Immediately, you rush to the doctor and unfortunately, you’re diagnosed with COVID-19. For the last two weeks, you’ve been unaware that you contracted Corona and you’ve ignored the rules. Youve gotten together with some close friends for pizza, had a few people over, even visited a park and a beach. You figured, “I don’t feel sick. I have the right to keep living my normal life. No one can tell me what to do. With your diagnosis, you spend the next few days at home on the couch, feeling pretty crappy; but then you’re well again because you’re young, healthy and strong. Lucky you. But your best friend caught it from you during a visit to your house, and because she didnt know she was contagious, she visited her 82-year-old grandfather, who uses oxygen tanks daily to help him breathe because he has COPD and heart failure. Now, he’s dead. Your co-worker, who has asthma, caught it too, during your little pizza get-together. Now, he’s in the ICU, and hes spread it to a few others in his family, too--but they wont know that for another couple of weeks yet. The cashier at the restaurant where you picked up the pizza carried the virus home to his wife, who has MS, which makes her immunosuppressed. Thank you for all the love we got from friends and family about the loss of our sweet Posh. I know she is in doggie heaven with Chip, Sophie, and Liesel. Its been a rough day, especially for Pippi who has never been apart from her and for Daniel who had her since she was a puppy. She was Daniels constant studio companion for the 12 years we have lived here. Before we even started dating, Daniel walked her to a yard sale at my parents house and she ran circles around me and I got leash burn on my legs. We will love and miss her so. ❤️💔 oh! She is a Motivational speaker, horticulturist, avid food blogger, landscaper and a baker by passion. She is high spirited and a go getter. From compromising her job for her children, standing against conservative mindset to being a single parent, Doorva stood strong through all hardships and challenges. She wanted women to be independent and grow continuously. Therefore, she came up with an idea of commencing a Day care where the children can learn, play and rest comfortably and parents can work without worrying about their little ones. Doorva also commenced an NGO called WIN (Women In Need) for which she was awarded by the former CM of Rajasthan Smt. Vasundhara Raje Ji. The NGO offers vocational training for women and free education for their children at her school. Her passion for plants and gardening led her to start her own line of exotic plants named GRUN @grun_gift_a_plant_gift_oxygen . This is the energy I like to bring ✨💫 Folks have been reacting to Extinction: The Facts that aired on @bbcone and yes it was shocking, and yes it was scary, upsetting. But it was also HOPEFUL. Just five years ago (when this photo was taken) a programme like this on primetime, mainstream telly was UNTHINKABLE. This is the sort of film that myself and so many of my peers have wanted to make for almost twenty years. But there’s some wisdom in the idea that you can only tell stories when people are ready to hear them. If despair was the over-riding emotion on the first viewing, watch the film again. Or at least the second half which spells out the solutions. It all there! My mom, Dr. Nirmal Patel, came to America from India all alone at the age of 28. She landed at JFK with exactly $7 in her pocket. Nirmal lugged her two huge suitcases to the subway station at the airport. Her intention was to make it to Queens, where she would crash at a girlfriend’s apartment until she got her bearings as a resident in Anesthesiology. The subway doors opened, and my mom put one suitcase onto the train. She stepped back onto the platform to grab the other. And suddenly, the train doors shut. The subway took off, and she stood there shell-shocked, having lost half of all her belongings. She hadn’t been in the US for even an hour. If you’ve met my Mother, this story explains a lot. Dr. Patel is no joke. She is strong. She is spicy. She doesn’t put up with BS. My mom still sees patients a few days a week, even in COVID, even at the age of 70. She loves her work. She loves to connect with others. This keeps her Spicy. My mother has come very far from that subway platform. And when she sent me these unbelievable black and white photos of her 40 years ago I wanted nothing more than to pass that inspiration onto you. Standing up to name the fact that I am indeed in so called “quasi recovery”. I stick to the recovery actions that get me to the bare minimum. I’m not starving myself. I’m not counting calories. I’m not laying in bed all day. BUT I’m still caught amongst the layers of rules. Little rules that add up enough to keep me clinging onto an eating disorder. Haha I WISH an eating disorder is something that can be considered a “diet”. But unfortunately it’s much more complicated, messy and confusing. ⁣ That