Hello everyone, after a very long week, I’ve returned! We are back to our regularly scheduled programming. While I was away, I ran into an image of a beautiful city resting at the base of mountains. The Andes Mountains to be precise. The city you see above bathing in the sunset is Santiago, Chile, the capitol of Chile. . Taken by Chilean photographer @andres_briones_c , the city of Santiago is located around the middle of the country and around 50 miles (80 km) from the border of Argentina. Its location was chose in the year 1540 by conquistador Pedro de Valdivia while he and his crew camped near the Mapocho river and found that the area was inhabited by the local people, the Picunche people. Upon interacting with each other, Valdivia summoned the chiefs to a parliament and let them know about his intentions of converting that area into a city for King Carlos I of Spain. Fast-forward 500 years and the city has grown into the largest city in Chile while still maintaining its natural origins that defined the city in its early days.   . I spoke a little about the city with Andres, and a few people I know that have personally been to Santiago and I was surprised upon learning that depending on which way you travel, you’re never more than about an hour or so drive from either the beach, or snowy terrain. However, given Chile’s geography and shape, this made a lot of sense. They also described the town as pretty upscale and walkable if you don’t have access to a car. They told me about all of the local markets and street airs that were witnesses and after hearing their description of the city it became clear to me that Santiago has a certain energy to it that’s unique to Chilean culture. . Chile is a country that has always been of interest to me for hosting abnormally high mountains and the driest desert. In all honesty I haven’t heard much of Santiago until I spoke with Andres and browsed his work (which I recommend you do as well). I Enjoyed learning about Santiago and sharing it with you all. - The city looks like a scene right out of blade runner.

Major San Gabriel Valley institutions came together on Aug. 29 to help ease hunger and food insecurity. Many of those volunteering were students and teachers. A well-choreographed assembly line of trunk opening, ushering and dropping of boxes, bags and diapers moved the line of cars down Second Street between Alhambra High School and City Hall, which has become the backdrop for Alhambra’s COVID-19 assistance response. Volunteers allowed 10 cars at one time to pull up to the 10 spaces at the distribution tents with their trunks already open to encourage as much social distancing as possible. Each car received four “kits” of meat/protein, cheese/dairy and fruits/vegetables, each portioned for one person. They were also asked if they were in need of diapers, donated by non-profit BABY2BABY, a mega diaper bank that supplies essentials to enfants and children in need. When all trunks were loaded the next ten cars were shuffled into place. Over 1,000 cars were served. No one was turned away, but supplies did run out. Turnout was so high at the start of the event that overflow traffic had to be turned down Atlantic Boulevard and eventually stretched to the 10 freeway, APD reported at the event. In addition, Alhambra Unified School District will again serve meals to anyone under the age of 18, regardless of their enrollment in the district or family income. As we approach Memorial Day weekend, we can’t help but to stop and reflect on our Americans citizens who have lost their lives battling all sorts of unfortunate threats to our country—including this novel covid-19 virus. We honor and salute you! I have been hearing, reading and seeing a lot of opinions and some tension around the “need” of wearing a mask. As a doctor, I have been trained to wear a mask in order to protect myself and my patients from a virus and/or disease. Yesterday, I rode my bike around the city that still sleeps and found this simple message in Battery Park City: “one small ask, please wear a mask.” Wear it because you care! You don’t know who has an immunocompromised, or elderly, loved one at home. If you feel confused about whether people should wear a mask, why, and what kind, you’re not alone. COVID-19 is a novel disease—a moving target—and we’re learning new things about it every day. Yes, the CDC now recommends we wear masks or cloth face coverings, but do we really need anyone to tell us that? The major transmission route of COVID-19 is via droplets that fly out of our mouths—that includes when we speak, sing, laugh—not just when we cough or sneeze. I know much of the confusion around masks stems from miscommunication, misinformation and misunderstandings, so I hope this helps. 😷 I have worn a mask to protect myself from getting infected and/or I have worn a mask to protect others from being infected by the me. 😷 Masks can also be worn to prevent transmission to others, and this is their most important use for society. We don’t know for sure who’s sick, so the only solution is for everyone to wear masks—for now. We all want to go back to not wearing masks! We hope this is temporary, so if we can work together, hopefully it will be. If we can lower the likelihood of one person infecting another, the impact is exponential—even a small reduction in those odds results in a huge decrease in disease and deaths. Since Ive been back to work this month, it has been so amazing connecting with those of you in the studio on so many different levels..some of us have laughed together, some of us have cried together (or youve made me cry with all your kind words, generosity, & support), some of us have shared the joys/nightmares of being “stuck” at home...it all has been so reflective for me to really sit back & take a look at all the things in life we have & slow down a bit to reflect on these last few months as well as glance into the future... • At the beginning of March we had finally made the big move to be right in the heart of downtown Chicago & found an Amazing winter deal that was too good to pass up to be able to live in a high-rise full of magical amenities with only an 8minute walk to my new salon studio!! Back in February it felt like 2020 was Finally Our Year!! ..and let me tell you weve had quite a challenging few years here on a personal level but something felt just right about this year...the weeks prior to everything getting shutdown due to Covid, my fiancé was finally cleared from his work injury to go back to work...we were SO excited/nervous since he had been off work for quite some time & there were some uncertainties floating around about this virus...but we rose up to the challenge together, he went back to work, & I swear the Universe works in magical ways because it knew us being quarantined together would NOT be good for either of us😅 then the following week I was told to pack up & lock the salon until further notice😔 •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What a ride this year has been..these last almost 4mths have brought out the best & worst in many of us..but it also helped us all slow down to reflect on our lives..whether we wanted to or not..& Im thankful for that & you xo #hollibeauty - @hollibeauty_ on Instagram

