After being awarded a degree in engineering, this researcher in robotics went on to serve as a lab assistant and lecturer assistant. He now works and lives in France. “I feel so sorry for other researchers who are still looking for hope in this world,” he says, “and I wish their suffering would end soon.” In January 2017, the government of France established the PAUSE program to support scientists who are in conflict zones or being targeted by authoritarian leaders. I know, I know... You’re probably sick of seeing my ass plastered across your IG feed. I have a point to this post, though. It’s nearing the end of 2020. The year that accelerated every movement imaginable. Yet somehow, still, even amongst the riots, the pandemic, the influence(rs), the millions of voices raised, I STILL get asked almost on a daily basis how I am “so confident.” And, I don’t find that offensive. I don’t question why me just living my life- naked or clothed- constitutes “confidence,” but I do question why it’s so intriguing or compelling? I am NOT some wall of stability unwavering in the storm. I see my flaws, I feel my fears, and I know I have angles that accentuate my curves and angles that blow my face out and amplify my double chin. I guess, for me, I know that either version of my BODY is a version that I want to live in. And if I want to live inside me- why wouldn’t everyone else (that’s what she said.. anyone?... no?.. alright then.)?? You don’t have to run around throwing your confidence around, “faking it until you make it” or try to force yourself into some grandiose reality where you’re perfect and everyone else is a fuckup. You don’t have to overcompensate, or lie, or live on the defense ready to hashtag “bodypositveee” every time some jag off the street says he’s “just not that into you.” I think you just have to be authentic. Be vulnerable. Be willing... to lose followers, lose friends, lose lovers, gain insight, gain independence, be alone, be lonely, be reckless, fall in - and fall out of- love, ache, hurt, engage, accept, wonder, wander, see... and be seen. My body is just my body. Some days I wish some parts were smaller and some days I wish some parts were bigger. It’s not the only part of me and your body is not the only part of you. It’s just your temporary home.
