Mike. We spent years travelling and making music together. We lived in each other’s faces and shared little hotel rooms with tiny bathrooms, and I don’t recall one moment when you lost your cool with me. I loved playing music with you. Your drumming was sublime, and any musician who was fortunate enough to have you playing behind them sounded five times as good as they really were. You could play tenderly and soulfully. You could also make the kit sound like a thunder storm. Your ride cymbal gave me permanent tinnitus, but it’s ok, I was trying really hard to give you permanent tinnitus too. The ringing in my ears is just one of the ways you’ll live on now. I loved seeing the world with you. I was always enthralled by the very unique brand of mischief you’d get into, and was always happy to accompany you to whichever hospital or police station the situation might have called for. You were charming and hilarious. Over the years we amassed a library of in-jokes, indecipherable to the outside world. Just last week we exchanged a couple of them. What do I do with them now? Tonight BBC 4 shows the third and final part of the hugely enjoyable Soul America series. The footage has been well chosen, the talking heads mostly on the money and the music has, obviously, been sensational. If I didn’t love her enough already the absolute star of the show for me has been Mavis Staples. We know she’s a great singer but it’s been a delight - though no surprise - to discover what a sweet, warm natured lady she is, and one with the most wonderful laugh.
