Happy birthday to the “best dog in the world.” I’m not the only one to say that. She’s empathic, caring, loves her friends hard, and has been a faithful companion for many years. She’s 13 today and nearing the end now, I can tell. My heart will break but damn I was lucky to find her. I almost didn’t keep her. Well that’s not exactly true. I found her on the streets early one morning and when I brought her home I told my roommate, “I’m not going to keep her, small dogs aren’t my thing.” But it was clear from that first night she was special. She is the best person I know. #ilyathedog #myvalentine PSA. Ilya has a collapsed trachea and she sometimes has to cough to breathe. The cough sounds like a goose honk and can go on and on for several minutes. Dogs, especially small, white dogs can inherit weak tracheas that will collapse over time. Ilya has very itchy skin—she’s allergic to everything so she scratched too hard and collapsed hers. Once it happens, it doesn’t go away and in her case, is only getting worse. One way to avoid this happening is to walk your dog in a “soft harness” (especially if you have a puller) but often it can happen without any trauma to the area. If you start to hear a “honking” noise go to your vet immediately. They will do some tests to determine if this is what has happened and then they will start your pup on a round of steroids and cough syrup. Eventually though it will be too big to handle and they won’t be able to breathe. There are surgical options but they are pretty major and not recommended for older dogs. - @tcubedevents on Instagram

Meet Garland and his dog Lucky! Garland was born in New York and raised by his mother. He joined the Air Force once he graduated high school and worked on the submarine patrol off the Galapagos Islands during World War 2. When he returned to the U.S. after the war, he met Wanda. They would go to dance halls often and his face lit up sharing those memories. He said “she would follow every move I would make…we were such good dance partners that people would stop dancing just to watch the two of us.” Wanda, who worked as a secretary to an Army captain, was soon given orders to relocate to South Dakota for an assignment. Garland didn’t want her to go without taking the next step so he proposed to her…he said that when he proposed he said “Will you marry me?...I’m asking you, because I love you.” She was hesitant to accept right away because she was six years older than him but he told her that didn’t matter to him. Wanda and Garland were married for 68 years. When I asked him if he had any marriage advice to give he said “Play the game right or don’t play at all.” Garland soon picked up the art of magic and he and Wanda soon became their own act. They toured around the world for 20 years performing. His favorite act was making seven live doves appear from nowhere. Garland was referred to our home delivered meals program because the manager of a grocery store noticed a man who was walking to his store to get his groceries. This man couldn’t drive due to his vision. That man was Garland. The manager started helping him with his groceries and then reached out to our program to further assist. We have been happily serving Garland for over a year now. Garland also shared how important his neighbors are to him right now. He spoke with love and care about how they all help him in different ways. He mentioned one who helps do the yard work around his home. Another takes him on errands and brings him some groceries. Another checks on him often to see if he has any needs. He shared how they on occasion have helped him do his laundry, clean his home, and even drive him so he can visit his wife’s graveside. - @mealsonwheelsanderson on Instagram

Grief is a wound. A mark on your soul, a stain on your life. A scar that never fades or completely heals. No leisurely walk through seven simple stages or easing with time. Up and down. Encompassing every feeling, every emotion & yet none at all. But always there. Just when you become used to its presence, without warning it rips open again like it did when grief first arrived. Blood gushing, skin inflamed, unbearable pain. You can feel it start to form before you’re teared open. When things start fading away, when people start fading away. Like when friends stop posting responding & posting online. When the brain mets stole ma away & she stopped calling me by my name. Grief is noticing their empty chair at the table during the family meal. It is punctuating every piece of good news with the reminder that you can’t share it with them and wanting to text them for help with problem but knowing you’ll never get a reply. It’s not just about missing a person. I grieve for our past & the future we could’ve had. For the memories we could’ve made & that we won’t build on the ones we already have. For the fact that some of the ones we made are set in hospitals & hospices, and that I had to see you in pain withering away. I grieve for the PhD Lucy could’ve earned. The restaurants Sai could’ve opened. The life I thought ma & I could’ve had together. That we planned to have. That we wanted to have. Because I still want to take you back to Florida & see you hold your Great Niece. I still want you to watch me get married. I still want to give you grandbabies. But we can’t & no platitude will let you hear someone call you their “ma-in-law” or “nanny”. Speaking of kids, I grieve for the certainty of fertility. For the body I had that ovulated & menstruated. It didn’t ache this much nor did it boil from the inside & make me feel like a stranger among my peers. See, it’s not just for people. We can grieve for moments, experiences & ourselves. Grief starts with an end. It expresses fear. It expresses longing. It expresses love. And as confusing and unpredictable as life, it is just that. Grief is a lifelong wound.
