- One of the pictures from my graduation photoshoot in 2014. I was pretty proud of my bizarre hobbies.
Brent Carver was my hero. He was also a mentor and a friend. He died on August 4th of this year. My bio for the Shaw Festival House programme this season was meant to be a tribute to him. I’m gonna post it here. (These beautiful photos, first of Brent as Hamlet and then as Jacques, were taken by Robert Ragsdale and David Hou, respectively. These productions were at the Stratford Festival.) “I used to write fan letters to Brent Carver. I had first seen him as Cyrano de Bergerac at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, and I decided that night that he was - and would always be - my favourite living actor. He set my heart on fire. He was incredibly funny, unpredictable, emotional. It looked like magic, but I knew it must be hard work. So I sent him fan letters, and to my delight he often replied; graciously, encouragingly. Brent’s work and generosity meant the world to me as a young actor. And this, I think, exemplifies one of the great things about Canadian theatre: we have some of the best actors in the world here, and the vast majority of them are (like Brent) not only brilliant, but humble and kind as well.” #brentcarver #stratfordfestival #shawfestival - @atkins_damien on Instagram
