rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba worship their ancestors and the god Mukuru. Often times, the ancestors act as Mukurus representatives. Their homes are surrounded by an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and their livestock, both are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship. The fire represents ancestral protection and the livestock allows for proper relations between human and ancestor. Each family has their own ancestral fire, which is kept by the fire-keeper, who attends to the ancestral fire every seven to eight days in order to communicate with Mukuru and the ancestors on behalf of the family 👦🏿👩🏾👩🏿🦱🧒🏽👧🏿⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ #africana #panafricanism⠀ #visitaftica #africatravel #unapologeticallyblack #proudlyafrican ❤️ #divinedarkskin #panafricanist #africanlife #weloveafrica #blackpeoplematter #africandiaspora #eastafrican #blackandproud #blackandproud✊🏾 #melanated #blackrevolution #blacknation #travelafrica #blackculturematters #himbatribe #namibia🇳🇦 - @africandiaries_ on Instagram

Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua works as a pea farmer in a local Kenyan village during the day, but four evenings a week he drives for hours to provide water for thirsty buffalos, elephants, zebras and antelopes! 💧🐃🦓 . The 41-year old man delivers 3,000 gallons of water in his special water truck four evenings a week, at his own personal cost, to Tsavo West National Park, which has been struck by a severe drought. . The animals have become so used to the routine that they are often found waiting beside the empty concrete bowls, where he unloads the precious liquid cargo. . Comment your thoughts! . . . The blaze first broke out on Tuesday at Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Large stretches of the camp burned down. Only a medical facility and some small clusters of tents were left standing, according to the New York Times. No deaths were initially reported. The fires continued through Wednesday, leaving about 12,000 people without shelter. Police reinforcements were brought in to prevent people fleeing the fires from reaching the island’s main town of Mytilene, Al Jazeera reported. The camp’s residents, many of them refugees who fled Afghanistan or Syria, have been forced to sleep along roadsides and in fields and parking lots. The notoriously overcrowded camp had been in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is unclear how the fires started. Greek authorities said the fires may have been lit as a protest against mandatory quarantine measures. Read more at the link in our bio. SHATTERED DREAMS: Kishori Raut Kurmi, 65, of Bishrampur, Parsa has a family of seven. He lives in a small house with a thatched hay roof. Four years ago his son Mukesh, 39, left to go to Saudi Arabia, where he would get a job and support his family. He borrowed Rs 1,50,000 from someone from the village and was slowly paying his way. “He had planned to pay everything off this year,” says Kishori. When the pandemic started, the Kurmi family was making do with what they had. Three months ago, Kishor was sitting outside in his yard getting vegetables ready for dinner when the phone rang. “They told me my son, Mukesh, had died in Saudi Arabia,” he says. The family learned that Mukesh died in a road accident while trying to send money home. A few days later his son’s body arrived home in a coffin. “I am devastated,” says Kishori, “We sent our son abroad and we were weaving many dreams, but the dreams are shattered. According to the statistics from the Foreign Employment Promotion Board, an average of two Nepali migrant workers die abroad every day. Mukesh’s company has not sent the money his son earned, and Kishori has not heard anything from the Nepali government on compensation or relief. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has not been able to mourn his son’s death properly. For now all Kishori can think of is how to survive another day, “We are poor people. Sometimes we eat salt and rice and sometimes we stay hungry,” he says, “Nothing matters anymore, my son is dead, all the hope is gone.” Text and Photos: Madhuri Mahato @mmhisimmy Copy Edit: Nisha Rai @nishastoryteller Edit: Mallika Aryal @mikaness #nepalisabroad #nepalphotoproject #nepal #storiesoflabourmigration #storieofgrief #storiesofpandemic #covidresponse #saudiarabia #birgunj #loss #migrationstory - @nepalphotoproject on Instagram