On Monday July 6th, a staff member at Pizzeria Toro tested positive for COVID-19. Although we have been closed for the past two holiday days, and our teams have not been working together, we are taking the extra precaution of closing Pizzeria Toro for now while our teams at Toro and Jack Tar & The Colonel’s Daughter test for COVID-19. Once we can confirm who has tested negative, we will reopen for curbside service at each location. We anticipate reopening both later this week. In the meantime, we are grateful that our staff member who tested positive is not exhibiting any difficult symptoms. nov 4, 2018. it was a beautiful autumn day. at around 3pm I was looking out the window and it looked like a large storm of rubble was falling from the sky. the roof. it collapsed without warning. it landed onto the sidewalk within seconds. it felt like an earthquake once the rubble hit the ground. one person was injured badly, but luckily we were all able to dig her out of the rubble. the city / landlord / neighboring businesses estimated that the stores would be closed for 6 months. we were only open for 6 months to begin with and we were just starting to get things poppin’. I didn’t know what was going to happen next. did I have to just give everything up and pursue a different path? 😔 • • • my staff kept it 100 by telling me that they would wait patiently until we were able to reopen. throughout the time that we were closed, I was running out of money, losing hope, and I fell into a deep depression. I secluded myself from everyone and I took a break from social media. 3 weeks after the accident, I got a call that we could reopen again. I had mixed feelings. I was anxious and I didn’t feel like I had it in me to continue. i wanted to throw in the towel several times and list the business for sale. with the help of my friends, therapy, and meds, I was able to crawl out of the darkness. I tell myself this every time I face adversity - “I’ve come too fuckin’ far to quit”. thank you to those who helped me come back to the light. if you’re struggling mentally, you’re not alone. just remember that everything is temporary. 💯 • • • I got some new dope ideas and projects in the works. thank you for keeping me motivated. thank you for helping me fulfill my destiny. stay tuned. it’s kimchi szn bitches 🔪 - @kimchipapi617 on Instagram

Watched with my own eyes, right in front of me, a seething white LAPD cop (Officer Clark, I pray someone got his badge number) repeatedly beat a black girl with his baton...she never touched him, was half his size, was merely yelling. The police are instigating the violence, and the looting and riots are the response to it. Don’t let your friends or relatives who are not out here tell you otherwise! Everyone protesting has seen countless moments of police responding to verbal abuse and water bottles being thrown with incredibly aggressive physical force, shooting rubber bullets at protestors, firing tear gas into peaceful crowds. When white people come to the front, the police back up and simmer down a bit. As fucked up as that is, it happens clear as day, and it’s why it’s so important for able bodied white people to go out and protest if you can. There are constant calls for white allies to come to the front. I’m no macho man, believe me it’s terrifying. Facing off with antagonistic police is one of the scariest things - imagine how black people feel all the time. But we have a duty to stand up. Even if you’re not on the front lines, you can show up with supplies and still maintain social distancing guidelines. Young healthy privileged people who have living situations that permit it - it’s a risk we should be willing to take if we can. If you’re willing to risk COVID exposure to go drink at a party, this shouldn’t be different. Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California that is famous for a steep, one-block section with eight hairpin turns. Why Is This Street So Crooked 🛣?⠀ ⠀ It’s the most obvious question that springs to mind, and the answer is actually simpler than you might suspect: safety and comfort. Like many streets in San Francisco, Lombard Street, particularly around that 1000 block, is quite steep. Back in the 1920s, the residents of the area got together and suggested adding some sharp turns to this section of the road to increase pedestrian safety, make the grade more manageable for the not so technologically-advanced vehicles of the time, and add some well-deserved aesthetic appeal to the area🚘.⠀ ⠀ And so it was done. The Bernal Rock as many know it, has become a public message board. For a week in June 2020, the message had been Black Lives Matter but was painted over multiple times by the City. Artists Kseniya Makarova and Micah Rivera painted the BLM message on the rock six times in less than a week. He pulled his patrol car over...turned on his red and blue lights and stepped out to greet this family with stickers in hand. Before ➡️ During ➡️ After ... During Climate Week 2020 (September 19 - 26), Hunters Point Parks Conservancy partnered with Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA - @newtowncreek) and many dedicated volunteers to create a pollinator garden on the medians on 48th Ave. in Long Island City. Additional partners on the project include Hunter’s Point Community Middle School, PS/IS 78, and the New York City Department of Transportation. HPPC and NCA worked with many volunteers over the course of four days -starting with removing weeds and trash from the long-neglected medians on Saturday, 9/19. We then planted over 600 native grasses and wildflowers in the Western median on Wednesday, 9/23 and another 500+ on the Eastern median on Friday, 9/25. The project was completed on Saturday, 9/26 by spreading mulch around the plants on both medians. In total, over 1,100 plants were planted on the medians and over 75 volunteers helped on the project. We were also fortunate enough to have the support of U.S. Congresswoman @carolynbmaloney, who stopped by twice to lend a hand and commend our work. In future school years, the garden will be used by students at both Hunter’s Point Community Middle School and PS/IS 78 as a teaching tool when they navigate the Newtown Creek Urban Ecology Curriculum that NCA & HPPC co-produced and introduced into their classrooms. The benefits of this type of garden are many, most notably as habitat for ecological valuable pollinators, like butterflies, moths, and bees and small birds. They also provide important ecosystem services including infiltration and filtration of stormwater, carbon storage, and nutrient recycling. Wildflower meadows are ecologically-friendly landscape components that, once established, have minimal maintenance requirements. The 48th Median planting project is generously supported through the NYC Environmental Fund administered by @nfwf and @nysdec.
