An Open Letter to NYC 9/11/2015 Five years ago my old friend Efar and I traveled to Saint Louis after hitting Detroit for the famous Mississippi River wall. We tried to pull on off at the @paintlouis festival which is reaching back to 1995 and hosts a lot of good writers the us. The event really supported us with 3 days time, three nights with a roof, 20 cans (15 black, 5 white) and huge wall. We wanted to stand out and cover most of it with not spending more money in material. Since it was 9/11 we organized a free and big bucket of white roller paint and painted the famous cover of @beastieboysstory album „To the 5 Boroughs“ which holds a song „An open letter to NYC“ in memory of the twin towers. Everything was painted with spray, freehand and under quite some heat while efar had to do some work on the side I painted the background. The festival was very inspiring and I hold strong feelings and good memories. #neverforget Repost from @harrybensoncbe • September 11, 2001 It was a slow news day and the Today Show had started a segment on cooking or gardening, I can’t remember exactly, but Gigi and I cut off the television. Less than five minutes later, Gigi’s brother, Dan Daniels, called from Texas to ask what was going on up in New York. We had no idea what he was talking about, but turned the television back on just in time to see the second plane hit the Twin Towers. Immediately I picked up a camera and headed downtown. Both Towers had fallen, and the area was cordoned off by the time I got there, but I walked across the Manhattan Bridge and took the photograph of the Brooklyn Bridge with the burning Towers in the background. People were walking silently across the bridges as the world watched in horror. The next day the press passes that were allowed behind the barriers were shocking pink, and I remember I had one the same color that was 10 years old. Instead of standing in line for hours to get a new press pass, I just turned mine over so the year didn’t show and used it. I would probably have been arrested if anyone had looked very closely at the date. I happened upon Ammo, a German Shepherd, who was searching for bodies in the rubble. The dog was exhausted and collapsed in front of me. His trainer carried him into a portable First Aid Station where Ammo was given glucose and allowed to rest until he was ready to begin again. The weary firemen and policemen were the extraordinary heroes of the day working around the clock as they tried desperately to find survivors and put out the fire on the rubble where the beautiful World Trade Towers had stood. I remember going to the dentist and playing outside on the little train wondering why my mom seemed distracted and asking her why there was smoke in the sky. I remember going home and learning building in NYC were hit, being sent away from the TV when I saw someone jump out of the building. I remember my big sister had to get picked up in person from school cause so many of her peers would not have parents. I remember the release for my mom when she learned my dads meeting had been moved from the World Trade Center to uptown the day before. That he was safe just wouldn’t make it out of the city for days. I have these memories still in my mind from 19 years ago. It’s crazy to think of how much has happened now my life and the fact I still clearly remember lots of little snippets from that day. I honor and commemorate our friends parents who never came home after that day. It was one of those crisp early NYC fall days when you feel like you can conquer the world. I woke up, got on the subway with my iced coffee, and went to my new job at Ogilvy and Mather advertising agency in midtown. We were in our morning status and out of nowhere this women started screaming in the hallway that one of the “twin” towers was hit and that her husband was in the building. My boss turned on the TV in the conference room and then we watched the second tower go up in smoke. It was so surreal. I had been in NYC for two months. I didn’t know how to feel. I was so scared and confused. We were all dismissed and I walked home along the crowded streets of people in panic. Luckily I had a strong network of friends from college and highschool to lean on. We banded together, did what we could to help, and held each other tight as we watched the endless news of this devastation. I ended up living in New York for the next 13 years. I watched as we re-built our city and faith in humanity. New York always seems to always get hit the worst. Probably because it’s the most resilient city in the world- filled with people who live there because they want to be there. People who live in NYC are survivors, whether it be terrorist attacks, hurricanes, blackouts, shady politicians, or pandemics, there is nothing that can break the core of this special place. Like you, our customers and community, New York Distilling Company is grappling with how to recognize the protests going on all around us, and how to make a positive difference. We’re a small company with limited resources. We don’t pretend to have particular insights on the