Introducing our first product, Ube Halaya Jam! Ube Halaya Jam is one of our favorite sweets, with so many nostalgic memories attached to it, and so many different uses. Us three have struggled, and still struggle, with digestive and inflammation issues. Dairy, gluten, and refined sugars are things we try and limit our consumption of because it doesn’t do good things for us (doesn’t mean we don’t indulge sometimes, it’s so hard not to!!). We wanted to create something that gave us that nostalgic and cultural connection, but that could still be easy on our guts. So here is our version of Ube Halaya, vegan, dairy free, gluten free, free of refined sugars, and free of any dyes. We’ve soft-launched this product, selling limited quantities with our Baon Box, in collaboration with @jessica_joan! Super grateful that I got to conduct the interview for office magazine’s digital cover. I’m even more grateful that the digital cover is of a young black creative excelling in the creative world as well as the medical field. Oluwole Olosunde is a 22 year old New York native currently fighting this on going pandemic and lended his voice to tell his story from inside the hospital through handwritten diary entries. Under the road map hairdressers were listed to reopen in Melbourne under the third step, and beauty and professional services in the last step, step 4. However these services - where workers can wear masks - will be permitted to open earlier - towards the end of October. This will mean services such as facials, lip waxing, facial tattooing (or any service where a mask has to be removed), cannot occur. WE ARE BACK It’s been 168 days since we last spoke, since the magazine paused printing just after lockdown, and I hope that ES Magazine’s return this week is an optimistic salvo, a sign that London is rebuilding in a new way and that the best bits (aka your favourite weekly) will remain. We return to your streets and homes with our biannual fashion edition, packed with new ideas on dressing for our new lives (cosier, more sustainable and locally made), interviews with fashion icons and industry start-ups. There’s a hit of Insta humour with @jtfirstman, and @raven__smith — king of an exquisite turn of phrase — writes about the power of pearls. Turn to page 44 for an essay by @afuahirsch on her personal journey through identity and fashion. Neighbourhood and localisation is a theme that traverses this issue — see Double Bubble, a tale of lockdown neighbours, friends and lovers, on page 30. The cover was created for us by @wolfgang_tillmans, the London-based Europhile artist, photographer and activist. For me his work is about togetherness and possibility and during these times I believe that our culture, our creativity and our faith in the power of our communities will endure. I collaborated with him specifically for this week’s edition because I could think of no one better to articulate the way I feel about bringing you the first ES Magazine since lockdown, and my last as editor in chief. Thank you to all of you who told me on a weekly basis that you loved my vision for ES, and to my incredible team — the body of work is yours. Had such a great time working on this collaboration with @lily_giovanellirevel , she’s truly amazing and creative.