said, I know that FULL recovery from this will serve as one of my greatest strengths. Every time I’ve tried to project a timeline - it doesn’t work. At all. So I’m not sure when I’ll be able to move through this “quasi” stuff, BUT I do know that I will keep moving. I did not go through hell to only stop here. ⁣ I’m putting this out there because I know I often compare myself to other people in recovery here on IG. I relate to the people who have known enough suffering to understand an ED, but envy those who have photograph a beautiful rising or can now consider themselves recover-ed. I want to be extremely transparent in saying I am NOT that. I am NOT living the mental bliss of accepting myself. Quarantine has many of us dealing with grooming issues. Personally, I never realized how much I rely on the wonderful people who do my hair, brows, and nails. I feel a bit like the shaggy DA right now which for those who do not know, came out in the 70s and had a shaggy dog in it. And speaking of shaggy dogs, my guys are looking a bit crazy right now. Oscar, my terrier is shedding all over my place (sure do miss his deshedding treatments from @seusspupandfriends) and Quincy’s ears are so long right now so they flop in the water bowl when he drinks. 🐩 That being said, my dogs are so happy I am home more with them,they do not care how crazy or disheveled I or they look. I may still be shallow enough to care but at the end of the day, we all are living this crazy experience together and am truly grateful I am still here and we all are healthy. ☁️I intend to live a life bigger than those I dream. ☁️ It took me a lot of courage to post this but on reflection by hiding it at the risk of making others feel uncomfortable only ends up a detriment to me. So first the facts. 🧠 Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological condition that impairs the brain’s ability to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. 💤 It affects 1 in 2,000 people—3 million people worldwide. 📶 Normally it takes 8-15 years to get a diagnosis due to low awareness misconceptions ⏭ 📖 Story time 📚 I remember the very first GP I saw, I thought I had anaemia which was causing my tiredness 🩸 - arriving at the doctors early in the morning starved of my daily bowl of coco pops and a rather grumpy teenager he dutifully took my bloods and listened to my mum and I, where he responded with “it was quite possible I had low iron but he sounded more like NARCOLEPSY.” ⁉️⁉️⁉️ This alien term didn’t even register with me. Fast forward to the day before my 18th birthday after years of appointments, tests and misdiagnosis, being called lazy, missing out, never managing watch to end a film, tears, arguments, being punched in the arm by friends to stay awake - I was once again diagnosed, officially this time with narcolepsy and cataplexy. 😴 I hope by raising awareness no one else go through the heart ache and struggles which I felt, @remrunner writes about this so eloquently in her book and I would definitely recommend it! Can we talk about mental projections and how disruptive they can be to your health? When your mind is constantly looping past events or projecting into the future, anxiety, expectations or fear will most definitely show up creating dis-ease in your body. Habitual thought patterns can entrench you and grip your mind keeping you fixated on the same frustrating thought variations. That said, It IS totally possible to create an inner world worth living in. Most important is to become hyper aware of your thought patterns. Identify them completely. Where did the thoughts you are thinking originate? Are your thoughts coming from a drama with an actual person or are your thoughts from an imagined inner critic? Ask yourself, are these thoughts supporting my peace of mind? Doing this mental exercise is like shining a flashlight on a cat burglar. And, once you’re fully able to identify and confront your thought patterns, self realization becomes a real possibility. And, not unlike meditation, identifying the thoughts and the origins of your thinking gives you the power to put them aside. Your life then becomes a moving meditation. Just the act of seeing and becoming aware is a game changer. I won’t lie, being aware of your thinking takes some tenacity because the mind is very cunning and we are used to letting it run Roughshod over us. But I ask, is there any task more worthy of hard work then creating your own peace of mind? It really is in your hands. Sweet Thoughts🍪🍪🍪 A lot of people ask me where I see my cookie business in 5 years. This comes up a lot and it really got me thinking! I would love to see my cookies and Sweet E’s in more stores. It is so hard to find convenience food treats that are safe for individuals with food allergies. I would love to see them on the end caps of grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants. My dream is to have them at Starbucks, Disney World and other large retailers that