big picture – we make gin and rye— but we love our community and its diversity and feel the desire and need to be purposeful and attentive. Within our industry, a tragedy occurred last Friday. Du Nord Craft Spirits, located in Minneapolis on the same block as a police precinct, was set on fire and then deluged with 400,000 gallons of water from their sprinkler system. The damage was devastating. Du Nord is one of the few minority-owned craft distillers in the United States, co-founded by Shanelle and Chris Montana in 2013. Chris, the immediate past President of our national association, is one of the most respected and admired leaders of our industry. We cannot lose his voice and presence. This week we are thinking of Shanelle and Chris and directing our efforts toward helping their distillery recover. We are making an initial donation today of $1,000 to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the American Craft Spirit Association, which you can find below And we hope to do more. Help us support Du Nord. Either donate directly to the fund or buy our spirits. Because of strange, frustrating and anachronistic NY State Liquor Authority regulations we are not allowed to say things like “all profits” this week will be donated. This years @tunnel2towers run was a little different. Although Tommy wasn’t there physically, he was there in spirit with us. This years 5k run had a large showing for Tommy, with the run being in his memory. Tommy always ran this 5k in turnouts and he did it knowing it was for an amazing cause. The Linear Park enhancement is part of the ongoing Mission Boulevard Corridor Improvements project and will address the area running along the east side of Mission roughly between Blanche and Fairview streets and varying in width from 50 to 65 feet. Long post 🚨: In 2001 I had the opportunity of a lifetime to play in Slide Hampton’s working band. While performing at The Indy Jazz Festival I was blessed to get one on one time with, Elvin Jones! It was actually ‘one on two’ time, initially. I’ll spare you the lengthy story of how it went down. Keiko and @elewrockjazz were there and it was all good! After Mr Jones’ set he spoke to me again (one on one this time), suggest I move to NY, gave me a big hug, and told me he was ‘in the Union book’ and to to look him up once I get there. Now, I am more determined and plan to move out east by 2002. I will never forget THAT morning. My friend and roommate @nephiilim1 said “Jerome look what’s going down!” We were in utter shock, disbelief, and saddened. #1 question from September 11th 2001- July 2002: “Are you still going?” #1 answer: “Yeah!” Every 9/11 I think really hard about the attack, people who lost their lives, lost loved ones, folks living with respiratory ailments and sickness, our fire fighters, paramedics, New Yorkers and Jersey residents who witnessed this atrocity up close. Then, we saw what courage looks like, we saw what true heroism looks like, we saw what unbreakable spirit looks like. Before the dust had even settled, brave men and women rushed into the chaos to save the lives of total strangers. Some wore the uniforms of police and first responders, while others were dressed in business attire, or whatever they had been wearing on that cool September morning when their lives were forever changed. None of them hesitated, nor turned away out of doubt that they weren’t up to the challenge, they simply responded. 2,977 souls were lost on that day. Tens of thousands were saved because of the selfless heroics of those who rushed into the rubble to pull them to safety. Many of those who saved lives on that faithful day have gone on to lose their own lives in the years that have passed. Like the victims of 9/11, they shall never be forgotten. Dear Petite Adele family and followers On Sunday, August 10, 2020, a fire broke out at our Petite Adele showroom in Downtown L.A. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but our beautiful showroom was destroyed along with everything in it. My Next season collection samples are all gone too. I am still in a shock stage right now. I woke up the middle of the night last night and cried... This morning I realized that the insurance won’t fully cover the loss. Another shock.. It really happened at the worst time. Its hard to believe that its been almost 20 years since 9/11 and yet for everyone alive on that day it has been permanently carved into our memory. Almost every moment of that day is crystal clear for everyone who was around. For most of our audience it was THE event that propelled us into a career in medicine, the military, national security, law enforcement (and for most in GSMSG, a combination of those things). For many of us it is also hard to grasp that there are those who grew up entirely in a post 9/11 world. . . who dont really (or willingly choose not to) fully comprehend what that day did to America . . . . and because it is not clear to them, they cant, or choose not to, understand why we do what we do . .as a nation . . as a community . . and as an individual. This country has its flaws, but the freedom to just be free in the most fundamental sense to just live and let live and to exist and explore what these amber waves of grain have to offer. . . . along with your freedom to protest, shout, march and vote against it, and yet not have to worry about Novichok in your coffee, disappearing into a Chinese re-education camp, or Sarin gas being dropped into your village is ultimately what came under attack that day. Wanton mass death and oppression for any reason or no reason at all like on 9/11 is the opposite of what our country stands for. We will not stand for an attack on our way of life in our house. It’s 4 am on September 11th and as I sit in a fire engine on a Wildland fire in Southern California looking for hot spots I think of the phrase “never forget”. 