don’t have many other grab and go treats for people like me. I have always dreamed of walking into Starbucks and getting something, unfortunately I can not do that. If one day as I get older and a friend of mine wants to meet at Starbucks (or the equivalent) I would have to buy a bottle of water and watch as others ate and drank around me. Hace casi un par de años, la vida me regaló a través de @anadiazproductora 🌻, una conexión con @ingridserranoduque ; el chispazo ocurrió, conectamos desde la maternidad, la música, la espiritualidad… Ella me hizo sentir en casa y protegida desde el momento uno, fue como un gran abrazo de esos que dicen: “todo va a estar bien” (esos abrazos que casualmente me da constantemente @anadiazproductora ). Ingrid creó un espacio de contención, de amor, de abrazo, de comprensión… Un útero, como lo llama ella de forma muy atinada, ese espacio se llama: @pijamadaamorpropio . Dentro de ese espacio de amor, me he encontrado con mujeres maravillosas que hoy en día tengo la fortuna de poder llamar AMIGAS. También he tenido la oportunidad de reconectar, en este caso, con una mujer músico que admiro, quiero y con quien también hice un “click” instantáneo: @hanakobayashi 💙. A través de la melomanía (incluyendo nuestros gustos musicales), nuestros procesos personales que son muy similares y la gastronomía (porque siendo Hana trujillana -entre otras ascendencias- conoce uno de mis platos favoritos: las carabinas); y la vulnerabilidad tan pura y femenina que hemos abrazado y nos lleva a crear cosas y relaciones maravillosas: Hana y yo tenemos una conexión cósmica 💫. Ayer, durante un IG Live, compartimos un pedacito de todo eso que nos une, se nos llenaron los ojos de lagrimas, se nos erizó la piel y se hizo magia 🔮 , esa magia que sólo el poder de la música es capaz de evocar. Let’s talk about this #challengeaccepted trend – which is, in fact, a global awareness campaign for femicide in Turkey. On July 16, 2020, Pinar Gültekin, a 27-year-old student, was reported missing in the Turkish province of Mugla. Five days later, her body was found in the forest. Turkish media outlets reported that she was beaten, then strangled by her ex-boyfriend, who later burned her body in a garbage bin and covered it in concrete. As news of her murder spread, black-and-white images of her circulated through Turkish media. In response, women in Turkey started the #challengeaccepted trend, posting black-and-white pictures of themselves to stand in solidarity with Pinar and other victims of patriarchal violence. Femicide – or the killing of womxn with impunity – is a widespread issue in Turkey, and the death rates increase every year. In 2019, 474 Turkish womxn were murdered by partners or relatives. In 2020, that figure is predicted to be even higher, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine regulations. As a 1st gen immigrant doc, I am familiar with poverty and culture. “Racial minorities- all come from non-Western cultures where most people seek to adjust to outside conditions rather than seeking change, —Westerners are moralistic about social order, demanding that behavior respect universal principles, while in the non-West norms are less rigid and depend mostly on the expectations of others. “. Unfortunately, I am not surprised of a “research piece” designed to illustrate why people of color are fundamentally not enough to take advantage of the professional and social opportunities presented to them. But everything I have become is because of the change I seek and bc of other POCs. NOT because I took advantage of “western world opportunities”. POCs showed me I could become who I am in spite of opportunities for western people whose lever of poverty and culture were very different from mine. . I owe everything I am to my grit, to my Latina power house family who never doubted my potential and showed me that there was no limit. . To my Black female English teacher in high school who saw a new immigrant kid who dared to take AP English and constantly reminded me to be patient with myself bc with hard work I would accomplish anything I set my mind to. . To my Latino pre Med friend, an incredibly talented surgeon now, who in undergrad showed me there was room for me in medicine and encouraged me through every step of my application/ med school/ residency application. . To the amazing Latinx physicians I met in #lmsa and social media that showed me #sisepuede. Because of them, I get to care for the people I have had the honor to serve in this pandemic and young career. . Not because of my “Western” high school adviser who said I should reconsider college and go for a technical degree because -as a Latina- I would become pregnant soon, my male pre Med adviser who said my GPA and MCAT were not high enough for med school and I should give up, my Med-school advisor who had no idea how to help me study for boards, or the racially biased institutions who made me feel I didn’t belong every step.