19 years ago on September 11th I was studying to become a paramedic and didn’t realize my path was leading me to become a firefighter. After that day it was clear to me that the war I knew of good vs evil from back home was now here in the USA. You see as a young Jewish kid I was very familiar with the phrase “never forget” my family was nearly completely exterminated by the nazis and if it wasn’t for my grandmother being the sole survivor of her family my whole family wouldn’t be here today. It’s because of this I don’t take the term never forget lightly. So to my fellow first responders and country: May we never forget the tremendous loss of first responders and civilians that day. May we never forget the families they left behind. May we never forget that we must constantly train to be ready for the next challenge. May we never forget that evil still exists and wants to harm us. May we never forget that as first responders this job has never been about us, but about serving others. May we never forget that it doesn’t matter how good the technology and equipment we have, it still boils down to us being able to make critical decisions under stress. May we never forget the traditions of our brotherhood. May we never forget why we signed up to do this job. May we never forget the sacrifices of those that came before us and may we never forget how united we were and can still be like on September 12th 2001 when we lifted each other and got back up as a united country. As a New Yorker this time of year is always so emotional. We grew up living in the suburbs just north of the city. Almost all of our friends parents were commuters to the city. I was 17 (a college freshman), I hadnt gone to my first class for the day yet. My mom called me & said, Put on the tv! The World Trade Center just got hit by a plane. As shes scrambling & talking to her co-workers, my eyes were glued to the TV. The broadcaster holding the microphone looked up, looked back at the camera, screamed another plane just hit the second tower & they ran. I spoke softly in disbelief, Mom... another plane just hit.. She took a gasp for air & said something I have never until that momment heard before, We are under attack! The upcoming hours, days and weeks had brought New Yorkers together in a way we had never seen before. Locally, we had no phone coverage for what felt like forever to find out if our family & friends were ok, all of the lines wouldnt dial out. We watched on the news as people walked home over the Brooklyn Bridge. We prayed as we didnt hear from them & drove to be with out loved ones. Even if we didnt have a loved one lost, we sobbed thinking about those we did. We were there for eachother, we helped one another, we loved each person for who they were. We saw human kind for what it was. A time where we were united no matter our race, religion, class or political views. United we stand always ❤. Never forget where NY tough originated from😔. Thank you @lindseyehrlicherstyles for sharing this beautiful moment with us. ⠀ She and her family were evacuated from the wildfires that are currently impacting Napa and Sonoma Counties - they have since relocated to a hotel here in San Francisco. ⠀ It’s been a long stressful week for them and while they were out in the city walking, her son stopped and waived at Officer David Cheng who took no pause in stopping to say ‘Hello’. He pulled his patrol car over...turned on his red and blue lights and stepped out to greet this family with stickers in hand. His act of kindness made this family’s night and restored their faith in a simple but impactful 5 minute chat with a complete stranger. ⠀ These are the moments we love to see and share. Posted @withregram • @fdny On Sunday, September 20, #FDNY members responded to a construction site in Queens where a worker had fallen approximately 1 ½ stories following the collapse of an I-beam girder. FDNY members from #Station50, #Station39, and Queens Tactical Response Group (QTRG) arrived first on scene to confirm the patient was in stable condition. FDNY members from #Ladder150, #Engine270, and #Ladder165 secured the patient to a stokes basket and removed the patient to safety via aerial ladder. The patient was transported to a local hospital in stable condition by FDNY members from Station 39 and #QTRG. - @fdnyfoundation on Instagram
